Indonesia Arrests Top MIT Militant Muhammad Basri

Indonesian police Wednesday arrested a man they claim took control of the militant group Eastern Indonesia Mujahidin (MIT) following the death of leader Santoso, cutting the number of its members at large to a dozen.

Muhammad Basri, a 41-year-old deputy to Santoso, whose MIT swore allegiance to Islamic State (IS), was caught in Tangkura village in Central Sulawesi province’s Poso Regency along with his wife, Nurmi Orman (also known as Oma), officials said. Police said they also recovered the body of another suspected MIT member.

Basri’s arrest further weakens MIT, according to terrorism analyst Taufik Andrie.

“Their movement is already limited, their choices are few because their ammunition is lacking. So it is expected that soon they will be caught dead or alive,” Taufik, executive director of the Institute for International Peacebuilding in Jakarta, told BenarNews.

Authorities said they captured Basri and his wife, who were on the national police’s most wanted list, soon after discovering the body of a suspected MIT member Andika in a local river. The cause of his death remained unclear.

“After discovering the body we carried out an investigation at the scene. We found Basri not far from the river and his wife trapped in the river. They were immediately arrested,” provincial police spokesman Hari Suprapto told reporters.

Police did not release details about how Nurmi was trapped. A homemade bomb was found in a vest that Andika was wearing, and Basri was not armed, police said.

Another suspect MIT militant, Adji Pandu (alias Suwotono or Subron), was with the group but escaped from a joint security task force, officials said.

Members of Operation Tinombala, a task force comprising police officers and soldiers and that was set up to hunt down Santoso’s group, are now searching for Adji and the other 11 MIT members who remain at large.

Hundreds of security personnel have been on the ground in remote Poso regency since January 2015 in two operations code-named Camar Maleo and Tinombala.

Officers transported Basri and his wife to a military hospital in Palu around 4 p.m. (local time). After arriving, Basri smiled and bowed his head, but did not answer reporters’ questions.

“Let him go in to be examined first,” Police commander Guruh Arif Darmawan told the journalists.

    Sought in many cases

Police claim that Basri took the lead of MIT following the death of Santoso on July 18. Until then, Santoso (alias Abu Wardah) was  Indonesia’s most wanted militant.

According to police, Basri allegedly had roles in 18 criminal cases during his time with MIT.

“Basri was involved in the mutilation of three schoolgirls in Tentena on Oct. 29, 2005,” Central Sulawesi police chief Brig. Gen. Rudy Sufahriadi said recently.

Born Mohammad Basri bin Baco Sampe, the militant has several aliases including Bagong, Opa and Ayas. Basri left his first wife to join MIT, and later married Nurmi in April 2013. Her first husband was a MIT militant killed in Poso, police said.

    ‘No more blood in Poso’

In recent weeks, a team of humanitarian workers and human rights activists had joined efforts to persuade the few remaining MIT holdouts  to surrender to the authorities peacefully.

“By involving family, friends and relatives, this can give a guarantee of safety without involving bloodshed. I think MIT members need to consider the government’s offer,” Taufik said.

Imdadun Rahmat, the head of National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM), traveled to the provincial capital, Palu, two weeks ago to plead to authorities that they treat the remaining militants at large humanely.

“We continue to support and encourage the government initiative to restore the losses suffered by the community following the conflict in Poso, and urge good treatment of those prisoners who were captured alive,” Imdadun told reporters at the time.

Rudy, the local police chief, echoed that sentiment.

“The main point is, no more blood in Poso. We are taking these steps together, prioritizing a persuasive approach,” Rudy said at the time as he called again on the remaining militants to give up.

Indonesia Ulema Council Issues Haram Fatwa Against Illegal Land Clearing

RELIGIOUS authorities in Indonesia have declared the burning of land forbidden among Muslims in a fatwa or edict aimed at curbing illegal land clearing.

According to Channel News Asia, the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) issued the fatwa in its bid to influence social change as part of a moral movement.

“The act of burning forests and land, which can cause damage, environmental pollution, economic losses, affect health, and other negative impacts is haram (forbidden),” Professor Huzaemah Yanggo, chairperson for fatwa from the Indonesian Ulema Council, was quoted as saying.

Huzaeman, who was speaking at a media conference on Tuesday, said the council was confident that the ruling can help change attitudes towards the illegal burning of land.

The council denounced the traditional practice, saying it goes against Islamic teachings, and instructed clerics and religious teachers to spread the message.

Indonesia’s Environment and Forestry Ministry had in January asked the council to explore the possibility of issuing the ruling on forest fires.

The request led the council to conduct research and assessments before issuing the edict this week.

