    Woman Who Threw pork At Malay Neighbour’s Flat In Tampines Pleads Guilty

    The woman who threw pork at a Malay neighbour’s flat in Tampines pleaded guilty to two charges on Thursday (27 April).

    Lee Dji Lin, 63, admitted to one charge of deliberately wounding the religious and racial feelings of her neighbour and another charge under the Protection of Harassment Act (POHA) before District Judge Eddy Tham in the State Courts. Another charge under POHA was taken into consideration.

    Lee committed the offences against her neighbour, Marliah Jonet, 61, in June last year.

    In July last year, Marliah spoke to Yahoo Singapore about the incidents and said that Lee had been harassing her family for six years. Former model Hanis Hussey, Marliah’s sister-in-law, posted a video on YouTube last year, allegedly showing Lee being caught in the act.

    Reading from the statement of facts, Deputy Public Prosecutor Ruth Teng said that Marliah lodged a police report that someone had thrown pork meat outside her flat in Tampines.

    On 18 June 2016, Marliah opened the door to let her daughter in, and she noticed what appeared to be a piece of raw meat outside her flat. She decided to view footage recorded in her CCTV, which she had installed outside her flat.

    The footage revealed that Lee had thrown the meat from a lift towards Marliah’s flat. Forensic investigations later confirmed that the meat was pork.

    The court also heard that on 14 June 2016, Marliah heard Lee shouting from her kitchen window. Marliah’s flat is located on the ninth floor while Lee was staying directly below her.

    When Marliah went to her kitchen, she saw Lee holding a bamboo pole with a female undergarment attached to the end of the pole and swinging it upwards, towards her kitchen window.

    Judge Tham ordered Lee to get a Mandatory Treatment Order suitability report from the Institute of Mental Health. Lee will be back in court on 25 May for sentencing.

    Malay-Muslim scholars and thinkers regrouped under the Islamic Renaissance Front (IRF) are not in favor of the presence of Islamic preacher Zakir Naik in Malaysia, and his involvement in local political matters.

    In a long article entitled “Zakir Naik’s Appeal and the Quagmire of Inter-Religious Relations in Malaysia“ published on June 17, 2016, by Singaporean based interfaith group Left Right and Center creator Mohamed Imran Mohamed Taib.

    In the article, Mohamed Imran explained the reasons why Zakir is diverting from the real issues of ‘comparative religion’ debates, into that of a politically charged engagement in Malaysia.

    He said Zakir’s presence in Malaysia may have bad fallout on the country’s religious harmony.

    He urged for the replacement of the ‘confrontational’ religious education with one that builds approaches, reconcile and create a sense of respect for each other, to accept diversity and difference. and the desire to jointly pursue the common good in a spirit of peace, justice and equality between religious and non-religious communities.

    “While politics can often derail this process, it is important to work towards building a community that can fight the tide effort to seed the dispute.

    He said these actions may not be carried out by outright prohibition, which would instantly make them martyrs in religion classes and strengthen the “conspiracy theory” against Islam.

    “In contrast is the strong effort to show that the relationship between religion will be harmed if Zakir Naik is left unchecked.

    Damanhuri Abas: Scandals Show That High Salary Is Not The Answer To Eradicate Corruption

    The trail of scandals spanning just the last decade along the corridors of power, sadly results from the chronic malaise of institutionalised governance when a single dominant party rule continues unabated.

    We had the following scandals, CEO of NFK, TT Durai in 2005, Edwin Yeo of CPIB in 2008, Peter Lim Chief of SCDF in 2013, Lim Cheng Ho of MFA in 2014, Bernard Lim Yong Soon of NParks in 2014, CEO of NKF, Edmond Kwok 2016, and most recently, Kong Hee and Friends of City Harvest Church, 2017. Just to list a few of them.

    And we also had the personal indiscretion of PAP MPs in the case of Speaker of Parliament Mr Micheal Palmer and the infamous affair involving PAP MP for Bukit Batok that happened only last year, Mr David Ong and his married grassroots woman volunteer.

    Now we have the latest scandal involving none other than a former Mayor and PAP MP Zainudin Nordin further reminding the people to seriously relook at all PAP leaders. They are not as clean as their white garment looks.

    The list of corruptions in their ranks and files of cronies as well as their leaders are undeniable facts and not fake news. It is crystal clear now to all Singaporeans that the logic of high pay and incorruptible public officers or leaders are hollow PAP sloganeering promising leaders of integrity and merit but delivering otherwise.

    Will the PAP reform and correct themselves? Most unlikely as the signs are showing the opposite, seen from the constitutional amendments on the Elected Presidency to the most recent clipping of further Presidential powers passed in parliament.

