PUTRAJAYA: Local products with the ‘E’ code in their halal certificate can be consumed by Muslims, according to the Malaysia Islamic Development Department (Jakim).

Jakim Director-General Datuk Othman Mustapha said food products with the E code or number on the labels were not necessarily processed through haram or prohibited sources.

“However, consumers should be cautious if the product has an E code but is not processed locally and does not have the Malaysian halal certification,” he said in a statement, here, today.

He said the E code referred to additives and commonly used by European Union countries, Australia, New Zealand, northern America particularly Canada, and Israel.

“The numbering scheme is based on the International Numbering System set by the Codex Alimentarius Committee.

“It is a collection of various standards, codes of practice, recognised international guidelines related to food, food processing and food safety aimed at safeguarding public health and to ensure compliance with the ethical trading code of conduct,” he said.

    Additives are labelled as follows:

    E100 – E199 – colour
    E200 – E299 – preservatives
    E300 – E399 – oxidants, phosphates, anti-oxidants and acid inhibitors
    E400 – E499 – thickeners, moisturisers, stabilisers and emulsifiers
    E500 – E599 – salt, acidity regulators and anti-caking agents
    E600 – E699 – flavour enhancers
    E900 – E999 – sweeteners and glazing agents
    E1000- E1999 – additional chemicals

“Not all additives with the E serial number to make food products are from non-halal sources. The sources of the additives could be plants, synthetic, microbes, natural, chemicals and animals,” said Othman.

However, he said, E471, a mono and diglyceride emulsifier, had been the most queried additive.

“It is synthetic fat derived from glycerol and natural fatty acids found in plants such as oil palm or animal fat.

“It is generally a compound of various edible substances similar to natural fat,” he said.

Othman urged food industry players to clearly define the additives in their products so as to leave no room for doubts among Muslim consumers as to the food’s status.

Jakim through its Halal Hub division would also require companies which apply for the halal certificate to fully declare the contents of their products including additives, he said.– BERNAMA

  • Pink Dot Penang 2014 Dikecam ABIM

    pinkdotpenag2014

  • Silk Batik is Haram/Prohibited in Islam

    Asean_leaders_wear_batik_afp_840_523_100

The Muslim Consumers Association of Malaysia (PPIM) said many Muslims here are unaware of this fact, which it said is enshrined in several hadiths, also known as the collection of words and deeds of the Prophet Muhammad.

“Rasulullah SAW has said that Muslim men cannot wear silk and gold.

“Hadiths also state that one of the tanda kiamat (signs of the apocalypse) is when pure silk is being worn, and that there is no awareness about this,” PPIM activist Sheikh Abd Kareem S Khadaied told reporters at a press conference here.

Batik is a form of textile art often marketed as a national heritage in Muslim-majority Malaysia and Indonesia.

Government leaders and religious figures here commonly use batik, which comes in a variety of materials, including pure silk, rayon and cotton, for official functions.

But Sheikh Abd Kareem said pure silk cannot be the way to go for Muslim men and suggested that alternatives to the material be used instead.

He took aim at the Malaysian Handicraft Development Corporation, saying that it had not done anything to research on alternative materials besides pure silk to make batik, despite having enough funds to do so.

“In the current industry most of the silk batik worn by Muslim men is pure  silk. Only about ten per cent is silk mixture,” he said.

When asked to explain how PPIM might make non-Muslims understand the reasoning behind the banning of pure silk for Muslim men, Sheikh Abd Kareem said it was unnecessary.

“When the Prophet says it is forbidden, that means it is forbidden, we listen and abide by it.

“Logic is a (part of human) desire,” he added, saying that when it came to Islam one should not demand a reasoning or explanation on a matter.

But Sheikh pointed out that PPIM had no problems with batik cloths which used silk mixed with other materials such as linen and cotton as there was no hadith which forbade this.

He said he had brought the matter up with the National Fatwa Council and the Malaysian Islamic Department (Jakim) but they have yet to provide a solution on the matter.

“There has to be labelling done on each batik cloth for that people will know it is pure silk and therefore haram,” Sheikh said.

  • Jakim is a ‘pervert’

    kasus-khalwat-mesum-dominasi-pelanggaran-syariat-islam-di-aceh

COMMENT:  Jakim is at best a ‘pervert’ for condemning Valentine’s Day and abusing the Friday sermons to incite racial unrest. The department seems to be enjoying playing the devil’s advocate.

Last year, just days before the Allah issue returned to court, the Department of Islamic Development of Malaysia (Jakim)  rebuked non-Muslims for challenging the Muslim faith by insisting on using the word.

“The position of Islam is being threatened from every corner. We must be aware of our responsibility in this issue.

“These are the rights of Muslims that cannot be intruded by anyone as it will affect the beliefs and thoughts of Muslims,” Jakim’s sermon went.

Looks like the Islamic department is getting carried away with its responsibilities, so much so that its focus has turned fuzzy.

Jakim pushed the religion envelope a little too far when it declared as “unlawful” a  YouTube clip of Maznah Mohd Yusof and her three dogs which went viral.

However, the “attack Valentine’s Day” campaign is Jakim’s all-time favourite.

The department has engaged in a perpetual war with Valentine’s Day, spinning yarns about how morally damaging the event is.

In Jakim’s calendar, February 14 is marked as ‘Valentine’ Day bashing’ with the department trying every trick in the book to defame the occasion, calling it the ‘devil’ of all evils.

Thirteen years ago, authorities arrested nearly 100 Muslims in a crackdown on Valentine’s Day.

They were detained for khalwat (close proximity), the crime of being alone with a member of the opposite sex other than one’s spouse or close relative.

It can bring up to two years in jail upon conviction in the Syariah courts.

    Jakim spinning lies

Then there were reports that Muslim authorities in Selangor this week launched a leaflet distributing campaign aimed at youths, warning against celebrating Valentine’s Day.

This year’s Valentine’s Day condemnation by Jakim was no different. Jakim has now decided that the country’s many social and moral headaches are all the doing of the Feb 14 event that celebrates love.

It is worrying that Jakim without any solid evidence is holding Valentine’s Day at ransom for the many social ills the nation is facing, be it alcoholism or abortion.

Will Jakim also conveniently blame Valentine’s Day for crimes like corruption, domestic abuse and marital rape?

“Social ceremonies such as this are a stepping-stone towards greater social ills such as fraud, mental disorder caused by alcohol, abortion and baby-dumping, and other negative ills that can invite disaster and moral decay among youths,” Jakim’s official Friday sermon text distributed to mosques read.

Unable to pin-point the exact reason why Muslims of this country have gone astray, Jakim has taken the easy way out by blaming it all on Valentine’s Day.

Misleading the rakyat about the ABCD of Valentine’s Day was bad enough; it was despicable that Jakim abused the Friday sermon to achieve its aim of maligning Valentine’s Day.

“It will begin with lies, mental instability due to alcohol consumption and being pregnant out of wedlock,” the sermon stated.

Jakim’s sermon also said that many young Muslims today lacked faith in Islam, causing them to be easily led astray by practises and culture which do not comply with religion.

“We should not be following practises of Jahiliyah (pre-Islamic times). Doing good alone is not enough if we do not keep our faith in Islam strong.”

Jakim is both irresponsible and pervert in its ‘Valentine’s Day bashing’ campaign through its allegations that the event thrives on promiscuity and other vices.

Truth be told, Jakim’s finger-pointing is a coward’s way out of dealing with the real issues at hand.
