Chef Bob: Tolerate Sikit Lah Burning Of Offerings During Hungry Ghost Month

Ok guys. Our Buddhist/Taoist/Chinese brothers and sisters have started praying for their hungry ghost month. Please tolerate with their burning of offerings. How many days only what??!!

If the bins are near to those living in lower floors like mine, try asking them nicely to move it to a further location. If they decline, find other means to combat with the smoke and soot. Close your windows. Blast your fans. Don’t complain but find a solution.
If there’s a getai show, enjoy the entertainment. Start a mosh pit or something. Another excuse for you to leave the house and jalan2. ?

If need be to call the police, do it in a civilised manner. The men in blue have much bigger problems to attend to. And please don’t bitch about it in social media. If I see any, I won’t hesitate to block you unless you owe me money lah. That one must settle ah. Then I’ll block you. ????

Love begets love. Respect begets respect.

“Allah does not forbid you to be just and righteous towards those who did not go into battle against you (over matters of faith), and did not expel you from your homes. Deal with them justly. Allah loves those who are just.” The Holy Quran, Chapter 60, Verse 8.

    Wallahualam bisawab.

  • More PAP Candidates Spoted At 7th Month Festival Getai, Despite Police Warning

More PAP Candidates Spoted At 7th Month Festival Getai, Despite Police Warning

Despite clear warnings from the police that election rallies and Seventh Month Festival getai shows are to be kept separate, three PAP candidates were seen appealing for support at a getai show on Saturday evening.

Getai, which literally means “song stage” in Chinese, refers to variety performances which entertain both the living and the dead staged during this month.

The police had issued a statement on August 14 which said:

Getai performances and other forms of stage performances and entertainment are strictly not allowed before, during or after election rallies.

It also placed a burden on organizers of getai performances not to allow candidates to canvass for support.

Festival event organisers should ensure that no speeches intended to canvass support for election candidates and/or political parties are delivered (at) Seventh Month Festival events.

Last evening, at a getai Show organised by YYD Tuition Center, PAP candidates Teo Ser Luck, Gan Thiam Poh and new face Sun Xueling were present.

A reader sent in photos of their faces being projected on the stage.

Not long after their faces were shown, the PAP candidates appeared in person.

In what appears to be a clear breach of the warnings by the police, the candidates were then seen to make their way around the hall to meet the audience.

They were also on stage to give away prizes to a crowd of at least a thousand people.

The event had all the making of a 7th month Getai show with altars set up behind a a large crowd coming to watch a free show.

TOC has written in to the police to notify them of a possible breach of law and we are currently awaiting their response.

On 4th September, another PAP candidate, Lee Bee Wah, also made an appearance at a getai in Nee Soon, where she is contesting in the elections.

Ms Lee was photographed on stage, and was reported to have been promoted by the emcee of the event. A member of the public who was there told TOC that the emcee had urged the audience to vote for her in the election. This would be a clear breach of election rules and police warning issued in August.

  • Toastbox Staff Burns Incense Paper In Within Premises, Whole Store Very Smokey

Toastbox Staff Burns Incense Paper In Within Premises, Whole Store Very Smokey

    Dear ToastBox,

There is no sense of customer-orientedness in the companies in your chain. I was at Toastbox at Rail Mall this afternoon and found that the store was very smoky.

At first I was alarmed because I thought it was a fire but later my colleague told me it was because a staff member had been burning incense for the Hungry Ghost Festival inside the hidden kitchen area or immediately outside it (he had been told by the PRC kitchen assistant).

Is this really proper behaviour in an eatery?

If true, this seriously violates hygiene standards and is a major fire safety offence. NEA and SCDF should step in immediately to investigate the case.

In response to this complaint, ToastBox said:

“Hi Caroline, We apologize for the unpleasant experience you encountered at our Rail Mall outlet. Could you also let us know the time of your visit so our team can investigate this immediately. Thank you.”

  • SCDF Issues Fire Safety Tips For 7th Month Rituals

SCDF Issues Fire Safety Tips For 7th Month Rituals

With the lunar seventh month starting on Friday, Aug 14, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) has advised the public to be careful when burning incense paper and joss sticks.

In a fire safety advisory issued on Thursday, the SCDF gave several tips to minimise the likelihood of fires occurring.

It advised the public to always burn incense paper in incense burners or metal containers, which should be placed on sturdy ground, away from combustible materials and locations such as switch rooms and residential premises.

Fires should be completely extinguished and the areas around the burners kept free of smouldering incense and embers.

Lighted materials such as candles and matches should not be thrown onto grass patches and fields to avoid accidentally starting a fire, the SCDF noted.

  • Getais, Other Forms Of Stage Performances Not Allowed Before, During Or After Election Rallies

Getais, Other Forms Of Stage Performances Not Allowed Before, During Or After Election Rallies

There will be no getai performances and other forms of stage performances and entertainment allowed before, during or after election rallies, said the police on Friday (Aug 14).

Seventh Month event organisers should also ensure that no speeches intended to canvass support for election candidates or political parties are delivered during these events, it added in a press release, saying this is stipulated under the Public Order (Election Meetings) Regulations 2009.

Additionally, outdoor rallies for the upcoming General Election should be held only at designated rally sites, and the police will make available sufficient rally sites to contesting parties or independent candidates for this purpose, it said.

“The ballot method used to allocate rally sites in the 2012 and 2013 by-elections will also be used for the upcoming General Election to allocate rally sites,” said police.

“To ensure contesting parties and independent candidates have more opportunities to use their preferred rally sites on their preferred dates, a ‘give-way’ rule will be implemented. Parties that have been allocated a site will have to ‘give way’ to other applicants that apply for the same site at the same timeslot on the following day,” it added.

To ensure every GE contestant can hold at least one outdoor rally within the last two to three nights of campaigning, a “block ballot” method will be implemented in constituencies where the number of contesting parties and/or independent candidates is more than the number of rally sites, said the police.

Under the block ballot method, the last two to three nights for rally sites will be grouped together for application as a block. Contesting parties and independent candidates can only apply for one site on one night within the block, it explained.

The allocation of outdoor assembly centre sites on Counting Night will also be done via a ballot method, according to the press release.

Details on the application and allocation process for rally sites and assembly centre sites will be released after the Writ of Election is issued, police said.
