Muslim New Yorker: Trump’s Victory Shows We’ll Never Be Accepted As Part Of American Community

I covered a lot of Trump rallies as a journalist. I didn’t feel any hatred. People were more curious than anything. I was never assaulted. I felt like most people were just supporting him because he wasn’t part of the establishment. Or because they were tired of politics.

But it was confusing. Because even though I didn’t feel like they hated me, these people were supporting someone who said I should be banned from the country. Even the father of one of my best friends supports Trump. This man had me over to his house. I went to Thanksgiving with him. My friend asked him: ‘Dad, how can you support that man? Our friend Zahra is a Muslim.’ He told her: ‘Don’t worry. He won’t do everything that he says.’

Today has been difficult. These last few weeks, it was mostly speculation. There was suspicion that most Americans supported him but I could hope that it was wrong. But now that hope is gone. And I have to feel differently.

I have to feel like maybe most Americans don’t want me here. And I feel like no matter how hard I try, I’ll never be part of the community. And even if they’re friendly to me, or if they invite me to Thanksgiving, deep down they believe that America is a country that belongs to white people.

  • Countries Like Singapore Stealing US Jobs: Trump

Countries Like Singapore Stealing US Jobs: Trump

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump claims that countries such as Singapore, China, India and Mexico are stealing jobs from Americans, and vowed to stop the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).

“America has lost 70,000 factories since China entered the World Trade Organisation, another Bill and Hillary-backed disaster,” he told supporters in Florida, reported the Press Trust of India. “We are living through the greatest jobs theft in the history of the world. There’s never been a country that’s lost jobs like we do, so stupidly, so easy to solve.”

Mr Trump said Goodrich Lighting Systems laid off 255 workers and moved jobs to India, while Baxter Health Care Corporation laid off 199 workers and moved its jobs to Singapore. “It’s getting worse and worse and worse,” he said.

A Trump administration, he said, would impose a 35 per cent tax on any US company that wants to fire its workers and move to another country, and then shift its product back into the United States.

He also said he would immediately stop the “job-killing” TPP, calling it another disaster in the making.

Walid J. Abdullah: Trump-Supporting Bigots Living Among Us

How is it possible that there are people in Singapore who are rooting for Trump?

I don’t want to make excuses for Americans who support him, but at least you could attribute part of their support to 1) loyalty to the party, 2) growing socio-economic concerns and racism/misogyny/xenophobia become the manifestations of these fears, and 3) failure of the left to address their issues.

Apart from there being outright racists, misogynists and xenophobes amongst the Republican base, of course.

But why does he have support in Singapore? These people (arguably) have no direct stake in the election, and yet they support a clearly anti-Muslim, anti-Hispanic, anti-Black, male chauvinist, who cheated the system and bragged about not doing his fair bit for society, and who has zero experience in public office.

    Yet he has a following???

That, is far more scary to me than Trump getting elected. Because whether Trump wins or not, evidently, there are bigots living amongst us.

Walid J. Abdullah: Chastise, Don’t Dismiss, Donald Trump And Supporters

So many people going out of their way to chastise Donald Trump. I have no doubts some do it out of their convictions that his rhetoric is simply vile; yet, i can’t help but feel some just do it to present themselves as enlightened individuals.

Regardless, condemning his supporters as bigots, racists, narrow-minded, dumb and stupid is not going to change their vote. In fact, it will merely strengthen their conviction that Trump is indeed being targeted by the establishment and the rest of the world. An establishment that they perceive to have lost touch with the masses, and one that has not taken care of their bread and butter.

Learn from the lessons of Brexit. Displaying self-righteousness will not get us anywhere (look at those idiots supporting Trump; i’m anti-racism (selectively), i read so much, i’m clever, and they are morons). The rhetoric of hate, when heard by disenfranchised people, can really result in racist, bigoted and weird outcomes.

Address the real issues surrounding disenfranchisement, and don’t just dismiss them as ‘Trump supporters are just racists and misogynists’! (Which undeniably, some are)

But sure, if we want to take the moral ‘high ground’, in spite of our own silence toward racism in our midst, and if we wish to portray to the world how illuminated we are, continue to be condescending toward Trump supporters. Just don’t act surprised or sad if he eventually wins.

I don’t think he will, but hey, i didn’t think George W. Bush would get elected. Twice. The second time, after the illegal invasion of Iraq.
