Law Society Orders M Ravi To Stop Legal Practice Pending Medical Examination

The Law Society of Singapore has ordered lawyer M Ravi to stop his legal practice pending a medical examination.

“The Council of the Law Society has received information relating to Mr M Ravi’s impaired fitness to practise and has issued a direction that Mr Ravi stop his legal practice pending a medical examination pursuant to Section 25C(7) of the Legal Profession Act (Cap 161, 2009 Ed),” said the Law Society in response to media queries on Tuesday (Feb 10).

Mr Ravi had reportedly been diagnosed since 2006 with bipolar disorder — which is punctuated by episodes of mania and depression — and was suspended from practising for a year in 2006.

When contacted by TODAY, Mr Ravi said he previously saw his doctor last Monday and he was not uncertified unfit for practice. He added he submitted his monthly medical report two weeks ago stating that he is well and also successfully argued a magistrates’ appeal a few days ago.

“My doctor has not certified me unfit for practice, therefore this comes as a surprise,” said Mr Ravi, in a text message. “I’m consulting my psychiatrist today and will sort this out.”

Separately, the wife of one of the three men charged with disorderly behaviour at the Thaipusam procession on Feb 3, R Angelina, sent an email to the media on Tuesday saying that she had filed an application to the High Court on Feb 5 regarding the Thaipusam incident.

The application listed the Attorney-General, the Hindu Endowments Board and Law Minister K Shanmugam among the defendents. Mr Ravi is listed as the solicitor in charge of the application.

In response, the Attorney-General’s Chambers said it has filed an application to strike out Ms Angelina’s application.

“The Attorney-General’s Chambers has filed an application on behalf of the Attorney-General and the Minister for Law to strike out the Plaintiff’s application on the grounds that it discloses no reasonable cause of action, is scandalous, frivolous and vexatious, and is an abuse of process,” it said in a media release on Tuesday.

  • Has Lawyer M Ravi Had Enough Of His Client CPF Blogger Roy Ngerng?

Has Lawyer M Ravi Had Enough Of His Client CPF Blogger Roy Ngerng?

The following video, believed to have been recorded on Friday, Feb. 6, 2015, outside the Subordinate Courts, shows lawyer M Ravi talking at length about his client, CPF blogger Roy Ngerng.

The purpose of Ravi’s court attendance, as he explains in the video, appears to be for an application for Ngerng to leave Singapore’s jurisdiction to go to Norway.

    But Ngerng didn’t show up.

Here is a snippet of what Ravi said to the camera at 3 minutes 25 seconds:

“And you know what, to date, I’ve done so much of work and he’s keeping all the money, a hundred thousand I guess, to the tune of $70,000 or so. And what has happened?

    He’s now blogging I understand.

Why is he not in this court when he wants to leave jurisdiction today to Norway? The application had been… the court is just waiting for him. Why is he not turning up to court? Why is he not answering anybody? Why is he not calling my office? Why did he not say that ‘Ravi or even a message I’m sorry I’m not turning up, I’m not leaving the country’. There’s no respect for the judge. Yet he has the gall and temerity to say that our judges are corrupted, our judges are not independent and this and that. And what respect do you have?

He goes behind my back, he goes and blogs, you know? And I’m going to discharge, if he is continuing his behaviour, either he goes and see a psychiatrist…

    […]

… because I’m fighting for him tooth and nail and he’s swindling the money.”

    Here is the video:

Update, Feb. 8, 2015, 12.30am: The previous uploaded video is no longer accessible:

A rift appeared to have occurred between lawyer and client when Ravi had to publicly distance himself a few weeks ago from a potentially libellous online article put out by Ngerng and his friends.

Ravi also said Ngerng is “too impulsive” to contest the next General Election with him in the same team.

We’d include more details about the origins of the video when we find out more.

    *Update*

The video was produced by an individual by the name of Teo En Ming, who is popularly known in the Hardwarezone forums as sgvideoman.

Teo raised eyebrows last year when he filed a police report after his Hardwarezone forum account ‘sgvideoman’ was banned from the forums by one of the moderators.

His ‘fame’ on the Hardwarezone forum stemmed from his claim that he is being targeted by the Singapore Government and had lost two jobs because of it. His claim can be found in this Hardwarezone thread titled “(Wanbao material) Guy gets fired for shltting everywhere in the company“.

