    Mother Battling With Cancer Appeals For Donations

    My name is Chek Ming. I am 46 years old. I want to tell you my story and ask for your help. My life has been a struggle for the past few years but I am consoled as I have a 5-year old son. He is my greatest pride and joy, and also the reason I’m asking for help.

    I am a Stage 4 cancer patient (metastatic clear cell ovarian carcinoma) who desperately needs to raise over $139,000 annually to get access to immunotherapy, which is not a subsidised cancer treatment and it is out of reach for subsidised patients like me.

    I am also fast running out of time, having endured 2 years of debilitating chemotherapy, using various other cancer drugs, to no avail, having now reached fourth-line treatment stage using the last available drug. Those conventional cancer drugs have failed to stop the rapid spread of the disease from Stage 1c to Stage 4. I am now suffering from incremental and severe stabbing pains in my right chest and arm due to inflamed axillary lymph nodes surrounding the front of my heart and embedded in my chest.

    It all happened when I was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of ovarian cancer called “Ovarian Clear Cell Carcinoma”, that occurs in only 5% of ovarian cancer sufferers. As such, hardly any research has been done on this type of cancer.

    I underwent major surgery on 6th April 2015 to remove a huge 12.5 cm ovarian cyst, my womb, ovaries, Fallopian tubes, cervix, omentum, appendix and 29 lymph nodes when ultrasound scans and CA125 cancer marker blood tests indicated high possibility of ovarian cancer. The diagnosis of ovarian cancer was confirmed when the diseased ovarian cyst was sent to the lab for frozen section.

    Subsequently, I started chemotherapy on 21st May 2015, receiving Carboplatin and Paclitaxel chemotherapy for 6 cycles every 3 weeks as my medical oncologist said that it is an aggressive cancer (clear cell type) and is likely to come back despite surgery. At that time, I was told that I had Stage 1c ovarian clear cell cancer – i.e. the cancerous ovarian cyst had been leaking cancerous fluid into the surrounding tissues.

    Despite the side effects, I persevered through this chemotherapy in the hope that I can survive to raise my son. I will do anything for him. Being 3 years old at the time, he did not know much. But, he saw me lose my hair, vomit, lying in bed unwell for hours and could not play with him – he could not comprehend or understand the reasons.

    I thought it was all over and I can go back to lead a normal life. Then, the unthinkable happened. On the 21st September 2015, my medical oncologist suggested that I undergo another CT scan for a routine check-up after my chemotherapy (immediately after I finished my chemotherapy that same month).

    The doctor told me it is now impossible to either operate or cure since the cancer has resurged aggressively to Stage 4 in such a short amount of time. My heart sank. I need more treatments but any treatment now is not curative. The doctor told me any treatment now is merely palliative.

    I am a single parent and the sole-breadwinner. Oftentimes, I skip meals in order to save up enough money to feed my son proper meals, as he was born prematurely and underweight. I have met many kind people but the amount of help that I need is more than what my normal acquaintances can help.

    I live in a small, barebones, 45-sqm, HDB flat (1 bedroom, 1 hall). I have sold off everything that I can sell, in order to survive month-to-month.

    Unfortunately, I have no private health insurance and I am not covered under the CPF Dependent Protection Scheme. Hence, I am thankful to all the NUH Doctors, Nurses, Radiologists, Therapists, Counter Staff, Support Staff and Medical Social Workers for their kindness and support. As a subsidised patient, I am grateful to the Singapore Government and the National University Hospital of Singapore for MediShield Life, the NUH medical assistance fund (for Avastin) and the medical bill subsidy by Medifund, which does not cover all bills.

    I hope that your donation would be able to help me to pay for my family’s medical bills; basic necessities; household bills; journeys to/from hospital (because I am unsteady on my feet nowadays due to neuropathy and blood pressure is low); some nutritious fresh foods; bank debts left behind in my name by an abusive estranged spouse (who left the country several years ago and no contact); and daily living expenses, during these dark days, and even more so when my condition deteriorates and require hospice care; coming funeral expenses; and to set aside sufficient cash reserve for my poor mother to sustain herself and enable her to care for my young son when I pass on, as they will be in urgent need in the many years to come. Thank you in advance for all donations.

    The cost for immunotherapy treatment amounts to approximately $139,000 a year. The medicine is administered every 3 weeks.

    The medicine costs between $6,500 and $8,000 per dose, depending on the type administered. There are usually pre-medications that need to be administered too, prior to each dose of the immunotherapy medicine but I do not know the cost for these pre-medications at this point in time.

    My doctor tells me that the 5-year survival rate for this cancer is not good and I am unlikely to survive very long given that this is an aggressive, chemo-resistant cancer and it is now at Stage 4. Yet, I need to survive this fight for my life, for at least another few more years in order to stay with my son. He is just too young to lose his mom.

    I am appealing out of desperation as I have exhausted all my social connections and charity appeals. I have sold off anything that is of value in my small flat.

    Please help me. Any help, no matter how big or small, will make a big difference to me and my son.

    ASEAN Football Federation Contradicts FAS Regarding $500,000 Donation By Bill Ng

    The Asean Football Federation (AFF) has contradicted earlier statements by the Football Association of Singapore regarding a $500,000 donation by Bill Ng.

