  • This Is The Australian Housewife Who Saved Lives Of 3 Boys At East Coast Park

This Is The Australian Housewife Who Saved Lives Of 3 Boys At East Coast Park

Plunging into the waters off East Coast Park not once, not twice, but thrice, housewife Silvia Hajas managed to pull three schoolboys to shore before it was too late.

But the triathlete did not manage to reach one of the boys, who was struggling in the waters around Bedok Jetty and later disappeared at around noon yesterday.

Ms Hajas, 47, told The Straits Times yesterday that she arrived at the stretch of beach at East Coast Park’s Area E at noon with her eight-year-old daughter.

She snapped a panoramic picture of the sea view from the breakwater that showed seven boys, including Suhaimi, swimming about 50m away from the shoreline.

At first, Ms Hajas thought the boys were simply playing as they were making noises. But when she heard more than one of them cry out for help, she leapt into the water.

Three of the boys swam back on their own, while the others looked like they were having trouble staying afloat, said Ms Hajas, an Australian national who has lived here for six years on a dependant’s pass.

“I swam out to the closest boy and helped him to get out. And then I turned around and went out again to pull in another,” she recalled, adding that she could not touch the ground where the boys were at. She is 1.7m tall. “I was very tired at this stage – the sea was very choppy and the waves were strong.”

A couple arrived at the scene and found a rescue float nearby. The man, who was able to swim, dived into the water with Ms Hajas while his female partner called the police.

Said Ms Hajas: “By that time, the fourth boy was no longer above water. We swam and put the life buoy on one boy and pulled him out.”

The police confirmed receiving a call about a missing person in the waters off Bedok Jetty at 12.24pm, roughly 10 minutes after Ms Hajas snapped her picture. By then, Ms Hajas had returned to shore with the third boy.

“We kept looking in the horizon and looking out for the fourth boy, but he never came back up and we never saw him again,” she said.

Her daughter was being looked after by the three boys who had swum back to shore on their own.

Ms Hajas, who has taken part in triathlons, said the boys who got into trouble did not seem to know any swimming techniques and did not seem to be using their arms to tread water.

“They were just starting to play in the water when I first saw them and, five minutes later, they were much farther out, so I think the current pulled them out much farther than they expected,” she said. “It took them completely by surprise.”

Ketua Polis Daerah Batu Pahat ACP Abdul Wahib Musa berkata kejadian itu berlaku ketika keluarga berkenaan sedang bermandi-manda selepas kira-kira 20 minit mengunjungi taman tema itu pada 3.30 petang.

“S. Rishither, 6 tahun, ditemui lemas oleh bapanya S. Surentharan di sebuah kolam renang yang mempunyai kedalaman lima kaki, tidak jauh dari tempat keluarganya bermandi-manda pada 3.50 petang,” katanya dalam satu kenyataan hari ini (1 Nov).

  • Singaporean Who Died On Kayaking Trip In Perak Was ‘Very Good Swimmer’

Singaporean Who Died On Kayaking Trip In Perak Was ‘Very Good Swimmer’

He was a lifesaver, a kayaking trainer and a lover of water sports.

But that only made the circumstances of Mr Koh Kah Wei’s death a bigger blow for Mr Moe Aripe, his mentor of 15 years.

On Saturday, Mr Koh, 30, died doing what he loved.

He drowned while kayaking in white water with six friends in the Sungai Tesong in Perak.

His body was found yesterday after a day’s search.

Mr Moe, 56, told The New Paper: “He was well-equipped to deal with all kinds of water situations. To die due to drowning is very shocking. I’m still in a state of disbelief.”

Adding that they had met up about two weeks ago, Mr Moe, who runs Angel Lifesaver School, said: “He must have been unconscious.”

The Bidor Fire and Rescue Department in Perak received a distress call about the incident on Saturday at about 4.50pm.

Department chief Nadzir Razak told Bernama: “His kayak hit driftwood and overturned, throwing him into the water. His friends tried to help but failed as the current was swift.”

A 30-man search and rescue operation was conducted on the same day, but was hampered by bad weather.

Tapah Fire and Rescue Department’s Assistant Superintendent Kamarulzaman Busirun said the search resumed at about 7am yesterday with a 67-man team.

He told TNP: “It was a relay rescue operation with one group taking over from another. We wanted to make sure the search was continuous.”

At 3.15pm, Mr Koh’s body was found near a rock about 1km from the site of the accident.

His shirt was stuck between rocks.

    FAMILY GRIEF

Mr Kamarulzaman said: “The victim’s family who were present were crying. We tried to calm them down, and tell them nobody would wish for this to happen.”

He added that the body has been sent to Tapah Hospital for a post-mortem.

Last night, Mr Koh’s sister, Yu Xiang, posted details of his wake at Block 301D, Anchorvale Drive on his Facebook account.

In Singapore, the lifesaving fraternity is coming to terms with news of Mr Koh’s death.

Said Mr Moe: “I have been receiving calls from other instructors and lifesaving teacher colleagues asking me about it. It’s been a hard time for me trying to explain to everyone what has happened.”

The loss is more painful for him as he had come to see Mr Koh like his son, after mentoring him for 15 years.

He said: “Kah Wei was a very good swimmer. I pushed him hard.

“He was among a group I handpicked and trained to become swimming instructors and lifesaving coaches because they are good.

“I became not just a coach or mentor but a fatherly figure to them. I would be fierce or harsh whenever any one of them did something out of line.”

Mr Koh was qualified to conduct lifesaving examinations.

He was also a lecturer at the National Community Leadership Institute, the community leadership development arm of the People’s Association (PA).

He was also an instructor at PA-Water Venture, which offers water and adventure sports activities.

Said Mr Moe: “He achieved what he wanted. I was really very proud of him. Suddenly, all that is taken away.”

He was well-equipped to deal with all kinds of water situations. To die due to drowning is very shocking. I’m still in a state of disbelief.
