Not Welcomed, U.N. Investigator To Assess Human Rights Across Myanmar Barred Before Visit

GENEVA (Reuters) – The U.N. independent investigator into human rights in Myanmar called on Wednesday for stronger international pressure to be exerted on Myanmar’s military commanders after being barred from visiting the country for the rest of her tenure.

Yanghee Lee, U.N. special rapporteur, had been due to visit in January to assess human rights across Myanmar, including alleged abuses against Rohingya Muslims in Rakhine State.

But Myanmar had told her she was no longer welcome, she said, adding in a statement that this suggested something “terribly awful” was happening in the country.

“From what I see right now I’m not sure if they are feeling pressured. I’m not sure if there is the right kind of pressure placed on the military commanders and the generals,” she later told Reuters by phone from Seoul.

She said it was alarming that Myanmar was strongly supported by China, which has a veto at the U.N.’s top table in New York. Other countries including the United States and human groups were advocating targeted sanctions on the military, she said.

“It has to work. And I’m sure the world has to find a way to make it work. And I think the United Nations and its member states should really try to persuade China to really act towards the protection of human rights,” she said.

More than 650,000 Rohingya have fled into Bangladesh since Aug. 25, when attacks by Muslim insurgents on the Myanmar security forces triggered a response by the army and Buddhist vigilantes.

Surveys of Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh by aid agency Medecins Sans Frontieres have shown at least 6,700 Rohingya were killed in Rakhine state in the month after violence flared up on Aug 25, MSF said last week.

The U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra‘ad al-Hussein has called the violence “a textbook example of ethnic cleansing” and said he would not be surprised if a court eventually ruled that genocide had taken place.

Lee had planned to use her visit to find out procedures for the return of Rohingya refugees, and to investigate increased fighting in the Kachin and northern Shan areas of Myanmar.

Lee, in an earlier statement, said Myanmar’s refusal to cooperate with her was a strong indication that there must be “something terribly awful happening” throughout the country, although the government had repeatedly denied any violations of human rights.

“They have said that they have nothing to hide, but their lack of cooperation with my mandate and the fact-finding mission suggests otherwise,” she said.

She was “puzzled and disappointed”, since Myanmar’s Ambassador in Geneva Htin Lynn had told the U.N. Human Rights Council only two weeks ago that it would continue to cooperate.

“Now I am being told that this decision to no longer cooperate with me is based on the statement I made after I visited the country in July,” she said.

Lynn did not respond to a request for comment. Neither Zaw Htay, spokesman for Myanmar’s de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi, nor Kyaw Moe Tun, a spokesman for the ministry of foreign affairs that Suu Kyi heads, were immediately available.

  • So Is Farid Khan Supportive Or Against The Unjust Persecution Of Rohingyas?

So Is Farid Khan Supportive Or Against The Unjust Persecution Of Rohingyas?

Yesterday Farid Khan’s personal FB account shared a post containing a link to a petition which expressed support for the prosecution of Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi in the European Court of Human Rights over the Rohingya refugee crisis. When public found out about the post, he deleted the FB account to prevent a ‘similar incident’ from happening in the future and issued a statement.

    In the statement, it wrote:

“It has been brought to my attention regarding a report by ASS, alleging that I am throwing my “weight behind a petition calling on the European Court of Human Rights to try Myanmar leader ASSK for human rights violations” in Myanmar. The report is completely untrue.”

So this Muslim presidential candidate retracted his post on petition for Rohingyas after it was known to public. But why did he retract his support or lack of?

A netizen posed him this question:

“Mr Khan, so do you support our Muslim brothers and sisters who have been unjustly persecuted and murdered by the Myanmarese government, and whos nobel laureate aung san suu kyi did not do anything to stop these human rights violations?”

Maybe Singaporeans especially Muslims in Singapore would like to know his answer to the question. To be fair, does any of the 3 Muslim presidential candidates care for our Rohingya brothers and sisters?

  • M Ravi: Support Me As I Keep The Anti-Death Penalty Pressure On The Singapore Government

M Ravi: Support Me As I Keep The Anti-Death Penalty Pressure On The Singapore Government

PLEASE SHARE THIS POST AS WIDELY AS YOU CAN. This is the first time I have made such a request .

Here is my speech ( rather an emotional cry for justice for Ridzuan and others )delivered on Saturday made in memory of Ridzuan. I can’t help but to feel angry….outrage ….those who say to me stay calm… I ask – would you stay calm if your brother was murdered unjustly In front of you just a week ago !The wounds of this cold blooded murderous evil act ( “evil ” is the word used by my esteemed colleague Eugene Thuraisingam in his Facebook postings ) is still afresh and raw. If you don’t share the outrage , don’t tell me I should not feel this way or that way .. to me that only shows you are heartless, operating on cold logic!

Friday morning executions are like bunch of thugs who had given you a warning that they will kill your child ( if you have one ) in front of you and they give you the exact time of execution ( murder)and finally execute their plans infront of you and your child is screaming mummy , mummy ..they hang her infront of you and harvest all the organs with blood and gore ..My God … Tell me , what would you say.?

What kind of people do we we have in Singapore ? .. What kind of lawyers we have ? What kind of judges we have ?Do they not have children ?

