  • Saudi Arabia Approves Increase In Singapore’s Haj Quota To 800 Pilgrims

Saudi Arabia Approves Increase In Singapore’s Haj Quota To 800 Pilgrims

More than four years after Singapore appealed for an increase in its official Haj quota, Saudi Arabia has agreed to the request, raising the number of places from 680 to 800.

The news, which will be welcomed by the Muslim community here, was announced by Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs Dr Yaacob Ibrahim on Friday (Feb 17).

He noted that Singapore had appealed for an increase from 680 since 2012, in light of the reduction in quota for domestic and foreign pilgrims, due to the major development and upgrading projects taking place in the vicinity of the Holy Mosque in Mecca.

Thanking Saudi Arabia for the increase in the Haj quota, Dr Yaacob said the Saudi authorities would also consider Singapore’s requests for additional Haj visas for this year.

Dr Yaacob, who is also Minister for Communications and Information, was speaking on the sidelines of a visit to Al-Khair Mosque at Teck Whye Crescent.

Upgrading works at the mosque are due to be completed by the second quarter of this year, and will result in an increase of 500 new prayer spaces, he said.

Singapore’s current Haj quota is based on a 1987 formula by the Organisation of Islamic Conference, which set it at 0.1 per cent of the Muslim population here.

Since then, the Muslim community here has grown by about 20 per cent, but the quota for the Haj, the fifth pillar of Islam, has remained unchanged. Currently, there are about 800,000 Muslims in Singapore.

The Islamic Religious Council of Singapore will contact eligible Haj registrants regarding the additional vacancies available.

Hari Raya Haji will be celebrated on Sept 1 in Singapore this year, and pilgrims tend to leave for the Haj about a month before in order to perform the necessary rituals in Mecca.

  • Muslims Around The World Celebrate Eid Al-Adha

Muslims Around The World Celebrate Eid Al-Adha

Muslims around the world celebrated the Eid al-Adha holiday on Monday (Sep 12), one of the two most important festivals of the Islamic calendar.

Marking the willingness of Ibrahim, or Abraham, to sacrifice his son on God’s command, Muslims mark the holiday by slaughtering animals such as sheep and goats. The meat is shared among family and friends and also donated to the poor.

At Jamarat in Saudi Arabia, nearly two million Muslim pilgrims performed a symbolic stoning of the devil, the riskiest part of the annual haj pilgrimage, a year after the ritual’s worst disaster in decades.

Saudi authorities said that some 1.86 million Muslims from around the world are performing the pilgrimage at Islam’s holiest city, one of the main pillars of Islam which every able-bodied Muslim is required to undertake at least once.

That is less than previous years, when up to 3 million pilgrims have attended.

To ensure a safe pilgrimage, Saudi Arabia deployed thousands of security forces, civil defence staff and volunteers as well as modern technology including drones and electronic bracelets.

Across continents, the faithful marked the festival which comes as the annual Haj pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia draws to a close.

Palestinians flocked to Jerusalem’s al-Aqsa mosque for prayers.

In Iraq, authorities adopted tough security measures during the festival, searching worshippers as they entered Abdul-Qadir al-Gilani mosque in Baghdad.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad prayed at a mosque in the Damascus suburb of Daraya, which was evacuated by rebels and surrendered to government control last month, state media reported.

In Asia, tens of thousands of people left Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka on crowded trains and ferries for their hometowns to celebrate the holiday with family and friends, while in the Indonesian capital Jakarta, Muslims attended morning prayers.

The festival was also celebrated across Africa, with the faithful in countries such as Somalia and Kenya attending mass prayers.

In Russia, thousands of Muslims gathered for prayers in Moscow while in Britain, Prime Minister Theresa May released a video message to the country’s Muslim community.

“I am proud of the contribution British Muslims make to this country and proud that Britain is home to people from vibrant and diverse backgrounds,” she said.

  • Australian Animal Rights Probe into Mistreatment of Sheep Flown Over For Korban in Singapore

Australian Animal Rights Probe into Mistreatment of Sheep Flown Over For Korban in Singapore

2,200 sheep were packed into wooden crates and stacked into the cargo hold of an aeroplane.

They were destined to face fully conscious slaughter in Singapore — but their suffering began much sooner.

Temperatures became so unbearable on a flight last week, that 174 sheep were found dead upon arrival (www.bit.ly/1xUdeAI).

In their wooden crates, there was simply nowhere these animals could go — nothing they could do — to cool their bodies down. It would have been a horrible way to die.

This is the fourth major incident of animals dying on planes in only the last year.

Both sheep and cattle have endured flights from hell — with ‘deficient’ or ‘inadequate’ ventilation blamed for the horrific suffering of animals who have suffocated to death, or died from heat stress.

Their deaths — like so many others — are just written off as a ‘cost of doing business’ to an industry that knowingly puts animals at great risk, for the sake of profit.

As you read this, our team of investigators are en route back to Australia — bringing with them the stories of the other animals who have suffered terribly at the hands of this industry.

Their evidence will form the basis of significant legal complaints to ensure those responsible for their suffering will be held to account.
