    Makcik Homeless After Fire Gutted Home, Kind Neighbour Took Her In

    A kind resident took in her neighbour after a fire in the latter’s flat, allowing the family of three to lodge in her home temporarily.

    The fire had broken out in the second-storey flat at Block 372, Jurong East Street 32 on Friday morning (Aug 4).

    Stomp earlier reported on the incident in which seven people were conveyed to hospitals for treatment after inhaling smoke.

    A 62-year-old woman and her two daughters were the occupants of the affected flat.

    After the incident, one of her daughters revealed that she had been using a hair curler, and had placed it on a mattress, after turning off the electricity.

    Later on, there was smoke and the smell of something burning, before the mattress finally caught fire.

    Said the 62-year-old mother: “I was at the market that morning when I received a call from my daughter telling me that there was a strong burning smell.

    “I immediately rushed home, and my daughters wanted to move the mattress out of the unit. However, it suddenly caught fire.”

    The fire spread fast and a neighbour, living in the unit beside theirs, was trapped in her home.

    The 58-year-old neighbour recalled: “I was on medical leave that day. I smelt something burning in the morning, but I was groggy from my fever.

    “Later I heard my husband shouting that something was burning. We opened our door and found a fire in the corridor.

    “There was nowhere we could run to. We were trapped. I started crying and screaming for help. Then I recalled that my neighbour could not move well, and I called her.”

    She said that fortunately, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) arrived in time, and the couple climbed down to safety using a ladder.

    According to her, this was not the first time a fire had broken out in the block.

    She told Shin Min Daily News: “Two years ago, a unit on the left had caught fire at around 3a, in the morning, so this is the second time already.”

    Although the affected flat’s owner has since received keys to a rental flat, her neighbour still insisted that the family stay with her for the time being.

    The neighbour added: “We’re neighbours, so it’s only right that we help each other out.”

    With their millions, chances are, they would be living in landed free-hold properties in choice areas. Their properties are for keeps which they can pass on to their succeeding generations.

    They therefore don’t have the anxieties that we ordinary mortals have.

    That is the difference.

    Unlike your COE for motor vehicles the HDB and most other private properties’ COE is for 99 years.

    Singaporean Couple Starved Filipina Maid For 15 Months, Gets 3-Months Jail Sentence

    A Singaporean couple – Lim Choon Hong and his wife Chong Sui Foon – were jailed on Monday (27 March) for starving their Filipina domestic worker over a period of 15 months between 2013 and 2014.

    Lim, a trader, was jailed three weeks and fined S$10,000, while Chong was jailed for three months. The couple have four children.

    The couple’s maid Thelma Oyasan Gawidan, who is in her 40s, was given only white bread and instant noodles to eat twice a day during the period. By the time she ran away in April 2014 and sought help from migrant advocacy group HOME, Gawidan had lost almost 20kg and weighed just 29kg.

    According to media reports, the prosecution will appeal against the sentences, having asked for a year’s jail for each of them. For their offences, the couple could have been jailed up to one year each and/or fined $10,000 each.

    The couple, who are both 47 and have four children, were found guilty in March 2016 of failing to provide Gawidan with enough food while she was employed by them.

    The couple also paid Gawidan $20,000 as part of a settlement agreement, which precludes Gawidan from suing them in civil proceedings.

    Chong had claimed that her actions were due to her mental illness as she had been diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder as an adult.

    Abused Maids Should Use MOM’s System To Report Abusive Employers

    The Ministry of Manpower has a “feedback” system which allows an employer to recommend that a worker not be employed here if s/he is undesirable or “bad”. I have always been opposed to this because MOM’s decision to accept such feedback is based on the employer’s story only without any proper investigation.

    I don’t think such a feedback system should exist, whether it is a complaint by an employer or a worker. Claims and complaints need to be investigated properly. But now I have decided to turn the tables and write negative feedback about abusive employers to MOM.

    What triggered this? This afternoon, despite acknowledgement by MOM that an employer (who is an SMU professor with a Phd from MIT) had pressured a domestic worker to kneel on the floor to say sorry for mistakes made, and had to write 500 times “I will follow what grandma tells me to” as punishment, she was still unfairly terminated by the employer and had to return home.

    Another domestic worker was threatened and had a knife pointed in her direction by the employer. Despite filing a complaint at MOM, she was told she had “no case” and had to return home.

    Why should migrant workers have to suffer in silence when such injustice happens? Why should you have to lose your job when your employer points a knife at you, humiliates and tortures you mentally? We need to take action.

    If abusive employers can submit negative feedback about you for no good reason and MOM blacklists you without thorough investigations, it is time to fight back. I don’t like this feedback system. But it looks like we have no choice because too many migrant workers have been unfairly punished by it.

    Singapore Malays International Pageant chose H.O.M.E (Humanitarian Organisation for Migration Economics) a non profit organisation as their beneficiary for their finalist charity community service day. HOME SHELTER currently assist 100 migrant workers who are genuinely abused and exploited by their employers, unpaid salaries, excessive working hours, work injuries, physical, sexual, verbal and psychological abuse are the problems these workers face. A significant number of women are domestic helpers and some of these workers are also victims of human trafficking.

    The finalists garnered a Total Value Worth $5,928.40 For Food Ration, Head Gears, Detergents & Electrical Appliances Such As Ovens, Kettles & Air Pots Were Contributed To H.O.M.E (Humanitarian Organisation for Migrants Economics) On Miss & Mrs Singapore Malays International 2016 Finalists Charity Community Service Day On 13 March 2016.