    The FAS had previously said that it was former FAS president Zainudin Nordin, who had approached Ng with a proposal to support the AFF’s Football Management System (FMS), and that Ng had decided to donate the money directly to AFF through a soccer club that he owns.

    “It is clear that the amount of $500,000 was never meant to be donated to the FAS or any Singapore footballing activity… This was not a case of FAS accepting a donation and thereafter channeling the amount to AFF instead of using it for local football.” – FAS

    FAS provided a quote which it claimed was from“an AFF spokesman” saying:“We are thankful to our donors and partners who have come onboard to support this new programme, including one of the FA Singapore NFL clubs who donated S$500,000 towards the system.”

    PETALING JAYA (17 April 2017) – As a result of various queries from the media on the subject of the FMS, the AFF would like to clarify particularly on the system.

    The Asean Football Federation (AFF) Football Management System is an initiative aimed at enhancing the capabilities of football associations and clubs which will then better position them to achieve success in key result areas including but not limited to income generation, information technology, corporate governance, and facilities utilization, among others.

    The sharing of resources among football associations in this region will strengthen ongoing efforts aimed at raising the standards of football management in Southeast Asia. We are in the last phase of preparations and we expect to launch the system within the next nine to 12 months.

    The AFF Council members were informed at the 3 Council Meeting held on 6 December 2015, that the FA Singapore had donated a sum of SGD500,000 on 4 November 2015 as a payment to develop the System. The Council recorded its thanks and appreciation to FA Singapore for their effort to make the project a reality.

    FAS Donation To AFF Raises Many Questions

    I refer to the media reports where Hougang United chairman Bill Ng claimed that he had donated about $850,000 to the FAS since 2012 but was unsure where the money went; as well as to the Football Association of Singapore’s (FAS) rebuttals to the allegations by Mr Ng. The various news reports piqued my interest and I went through the FAS’s annual reports (financial report section) for FY2015 and FY2014, covering the period from 1 April 2013 to 31 March 2015, but could not find any mention of this $500,000 donation to the Asean Football Federation (AFF) in it.

    As this sum of $500,000 is extremely huge, relative to the FAS Group’s (operating) deficit (revenue – expenses) before taxation of $5,445 and $5,453 in FY2015 and FY2014, respectively – instead of just stating that “all donations and sponsorships from our partners are recorded and accounted for”, and that they “are prepared to share the documents relating to this subject with the relevant parties.”  – can the FAS help to clarify where this donation is reflected in their annual report, and make public the documents recording its receipt and subsequent payment and receipt to the AFF.

    This may be a matter of some urgency, given that the elections will be held on 29 April.

    I also refer to FAS general secretary Winston Lee’s comments as reported in the media that Ng “had full knowledge of what the donation was for, and that none of it came to the FAS.” Mr Lee further said that Mr Ng “knew that the money was not being donated to FAS or any Singapore footballing activity, and to claim it was given to FAS is not factual.”

    But the question really is, did the FAS inform the donor in writing that the money was in fact for the AFF?

    Also, since the FAS is an Institution of Public Character (IPC) which means that donations are tax deductible, did the donor get a tax deduction, with full knowledge (according to FAS) that the money was not for local football, but for the AFF? Also, why were the donation(s) channeled “through FAS” to the AFF? Was the $500,000 donation (cheque) paid to the FAS?

    In this regard, questions by the soccer fraternity and fans about “where the funds of a hugely profitable amateur club were channelled to, and why they did not make moves to invest in local football or join the professional S.League”, is well justified.

    Mr Ng further said in his statement to the press that he believes “that none of the council (members) knew anything about this (donation).” But at the time of writing this article (10 am, 15 April), I do not seem to be able to find any response to this assertion in the various FAS statements.

    FAS subsequently issued a second statement which included a quoted from the AFF on the football management system, where the the AFF spokesman said the football management system will enhance the “capabilities of football associations and clubs, which will then better position them to achieve success in key result areas including but not limited to income generation, information technology, corporate governance, and facilities utilisation, among others.”

    The AFF spokesman in thanking the Singapore NFL club for the $500,000 donation, further said that the system will be launched “within the next nine to 12 months”. But, is taking more than three years or four years to develop a “football management system” arguably, kind of long?

    And also, should not the AFF thank the FAS and not the Singapore NFL for the donation since the donation went to AFF via FAS? Was the donation paid to the AFF by the FAS or directly to the AFF by Tiong Bahru FC?

    Ingin Bantu Pelarian Syria Harungi Musim Sejuk? Semua 70 Masjid S’pura Kumpul Dana Khas Mulai Jumaat Ini

    Kita di Singapura, Malaysia dan Indonesia sedang mengalami cuaca dingin yang nyaman. Namun para pelarian Syria kini dibelenggu oleh cuaca amat sejuk, yang menggigit rantau Timur Tengah.

    Bermakna, para pelarian Syria kini memerlukan lebih banyak bantuan dan kelengkapan bagi melindungi diri mereka, selain keperluan lain seperti makanan.

