CNB Seizes 5 Kg Of Cannabis And Samurai Sword In Raid

A crackdown on a suspected local drug dealer on Monday yielded a drug haul containing about 5kg of cannabis, as well as other drugs and weapons.

On Monday afternoon, Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) officers went to the area around Geylang Lorong 37 to keep watch on a 34-year-old Singaporean man, the alleged drug trafficker. They suspected he would be receiving a fresh batch of cannabis.

At about 4.20pm, a 45-year-old man, a suspected drug runner, was seen getting out of a van and placing a brown cardboard box beside a dustbin along Geylang Lorong 37, before leaving.

Within a few moments, the suspected dealer arrived in a car and drove off with the box.

His car was intercepted by CNB officers along Geylang Road and he was arrested on the spot.

The box was found to contain five blocks of cannabis, weighing approximately 5kg in total.

Also found in his car were other drugs including 164g of ‘Ice’, 137 ‘Ecstasy’ tablets, 101 Erimin-5 tablets, a digital weighing scale, drug paraphernalia and S$26,000 in cash. In addition, two samurai swords and a machete were also recovered in the suspect’s car.

Officers also caught the suspected drug runner at a petrol kiosk around Ipoh Lane. A small packet of ‘Ice’ weighing approximately 1g was found in his van.

The two men will be investigated for drug trafficking.

Cannabis is a Class A controlled drug and those found to be trafficking more than 500g of it could face the death sentence.

  • URA Proposes Rezoning Parts Of Geylang For Better Management Of Areas

URA Proposes Rezoning Parts Of Geylang For Better Management Of Areas

The Urban Redevelopment Authority on Tuesday (Jan 13) announced it is proposing to rezone parts of Geylang, so as to better manage the area in question and “prevent spillover of disamenities to surrounding areas”.

URA said the proposed area is bounded by Geylang Road, Lorong 22 Geylang, Guillemard Road and Lorong 4 Geylang, excluding the parcels of land zoned Road, the lots fronting Geylang Road and the sports field bounded by Talma Road and Lorong 12 Geylang. It plans to rezone this area from Residential/Institution to Commercial/Institution, according to its press release.

Explaining the decision, URA Group Director for Physical Planning Hwang Yu-Ning said in the proposal that Geylang is a “rich and colourful neighbourhood” interspersed with associations, clans, places of worship, shops, offices and residential uses. It is also a traditional red-light area, she noted.

“The various entertainment and eating outlets in the area give rise to activities of a certain colour and vibrancy,” Ms Hwang said. “With more new residential developments in the area, there has been an increasing spillover of disamenities and friction on the ground.

“In our assessment, the growth of new residential community in the area of Lorongs 4-22 Geylang needs to be re-balanced and moderated.”

If the rezoning gets the go-ahead, residential units will no longer be approved in this area. She added the new residential developments in the area, which have been approved will not be affected and can proceed to be built.

A Geylang resident Channel NewsAsia spoke to welcomed the rezoning proposal.

“All these are red light areas. And if they could take this away and put it into more commercial use, like running a legal business that would be fine. It’s good to have commercial properties around your estate so that it’s convenient for everybody to go shopping or to do things or have an office near your home,” he said.

The area’s Member of Parliament (MP) said it is useful not to have more residential developments in the area.

Said Mr Edwin Tong, MP, Moulmein-Kallang GRC: “There are not many residential units there anyway. And much of the area that is being rezoned is already largely commercial, with a good mix of clans and associations. I think it is also useful to not have further residential developments there in an area where traditionally there are not just commercial properties there but also more nightclubs and bars which probably don’t co-exist suitably with residential units. ”

The URA said members of public can submit their feedback, objection or representation to the proposal in writing to the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of National Development, 5 Maxwell Road, Singapore 069110, by Feb 11, 2015.

More information on this proposal can be found on the URA website.

    Dear R1C,

I would like to share something wonderful that I found over the weekend. I saw one of my friend shared a photo of a local Muslim butcher stall owner who pasted hijab movement sticker on the stall. The stall is located at Blk 4A Eunos  Crescent Market & Food Centre S402004. I want to express how happy I am to see this. I believe more people should paste all these stickers at their work place, their food stalls, their home and even their car. As Muslims, it is our duty to spread this awareness.

As a proud Muslim, I am happy to find a growing number of Muslims who are supporting the hijab movement. Hijab is a command of Allah and every command of Allah is full of wisdom.

Wearing a hijab for me feels great. It definitely makes you feel different somehow as if your spirit is being up lifted. For myself I wear a hijab with guidance but also as I feel comfortable. I don’t try to push myself too hard but still stay within boundaries of what Allah would want.

I started by wearing the hijab and practicing how to wear it when going out with friends and incorporated a new wardrobe along the way as hijab is not just covering the head. I made people around me aware of my interest in Islam and that I was serious about becoming Muslim and in doing so following “it” and respecting Islam as much as I can and that means representing the faith and we should as well as Muslims following their book of guidance and Muhammad who was a great teacher.

Allah wants us to be protected from harm and get maximum benefit so keep in that in mind. It is all about believing in yourself and that you can do it. Take the hijab as a stepping stone to a new direction. Once you wear it you will understand that it is not difficult. You have to have the courage to wear it as it will protect your beauty.

Hijab is dignified, not dishonoured, noble, not degraded, liberated, not subjugated, purified, not sullied, independent, not a slave, protected, not exposed, respected, not laughed at, confident, not insecure, obedient, not a sinner, a guarded pearl, not a prostitute…