Teo also stated that he has filed a complaint to the United Nations Human Rights Council about the Singapore Government for persecuting and blacklisting him. He also claimed that he could have been poisoned by the Singapore Government in his complaint.

Further, Angelina will tomorrow be carrying a kavadi at Sri Perumal Temple, Desker Road and she invites all members of the public to turn up to show solidarity with her. Her legal team from M Ravi’s practice will also be there to witness her religious observances.

  • Lawyer M Ravi To Contest As An Independent In Ang Mo Kio

Lawyer M Ravi To Contest As An Independent In Ang Mo Kio

Lawyer M Ravi today (Feb 2) declared in a hastily-called press conference his intention to contest the next General Election as an independent candidate in Ang Mo Kio constituency.

Sending the media the invitation roughly three hours before the press conference started yesterday afternoon at The Fullerton Bay Hotel, he spent nearly an hour unleashing a tirade against the Government for not treating Singaporeans with due respect and not putting their interests above those of foreigners.

His electoral campaign, he said, will focus on seeing Singaporeans “being put first”. He also brought up a range of issues he wants to tackle should he be elected. For example, he called for the four official languages here — Malay, English, Mandarin and Tamil — to be made compulsory in school curriculum to “promote equality in the languages”.

The lawyer, who has taken on a number of cases involving government leaders, including the recent defamation suit by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong against blogger Roy Ngerng, said he chose to run in Mr Lee’s constituency because he (Mr Ravi) has a quarter of his relatives living there. He said he has not firmed up plans on who will run with him in the six-member Group Representation Constituency. Mr Ravi also said he aspires to become the Prime Minister one day. He claimed that he had set aside S$1 million for his campaign and said more details of his manifesto will be announced on Friday.

  • James Raj Arokiasamy aka the Messiah Pleads Guilty To 36 Charges Of Computer Misuse

James Raj Arokiasamy aka the Messiah Pleads Guilty To 36 Charges Of Computer Misuse

Hacker James Raj Arokiasamy, who goes by the moniker “Messiah”, has pleaded guilty to 39 charges of computer misuse for hacking into the web servers of Fuji Xerox, a fan site of popstar Sun Ho and government-related websites in 2013.

The 36-year-old had faced a total of 162 charges, of which 39 computer misuse charges and one charge for drug consumption were proceeded with. The remaining 121 charges will be taken into consideration for his sentencing. Deputy presiding judge S. Jennifer Marie adjourned sentencing to next Friday (Jan 30).

The prosecution, which described James Raj’s offences as “the largest, most prolific cyberattacks … against IT systems in Singapore”, asked for five to six years’ imprisonment, while defence lawyer M Ravi sought a jail term of four years.

Today, a district court heard that James Raj performed a series of seven high-profile cyberattacks between March and November 2013, six of which were committed within a span of two months.

On Oct 17, 2013, he defaced a web page of the People’s Action Party Community Foundation (PCF) with a hooded figure accompanied by the word “HACKED”.

His other actions included illegally accessing and modifying content on servers of the Ang Mo Kio Town Council’s website, The Straits Times blogs, a fan site for popstar Sun Ho, who is also the wife of City Harvest Church’s founder Kong Hee, and Fuji Xerox. The Fuji Xerox hack attack compromised a server containing confidential data belonging to 650 of Standard Chartered Bank’s clients.

The attacks had stirred public anxiety, with government agencies raising vigilance after James Raj published an online video threatening that infamous hacker group “Anonymous”, which he claimed to be part of, would “go to war” with the Singapore Government.

Affected organisations spent about S$1.36 million to repair their computer systems, the court heard.

Deputy Public Prosecutor G Kannan said James Raj was a serial offender whose acts warranted a sufficiently severe sentence to deter re-offending.

“The offences involved a significant degree of premeditation and were committed in a highly sophisticated manner … It was easy and will remain easy for him (to do it again),” said
    Mr Kannan.

Defence lawyer M Ravi contended that the acts were “highly amateurish” and had not resulted in any physical damage or theft of intellectual property.

“(James Raj’s) acts helped to identify weaknesses in the networks which could have, in time, been destroyed by people with far more malicious intent,” Mr Ravi added.