    Lantaran itu, mulai Jumaat ini (3 Feb), semua 70 masjid di Singapura, dengan kerjasama Yayasan Rahmatan Lil Alamin (RLAF), akan mengadakan kutipan derma khas sempena musim sejuk, bagi membantu para pelarian Syria.

    KERJASAMA RLAF, UNHCR & MAHASISWA S’PURA DI JORDAN

    Konflik dalam negeri dan peperangan di Syria yang sudah berlarutan hampir enam tahun amat menjejas para penduduknya.

    Lebih empat juta rakyat Syria sudahpun melarikan diri dari negara itu dan mendapatkan perlindungan di negara-negara asing seperti Eropah, Turki, Jordan, Lubnan, Iraq dan Mesir.

    Di Jordan sahaja, terdapat 650,000 pelarian dan jumlah yang tinggi itu menjejas ke atas sumber-sumber di negara yang juga sedang berusaha memenuhi keperluan rakyatnya sendiri.

    Oleh itu, RLAF akan bekerjasama dengan UNHCR dan badan mahasiswa Singapura di Jordan untuk menghulurkan bantuan dalam program bantuan musim sejuk serta program-program pendidikan bagi kanak-kanak Syria.

    KEMPEN KUTIP DANA BERLANGSUNG SELAMA SEMINGGU

    Kotak-kotak derma RLAF akan diletakkan di semua 70 masjid dari Jumaat ini sehingga Khamis 9 Februari 2017 dan akan tertera tulisan “Special Winter Collection in Aid of Syrian Refugees”.

    Orang ramai boleh menghulurkan derma mereka secara tunai ataupun menerusi cek. Semua derma menerusi cek perlu diberikan kepada “RLAF” dan ditulis “Special Winter Collection in Aid of Syrian Refugees” pada bahagian belakangnya.

    Sumbangan wang tunai dan cek boleh dihantar ke Bangunan MUIS di Hab Islam Singapura, No 273, Braddell Road, Singapore 579702.

    Selain itu, orang awam juga boleh menyumbang secara online menerusi https://zakat.sg/ePayment/donations.aspx.

    RLAF PERNAH BANTU 4,000 KELUARGA SYRIA

    Pada tahun 2014, RLAF dan masjid-masjid di Singapura berjaya mengumpulkan lebih $400,000 menerusi dua usaha mengumpul dana bagi para pelarian Syria.

    Dana itu digunakan untuk mengagihkan makanan yang sudah dimasak, keperluan bagi lebih 4,000 keluarga Syria, peralatan sekolah bagi kanak-kanak pelarian Syria di tiga buah sekolah di Turki serta kit ubat-ubatan bagi klinik-klinik untuk merawat mereka yang cedera dan kurang upaya.

    Yang paling penting, RLAF dengan kerjasama Projek ASRIT (Bantuan untuk Pelarian Syria di Turki) berjaya menubuhkan Pusat Pendidikan Temasek di Kilis, selatan Turki yang mengambil 500 pelajar Syria dari peringkat tadika sehingga pos-menengah setiap tahun. Sehingga kini, pusat ini masih lagi beroperasi.

    Bagi peminat pelawak negara, Johan dan isterinya, Ozlynn Watie dan sering ‘menjenguk’ Instagram pasangan ini, pasti sudah mengetahui rumah mereka selalu dikunjungi teman artis yang datang untuk menjamu selera.

    Ekoran sikap pasangan itu yang bermurah hati mendapat reaksi dan komen positif daripada peminat yang sentiasa mendoakan agar keluarga mereka sentiasa dilimpahkan rezeki dek kerana sikap yang suka menjamu rakan artis lain.

    Jadi, tidak mustahillah Johan atau nama sebenarnya Mohd Yazid Lim Mohamad Aziz, 32, berhasrat menyumbang sebahagian wang kemenangan dalam program Super Spontan Superstar 2016 kepada mangsa perang Syria.

    Penderitaan dihadapi pelarian dari negara bergolak berkenaan, khususnya kanak-kanak, amat menyentuh hatinya membuatkan beliau menyalurkan sebahagian daripada wang kemenangan RM100,000 (S$31,900) program itu, Oktober lalu, kepada mereka.

    “Saya percaya pemberian yang ikhlas juga akan membuatkan rezeki seseorang bertambah.”

    “Buat masa ini, wang kemenangan berkenaan belum lagi saya terima, tetapi itulah niat saya jika ia diperoleh dalam masa terdekat,” katanya.

    Tambahnya,  beliau akan menggunakan saluran betul supaya sumbangan dihulurkan benar-benar sampai ke tangan pihak memerlukan.

    Selain itu, penyampai Era FM ini juga memasang impian untuk membina masjid di kawasan yang memerlukan.

    “Sejak dulu lagi saya membayangkan, alangkah bahagianya jika saya memiliki duit yang banyak kerana niat saya adalah untuk mencari keberkatan hidup.

    “Begitupun, hanya orang yang kaya mampu membina sebuah masjid. Namun, saya tidak bermaksud orang miskin tak boleh beramal sama kerana walaupun sedikit sumbangan kita, ia tetap diterima Allah,” katanya.
