    Ikhsan Fandi Gives Singapore U23 A Win Over India In SEA Games Boost

    A penalty by Ikhsan Fandi helped the Singapore Under-23 national team claim a 1-0 win against their India counterparts in a friendly at Choa Chu Kang Stadium on Wednesday night.

    The result is a morale-booster for Richard Tardy’s charges before they depart for the AFC U23 Championship qualifiers next week, and it was achieved without injured key players Irfan Fandi and Adam Swandi.

    The Young Lions put up a starkly improved performance compared to a 1-0 defeat to the same opponents on Sunday, and could have scored as early as the seventh minute.

    Haiqal Pashia Anugurah went through on goal, via Hami Syahin’s pass, but the left winger’s goalbound shot was cleared off the line.

    The Young Lions created another good opening midway through the first half. Haiqal sent Ikhsan in the clear, but the latter was superbly closed down by India goalkeeper Vishal Kaith.

    India responded when towering forward Manvir Singh sending his header straight into Zharfan Rohaizad’s arms on 26 minutes.

    Singapore could have broken the deadlock six minutes before half-time, but Ikhsan’s 25-yard free kick sailed wide of the left-hand post.

    The Young Lions earned a penalty in the 51st minute with substitute Syahrul Sazali being felled illegally in the box.

    Ikhsan, second son of Singapore legend Fandi Ahmad, stepped up and slammed the resulting spot kick in off the bar to put the home side 1-0 up.

    Tardy’s charges could have doubled their advantage seven minutes later. However, captain Illyas Lee’s spectacular volley from outside the area went inches wide.

    Singapore’s intensity dropped towards the end with India almost finding an equaliser on 76 minutes.

    Manvir’s fierce snapshot from inside the area seemed destined for the bottom right corner, before Singapore substitute goalkeeper Hairul Syirhan pulled off a stunning save to tip it around the post.

    The Young Lions’ 1-0 win bodes well for the upcoming AFC U23 Championship qualifers in Mynamr and next month’s Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Kuala Lumpur.

    Irfan, Ikhsan Fandi Wanted By Chile Team

    Fandi Ahmad’s two eldest sons Irfan and Ikhsan could turn out for one of Chile’s top-flight clubs in 2018, with a professional football career in South America on the cards for the duo after they complete National Service (NS).

    Former Singapore striker Fandi revealed on Friday (March 17) that Chilean side Club Deportivo Universidad Catolica have been in touch regarding the possibility of a return for Irfan, 19 and Ikhsan, 17.

    The pair had spent two years with title holders Catolica from 2014 to 2015, before they returned to Singapore last January to sign with S.League giants Home United. In April 2016, they enlisted for NS, with Irfan in the Singapore Police Force and Ikhsan in the army.

    Speaking on the sidelines of a Milo event at Plaza Singapura, Fandi said the family had been contacted by Catolica’s technical director of youth development.

    “They’ve still got about 11 months (left in NS),” said the 54-year-old. “I’m not sure (whether we will accept) … we will see what happens, because Irfan is doing not too badly with Home and also training with the national (senior) team. I hope he gets better and gets more exposure, and for Ikhsan as well. At the end of the day, we can only advise on what is best for them.”

    Irfan, who had previously turned down a four-year contract offer from Catolica in favour of returning to fulfil his NS obligations, has started five of Home’s six games this season. The striker-turned-defender has also been called up to the Lions squad for their upcoming Asian Cup qualifier against Bahrain.

    Ikhsan, a striker, has been registered with the Garena Young Lions for 2017, though he has yet to make an appearance.

    Ikhsan Fandi Stars In U16s’ Comeback

    They will play no part in tomorrow’s final of the Lion City Cup (LCC) after losing to a Liverpool side a year younger than they are but, last night at the Jalan Besar Stadium, the Republic’s Under-16 side could well have written the first paragraph of a rather special story.

    Three goals down at half-time and staring down the barrel of a resounding thumping, Ikhsan Fandi stepped up to a role his father played with distinction all those years ago in the inaugural LCC in 1977, and for various Singapore teams after.

    The 16-year-old scored what in football parlance is known as the perfect hat-trick — one goal with the left foot, another with the right, and comleting his treble with a header — all in the space of just 11 second-half minutes  to pull his team back on level terms.

    Robin Chitrakar’s boys may have lost 5-3 on penalties, but this was no one-man team.

    With the effervescent Saifullah Akbar, a dependable Elliot Ng in midfield, and a supporting cast that included Idraki Adnan and Alif Iskandar, Singapore could well be looking at a special generation of players.
