‘My Name Is Noordin But I Am Not Muslim’

GEORGE TOWN: No thanks to an old error in his identity card, 34-year-old Johann Lim Noordin has been forced to put off plans to marry his girlfriend and buy property.

And those are just two of the problems he faces, all because his name sounds Muslim although he is not.

Lim was born to Buddhist parents in Penang and has never changed his religion. But on his MyKad, he is Johann Lim Noordin bin Billy Noordin and his religion is given as “Islam”.

The errors were made when he applied for his MyKad at the age of 12 and he has had to live with them since.

His problem first came under the media spotlight three years ago, but Lim said even that failed to help him resolve his problem.

“I am not getting any younger,” he said in an interview with FMT. “Why should I have to go through so many obstacles to get my IC fixed? It should have been done easily.

“No religious department in the country has any record of my being a Muslim. I have signed a statutory declaration proclaiming I am not Muslim. Why am I now told to go to the shariah court when I am not a Muslim?

“My constitutional rights have been violated. No one dares to do anything to help. All they do is keep telling me to go to the shariah court.”

Lim said his father was never a Muslim.

He said an oral complaint was immediately made at the NRD when he received his MyKad in 1994.

“When I first received my IC when I was 12, the family wanted it changed immediately,” he said. “But the department required both parents to give consent and my father at the time was living and working overseas. So we thought we would get to it when he came back.”

Lim’s father, Billy Noordin, 64, works with drug enforcement agencies in the United States and Saudi Arabia. He is of Chinese and Indian descent.

His mother, Lim Jee Yew, 65, is Chinese and a housewife in Penang.

When he was 21, Lim went to the NRD to upgrade to the new MyKad. He also asked the NRD to remove his Muslim status.

“The officer told me I could not use the name on my birth certificate. He told me to get a different name. At the time, I thought it ridiculous of the NRD to ask me to change my name; so I decided to ignore it.”

More recently, he misplaced his wallet and had to get a replacement MyKad. However, the NRD told him he would have to cancel his 2011 application to amend his name in order to get a replacement.

In desperate need of his MyKad, Lim agreed to the cancellation with a heavy heart. “So here I am, having to start all over again,” he said.

  • McDonald’s Singapore: Only Halal Cakes Allowed In Our Outlets

McDonald’s Singapore: Only Halal Cakes Allowed In Our Outlets

Due to the recent news of McDonalds Malaysia banning non-halal birthday cakes on their premises, McDonalds spokesman Faz Hussen has clarified on the issue to the local mainstream news.

Mr Hussen said that although McDonalds does not allow outside food on their premises, birthday cakes are an exception. However, birthday cakes brought into the premises have to been halal certified and this practice has been in place since McDonalds received their halal certification in 1992.

He added that as a halal certified food establishment, McDonalds Singapore has to strictly follow the regulations set out under the halal certification to ensure their food complies with halal requirements so that it is permissible for muslims in Singapore to patronize.

During the food preparation process, McDonalds Singapore takes precaution to ensure their food products are not mixed with non-halal certified products.

Indonesian Maid Abused My Grandma, Stole Her Money, Then Ran Away To Malaysia

    <Credits: Areefaz>

On Monday 2nd of January 2017 around 7.30am, my grandmom was pushed and beaten by her helper who have worked with her since July last year. Not only that, the helper twisted n broke my grandmom’s right ankle while grandmom tried to stop her from leaving th house. My grandmom is currently warded in the hospital due to th injuries and fractured leg. She suffers some bruises from the scuffle too.. All this happen while my aunt was out sending her daughter to school.

Before she left, she have also stolen my grandmom’s money approx $1.3k (supposingly to bank in that day) and rm300+. She also took my aunt’s Samsung Tab. The helper has left Singapore to Malaysia via Woodlands Custom on that very morning according to th Investigation Officer.

We have lodged a police report and got legal advice on this matter too. We are just waiting for the Investigation Officer to get back to us on the updates.. Since this is not a Murder or Drug case, Interpol will take sometime to handle this.