Prior to the decision, the council consulted various stakeholders and referred to verses in the Koran to substantiate the fatwa.

“We understand that material punishment is not enough, what more with formal punishment. What is more important is moral (pressure),” Indonesia’s Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya Bakar said.

Last year’s fires were the worst since 1997, spreading across over 261,000 hectares (2,610 square kilometers).

Haze largely caused by illegal slash-and-burn agricultural policies in Indonesia has affected the Southeast Asian region annually for decades.

Uncontrolled burning from fires in Riau, South Sumatra, and Kalimantan causes the smoke to spread hundreds of kilometers across the region to Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and the Philippines, resulting in major deterioration in air quality levels, health problems, and economic losses.

However, the Indonesian government has been taking proactive steps to reduce the number of fires by 75 percent from last year as there were only 2,256 fires this year compared to 8,247 between Jan and Aug 2015.

  • Woman: Maid Abused My Elderly Mum Behind My Back

Woman: Maid Abused My Elderly Mum Behind My Back

The maid had been looking after her elderly mother for almost two years, and they seemed to get along well.

It never occurred to the daughter, who wanted to be known only as Ms L.C. Ng, that it was all an act.

The reality was that, behind her back, Indonesian national Murni Panengsih, 25, repeatedly abused her 96-year-old mother.

The maid slapped and elbowed her, pulled her hair, and, on one occasion, even stuck medical tape over her mouth before beating her.

The abuse came to light after Ms Ng checked a live feed from closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in the three-room flat in Lavender.

On Monday, Murni was sentenced to 10 months’ jail after pleading guilty to five of 15 charges related to hurting the elderly woman.

Ms Ng told The New Paper yesterday evening: “You would never think that somebody who looks so harmless and acts so sweetly towards your mother could do such evil things behind your back.”

    NEVER SUSPECTED

The IT consultant in her 50s said she had never suspected the abuse going on in her home because Murni would “sayang” (Malay for love) her mother whenever she was around, and would even ask to sit next to the old woman at meal times.

“I feel so silly, thinking back. She must have threatened my mother and deliberately kept close to her,” said Ms Ng

She had hired Murni (below) in December 2013 to take care of her mother, who was bedridden and suffered from weak kidneys and diabetes.

Her mother also showed signs of dementia, but was never formally diagnosed.

Her mother died in December last year, following a urinary tract infection, about three months after the abuse was discovered.

Ms Ng had on occasion noticed bruises on her mother’s hands and face, but Murni would feign ignorance when she was questioned about them.

Her mother never said a word about being ill-treated, so Ms Ng thought she must have hurt herself accidentally.

“My mother had previously said that someone was trying to kill her, but she would occasionally imagine things, so my elder brother and I thought she was confused,” said Ms Ng.

“If she had just said something about being ill-treated, we would have done something about it.”

Ms Ng finally found out about the abuse on Sept 17 last year when she decided to check the live CCTV feed on her mobile phone while at work.

She had installed CCTV cameras in the flat a few years ago after a previous maid was discovered to have brought male strangers home.

Ms Ng said she usually checked the live feed once in a while, but had never seen Murni ill-treating her mother until that afternoon when she hit the elderly woman multiple times.

“I phoned her immediately and shouted at her.

“Afterwards, she WhatsApped me to apologise.”

Ms Ng started reviewing past video footage and discovered that Murni had abused her mother on many occasions.

Her brother went to the flat to check, but their mother and the maid both said nothing had happened.

When Ms Ng returned home later that evening, she asked her mother about Murni in the latter’s presence.

“My mother said good things about her, even that she was well-behaved. When I heard that, my heart ached so much,” she said.

“My mother was quite an outspoken woman, and it was beyond my imagination that she would be reduced to that state because she feared (Murni).”

When Murni went to take a shower, Ms Ng told her mother that she knew about the abuse and would make a police report and send the maid away.

“She said, ‘Good. You saved my life.’ Hearing those words was so painful, I don’t know how long she suffered under that woman,” said Ms Ng, who broke down halfway through the interview.

She made a police report the next day.

Her mother was examined at a nearby clinic and the doctor found that she had a black eye, bruising all over her face and arms, an abrasion on her right ear, and swelling and bruising on both ankles.

The medical report said the locations and nature of the bruising were consistent with an assault or repeated violence.

Ms Ng said her mother must have been traumatised because she never spoke of the abuse even after Murni left.

“I can only say that I’m glad Murni got caught so other people will not suffer under her hands.”

My mother had previously said that someone was trying to kill her, but she would occasionally imagine things, so my elder brother and I thought she was confused.