Im tired of hearing the following :

“Hey Ravi , don’t be emotional” …”be detached sweetheart ..be professional ..focus on the next best billing on the files ..clients come and go…”

So , it’s another file only to be closed, another bill to be chased ,right? And these are touted as the best practices of law”.

    Enough is enough !!!!!!

JUSTICE FOR RIDZUAN AND OTHERS AND INTERNATIONAL ACTIONS

I will be opening an account this week to raise funds for my travel to several countries including New York,Canada, France , Germany , Britain, Spain and New Zealand to maintain legal actions against the Singapore authorities on behalf of Ridzuan and other victims ,their families and friends . The global action will be called JUSTICE for Ridzuan . I thank the international community and the international human rights lawyers for their wonderful support and solidarity .

The account would be PayPal account so that the Singapore government cannot monitor or freeze the account and any attempts to do will be met with legal sanctions .

I look forward to your generous support. I will give an estimate of the amount to be raised shortly. I will be leaving for New York in 3 weeks to instruct lawyers to file the first case there with press conference which will be aired Facebook live internationally . Singapore representatives will be invited to the Press Conferences in the respective jurisdictions in question. . See if they turn up . There will be protests as well in major cities against Singapore authorities and leaders ( but not its people )for crimes against humanity under the Rome Statute and or other international instruments which you will find out when these cases are filed in the international courts and warrants issued.

    So help me God.

  • M Ravi Files Constitutional Challenge Against Changes To Elected Presidency

M Ravi Files Constitutional Challenge Against Changes To Elected Presidency

Human rights lawyer M. Ravi yesterday filed a constitutional challenge against changes to the elected presidency made last year.

The changes, which Parliament approved last November, tighten the qualifying criteria for candidates, and include a provision to reserve a presidential election for candidates from a racial group that has not been represented in the office for five continuous terms.

Mr Ravi argues that the changes are unconstitutional because they deprive citizens of their right to stand for public office and discriminate on the grounds of ethnicity.

The High Court confirmed that Mr Ravi had filed an originating summons and supporting affidavit.

A spokesman for the Attorney-General’s Chambers told The Straits Times that “it will study the papers” filed by Mr Ravi.

Mr Ravi, currently a non-practising lawyer, said on Facebook that he filed the application in his capacity as a private citizen.

His is the second legal challenge related to the elected presidency mounted this month.

On May 5, former presidential candidate Tan Cheng Bock filed a challenge over whether the upcoming presidential election should be a reserved one.

Unlike Dr Tan, Mr Ravi challenges the entire reserved election mechanism as unconstitutional, he said on Facebook yesterday.

He believes that the elected presidency is not consistent with Article 12(2) of the Constitution.

It states that unless expressly authorised by the Constitution, there shall be no discrimination against Singapore citizens on the ground only of religion, race, descent or place of birth in any law, or in the appointment to any office, or employment under a public authority.

“The right to stand for the elected presidency should be no different from the right to participate in parliamentary elections – all citizens should be equal,” he wrote.

“The selection of the elected candidate should be based on merit, all other relevant requirements being fulfilled.”

Mr Ravi also contends the amendments run counter to a legal principle called the basic structure doctrine, which he says applies here.

  • Amos Yee Allegedly In Solitary Confinement In The US For Insulting Muslims In Jail

Amos Yee Allegedly In Solitary Confinement In The US For Insulting Muslims In Jail

According to a Facebook post which has since been deleted, teen blogger Amos Yee is currently in solitary confinement for criticising Muslims and Islam during their Muslim Studies in jail; and that he is feeling terrible about it.

According to Nina Palay who set up the relocation fund appeal for Yee, this is what happened.

“He attended a Muslim Studies class, in order to “disagree”. There was a “Muslim pastor” from outside (not a prisoner) and about 18 Muslim prisoners in attendance. Amos called Allah a “sky wizard”. He said that if the religion is 5,000 years old then it’s “complete fucking garbage”. (He said “fuck” a lot). He said that the Quran has passages instructing the devout to kill non-Muslims; the pastor handed him the Quran and challenged him to show such passages, and when Amos said “Ok, I will”, the pastor took the Quran back.

The pastor claimed “The Quran was the most respected and popular book in the U.S.”

The pastor said Amos was disturbing the peace or something and got Sergeant R.Henson to sign a form putting him in solitary. Amos is certain that he is in solitary for punitive reasons, not for his own protection.

He has been in solitary for 3 days. He doesn’t know how long he will be there. They don’t let him write, don’t give him paper. They let him out for one hour per day.

Amos was “kicking, screaming, and banging the door yelling “LET ME OUT”, other prisoners heard him, the “police” came, opened his door, took a look, and left.

Amos wants us to “tell his story” on Facebook, share with the global secular human rights movement, get on CNN and the Rubin Report. He wants the Rubin Report to interview me and Melissa to tell Amos’s story. “These people don’t know what they’re messing with. We gotta destroy them.” “MAKE IT BIG”. “This is a free speech issue and everyone will be on my side”.

    ++++

My main concern right now is for Amos’s mental health. Solitary must be making it much worse.”