    We are even seeing more reduction of space for critical input and feedback which are necessary and healthy developments needed for reform and progress in a maturing democracy. They in fact, do the reverse to entrench their unchallenged controlling power. They still prefer to trust their own self-checking and the above samplings of scandals suffices to discredit it.

    All hegemonic power feels threatened by the natural God ordained system of check and balance. Their obsession with perpetual and absolute control will become their very undoing. History recalls many past powers wanting to remain so even though their time is up. Eventually they went astray falling from grace on their own highway of luxury and greed.

    Singaporeans therefore must do our part by intervening to stop this slippery decline down the slope of democratic regression happening before our very eyes. The only way to do so, is to put into parliament more oppositions to raise the vital questions that they themselves will not. The longer we delay, the tougher it becomes, as they will resort to all machavillian means within their vast controlling disposal to ensure their hegemony remains forever.

    The stakes are very high. It is about our believe in the Singaporean spirit to rise up to collectively remake and better our citizen’s deal. To share what we have with each other, to not leave anyone behind and to demand from our elected leaders, service and priority to the people and not their vested crony interest. The scandals are reminders of what is wrong in our society and for us to collectively act together as one united people to affect that vital redirection for our beloved nation.

    Singaporeans must realise that the only constant is change. Ours is past due. The People needs a New Deal with a very fresh and vibrant New face of real Hope, Integrity, Honesty, Courage and Humility. God-willing, together we can make it happen.

    Malaysia Airlines Bhd’s (MAB) chief executive Peter Bellew has revealed more details on the flag carrier’s plan to offer charter flights for Muslims to perform the Haj and Umrah pilgrimages in Saudi Arabia.

    In an interview with CNN Money, Bellew said six Airbus A380 jetliners will be retired from service and refurbished to include prayer areas and ablution rooms for its passengers.

    “I think this will be the greatest turnaround in the history of aviation and maybe even of any business,” Bellew was quoted saying.

    Bellew said the jumbo jets will carry 715 passengers, compared to 525 people in the usual three-class configuration or 853 in an all-economy class configuration.

    “We are trying to capture 5 to 6 per cent of the global market, which is growing all the time,” said Bellew, a former executive at low-cost Irish carrier Ryanair.

    “People save to go to this for up to 30 years, and we’ve got great interest in the product already.”

    In Malaysia, most Muslims fund their pilgrimages using deposits in Lembaga Tabung Haji, and adhere to a national quota imposed by the Saudi kingdom. The wait could take decades before they actually perform the pilgrimage.

    Last month, Bellew said MAB could form a new airline to serve the Haj and Umrah charter market.

    “Interviews for key positions, for this airline, have already been initiated with plans underway with Airbus to increase the seat capacity to 720 seats on aircraft,” he told state news agency Bernama.

    The airline said it recorded a stronger performance in the fourth quarter of last year on the back of higher bookings and driven by a greater focus on the premium business traveller as well as all-inclusive economy fares.

    Amaiya Zafar, a Muslim teen boxer from Minnesota, has won the right to compete in the ring in the US while also adhering to her religious beliefs that require her to cover her arms and legs.

    “This is a big step,” her coach, Nathaniel Haile, said Thursday as cited by The Star Tribune. “She’s put a lot of labor into this. She earned the right to showcase her skills, and I’m happy for her. But it’s just the first step in letting her achieve her dreams.”

     

     

    While this is a significant milestone in her fledgling career, the ambitious 16-year-old has many battles ahead of her both in and outside the ring.

    Her first sanctioned bout is scheduled to take place later this month on April 29 at the Spring Fling Amateur Boxing match in Minneapolis, but her right to compete extends only as far as the US border, resigning her to competing on the national stage for the time being.

     

    Zafar has set her sights higher, however, and in order to reach her stated goal of competing at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo she will have to spar with AIBA, the international boxing organization, for the right to compete in her modest attire.

    “We welcome this partial victory and look forward to the day when athletes of all faiths may compete nationally and internationally while maintaining their religious principles,” Ibrahim Hooper, director of communications for the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) said in a statement.

    “[Amaiya] has wanted this for so long,” her mother told The Star Tribune about her upcoming amateur bout.

    Zafar came close to fighting at a competition in Florida, only to be turned away after successfully weighing in, as her attire was in breach of competition rules.

    “You get so invested. My weight is in the right place. My head is in the game,” she said. To be turned away — “it’s exhausting,” she said of the experience.

    “She fought for other Muslim youths,” coach Haile said of the up-and-coming pugilist.