I would like to seek help from everyone here to make this post viral so the helper can be found in no time. For our family, we are totally fine if the helper wants to leave if she really want to but why does she need to beat up and broke my grandmom’s leg. It is just unfair for my grandmom who is already 86years old and less mobility..

We trusted and treated her just like our own family. My family members will give her extra allowance for her own expenses, additional of her salary. Bought for her lots of things and she got lots of rest thru out her working here. She will also took her nap too as and when my grandmom naps. So we are shocked when this happens.

We have no idea what triggers her too.. Coz if she wants to fled, she can do it th past mths while she was alone with my grandmom. We believe that she was influenced or taught by someone that crossed path her recently. But no one cares about it now. All we care now is to seek justice for my aged grandmom who is still in a trauma state.

Her details are as per below –

Name of Helper : Baiq Sulaemi

Dr. Ustaz Rozaimi Ramle: Jangan Salah Gunakan Hadith Untuk Lariskan Perniagaan

    Beringatlah.

  • E-cigarette regulation good news for vapers

E-cigarette regulation good news for vapers

PETALING JAYA, Jan 3 — The Cabinet’s decision to entrust three ministries to regulate the use of electronic cigarettes and vaping is the answer vape aficionados nationwide were looking forward to.

Vape Operators Association of Penang president Muhammad Hafidz Adnan, however, said there were suggestions the authorities could consider before finalizing the rules and regulations.

He proposed electronic cigarettes be sold in stores registered with the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry to ensure the devices’ were not compromised.

“With this announcement, it is our hope the ministries would curb the sale of electronic cigarettes online as it would be tricky to regulate. Safety of vapers comes into play here and sales should only be allowed via licensed stores,” he said in a statement.

He said the association was looking forward to work with state executive councillor for health Dr Afif Bahardin and the local government in obtaining business licences for vape shops in Penang.

“This engagement is much needed to allow the association become a communication platform between vape shop operators and local authorities,” he said.

Malaysian E-Vaporisers and Tobacco Alternative Association president Rizani Zakaria called on the government to speed up the issuance of business licences for vape operators as it had been a long waiting game for industry players.

“Our long-awaited request is finally answered. We hope they speed up giving licenses to operators to conduct business with an easy mind,” he said.

Rizani said all five states — Penang, Kedah, Johor, Kelantan and Terengganu — which imposed a ban on vape should consider lifting the prohibition to grant opportunities for shop operators who have been in the business for years.

“Most traders are experienced and conduct their businesses in accordance to the rules. The relevant state authorities should perhaps consider giving them a chance to operate once the new legislations were in place,” he said.

Malaysian Organisation for Vape Entity (Move) secretary Syamsul Reza Mohd Mokhtar said the decision put Malaysia on the map as one of the first few countries to regulate the vape industry.

“We will be known as the one of the pioneers and this will definitely get a cheer and applause from vapers around the world,” he said.

He said the much-anticipated decision would convince vapers to swap their tobacco cigarettes for electronic cigarettes instead, and subsequently boost the local vape industry.

On Wednesday, the Cabinet tasked the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry with regulating and enforcing safety standards for electronic cigarette devices and batteries and vaping devices under the Consumer Protection Act 1999 (Act 599).

It would also regulate and enforce the marking and labelling of electronic cigarette devices and nicotine-free liquid and vapes through the various Trade Descriptions Acts.

Under the new act, the licensing, production, distribution including import, export and sale of electronic cigarette devices, nicotine-free liquid and vapes would be monitored by the ministry.

The Health Ministry would regulate the sale of e-liquid containing nicotine under the Poisons Act 1952 and Sale of Drugs Act 1952, which only permit licensed pharmacies and registered medical practitioners to sell preparations containing nicotine for medical treatment.

The Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry, through the Department of Standards Malaysia, would develop standards for e-cigarettes batteries and devices and the packaging of nicotine-free, e-liquid and vapes under the Standards of Malaysia Act 1996.

Following the decision, the Health Ministry will draft a new law to replace the Tobacco Control 2004 Regulations, while the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry would draft a new law relating to the control of electronic cigarettes and vaping within the next two years.
