Huge Escalator Part Pierced Toddler’s Sandals But AMK Hub Still Allow Escalator To Run

Stomper M‘s five-year-old grandson had a harrowing experience while on an escalator at AMK Hub last Thursday (Dec 15), slightly after 1pm.

A metal piece from the escalator that was going down to Basement 2 and towards NTUC FairPrice Xtra pierced through the toddler’s sandals.

M is upset at how staff at AMK Hub’s Customer Service handled the situation. She also raised concerns about how she saw the escalator still in operation, hours after the unfortunate incident.

M told Stomp in a phone interview:

“Last Thursday afternoon, we were going down the escalator to B2, going to NTUC.

“My grandson and his mummy were standing behind me. Halfway through, we heard something like the sound of chains dropping.

“I turned back my head, I saw my daughter carry his son and the next moment, we saw that his left shoe had something poking into his shoe.

“When we reached the end, we saw that one part of the escalator step had broken into a mysterious way. Everyone who saw that were totally stunned”

According to M, passers-by who saw what happened were in shock as well and some took photos. She continued:

“Thank God his left foot was okay. We were so shocked till we didn’t know what to do and many people came crowding around.

“No security guards were around, so I went up to the info counter for help. The escalator only stopped after I brought a kind security guard there. I put my grandson into an NTUC trolley and we all went to the info counter again.

“After minutes, the head of security came and his care was good.

“Some people in charge of AMK Hub came. I have no idea who they are, but we wasted more than an hour to two hours.

  • Man Hurt After Foot Was Caught In Escalator At Bugis Junction

Man Hurt After Foot Was Caught In Escalator At Bugis Junction

A man in his 20s was taken to hospital after his foot was caught in an escalator at Bugis Junction.

The accident happened at about 9.15pm on Wednesday (Nov 16) at an escalator leading from the basement to the first story of the shopping mall.

He was stuck for about half an hour, witnesses said.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) had to be activated to release the man’s foot from the escalator using hydraulic rescue tools.

He was taken to Singapore General Hospital, SCDF said.

The man, who is 27, was treated for a toe injury at the hospital,  said Ms Ivy Ang, general manager of Bugis Junction.

“Our staff have visited the shopper and we will continue to be in touch to provide him with the necessary support,” Ms Ang said.

Passers-by took videos and photos of the accident.

Mr Tim Maohuan, 33, was shopping with his wife at level two of the mall when he noticed a queue building up at the escalator.

He saw three young men holding the man whose foot was trapped. The man looked calm but worried, he said.

“One of the teenagers asked him to remove his jacket and later his tie, to make him feel more comfortable,” Mr Tim, a flight attendant, told The Straits Times.

Two security guards came over and they tried with the young men to pull the man’s foot out but failed, he said.

Mr Tim then called the SCDF, who responded within 10 minutes, he said.

“Nobody expected this to happen, it showed that anybody can be exposed to this risk,” he said.

His video, shared on Stomp, showed SCDF personnel surrounding the man, who was in a white shirt.

He was sitting in an awkward position while a young man appeared to be supporting him as he went through the ordeal.

When he was successfully rescued, the crowd at the mall applauded.

SCDF added that it sent one fire engine, a Red Rhino, one ambulance, and one support vehicle to the scene.

Ms Ang said that the mall is now checking that its escalators are ” functioning well and meet safety requirements”.

“The safety of our shoppers is of paramount importance to us.  We are currently investigating the cause of the incident and will take the necessary actions to prevent a recurrence,” she said.

  • Another Escalator Incident In PRC Leaves Parents On Edge

Another Escalator Incident In PRC Leaves Parents On Edge

Shortly after the fatal accident which saw a young mother being “swallowed” up by a revolving escalator in a PRC mall, another report of a chilling incident involving escalators in Guangxi Province has emerged.

According to local media reports, a 1 year-old toddler had gotten his left arm trapped in the grooves of an escalator at a mall. He was riding the escalator with his mother when the incident took place on Monday at about 10AM.

A distress call was sent out and local rescue workers were dispatched to the scene. They found the boy crying in excruciating pain and his mother in shock and a state of panic.

Rescue workers used hydraulic equipment to pry open the escalator steps and freed the boy within 5 minutes. However, according to eye witnesses, the boy’s left arm was “basically destroyed”.

Local PRC authorities are investigating the case.
