Singaporean Couple’s Car Stolen In Johor

A routine trip to Johor turned into a nightmare for a Singaporean couple after their car was stolen.

Mr Tengku Kamarudin Abdullah, 63, and wife Madam Fauziah Mohamed Ali, 59, were having lunch at a friend’s home in Skudai on Sept 18 when the incident occurred. They had just finished shopping in Johor Baru.

Mr Kamarudin, a taxi driver, had parked their silver Toyota Mark X two units away from their friend’s house when they arrived at around 1.30pm. When the couple were about to leave two hours later, the car was gone.

Mr Kamarudin told The New Paper: “We didn’t even hear anything. We only stepped out of my friend’s house and realised the vehicle wasn’t there.”

Their Toyota has a standard remote locking system. The couple lost all their groceries and a library book Madam Fauziah had left in the car, but no other valuables were lost.

She said: “We never leave our valuables in the car. I had my passport stolen from a car once, 15 years ago, and from then we always keep our valuables with us.”

Mr Kamarudin said that the car belongs to his eldest daughter and son-in-law.The couple filed a report with Malaysian police immediately and with Singapore police the next day.

Their eldest daughter, Madam Tengku Suhailah Tengku Kamarudin, 34, told TNP that they bought the second-hand car only last December.

“My husband travels a lot for his job, so my parents use the car more often,” she said.

She added that her parents would drive to Johor once or twice a month to do their grocery shopping. She said they had no plans to get a new car.

Car thefts are becoming a common occurrence in Malaysia, and Singaporeans have fallen victim several times.

Malaysian newspaper The Star reported last month that about 138 vehicles are stolen in Malaysia every day.

Housewife Nur Suliana, 28, had her black Honda City stolen while she was doing her grocery shopping at Perling Mall in Johor Baru.

  • Data Page Missing From Dead Man’s Passport

Data Page Missing From Dead Man’s Passport

The family of a national softball player who died in an accident in Malaysia last week suspect that a page in his passport with key personal information might have been stolen. They worry that it might be used for unlawful purposes.

Leonard Sim, 26, who represented Singapore in softball at the SEA Games in 2007 and 2011, died in an accident on the North-South Expressway near Kluang in the early hours of Sept 13. He had been riding a motorcycle on his way to Singapore from Penang.

His father Jack Sim, 62, who is in between jobs and was previously a manager, yesterday showed The Straits Times his son’s passport, which had the first page with information that is scanned at immigration checkpoints cleanly cut out.

He said: “We are concerned that his biometric data is used for terrorism and unlawful purposes.”

The younger Mr Sim, a softball coach, was travelling with his friend and fellow motorcyclist Lee Ren Yuan, 24, when the accident took place at around 3.45am.

Mr Lee, a sales executive, told The Straits Times that Mr Sim was travelling behind him and the road ahead was clear. But Mr Lee later felt “a huge impact from behind”. He rolled onto the ground and felt a car going past him.

After he picked himself up, he found his friend lying face down and breathing heavily.

Mr Lee said he looked around for a passer-by to call an ambulance. After he found someone, he went back to check on his friend, and found him still gasping for breath.

Mr Lee then looked around for his phone, and found it smashed up. He went back to check on his friend and but could not hear any breathing from him.

He went around looking for people to borrow a phone to call his friends and Mr Sim’s family. He continued to check on Mr Sim intermittently, and noticed on one occasion that his friend was lying face-up but did not think too much of it then.

After walking a few metres further away from Mr Sim, however, he noticed a red passport on the ground and picked it up.

The police arrived later and asked to see Mr Sim’s passport. Mr Lee took out a passport and checked to see if it was Mr Sim’s. It was only then that he realised the first page of Mr Sim’s passport was missing.

Mr Jack Sim said he has made a report to Malaysian and Singapore police about the matter.

  • RM50 Dikenakan Bagi Kad Bayaran Jalan Raya Kenderaan Singapura?

RM50 Dikenakan Bagi Kad Bayaran Jalan Raya Kenderaan Singapura?

Tambahnya lagi seperti ditukil The Star, Singapura sendiri mengenakan bayaran S$10 (RM30) setiap tahun bagi kad Autopass.

  • Woman Loses Singaporean Husband And Father In Motorbike Accident

Woman Loses Singaporean Husband And Father In Motorbike Accident

Every year, without fail, her family would balik kampung (Malay for return home) to spend Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Hari Raya Haji with her parents.

Madam Noraini Hassan, 35, and her family reached her parents’ home at Kampung Seri Lalang near Kluang, Johor, safely last Sunday, the eve of Hari Raya Haji.

But around 12.40am on Monday, fate dealt the Malaysian woman a devastating double blow.

The two men dearest to her – her Singaporean husband of 10 years and her father – were cruelly snatched away in a fatal road accident.

Her father, Mr Mohamed Hassan Ali, 65, was riding with her husband, Mr Noraripen Surni, 48, on his motorcycle when it collided with another motorcycle ridden by Mr Muhammad Hafiz Ghazali, 21.

Mr Muhammad Ekmal Yussry Md Yassin, who was riding behind Mr Hafiz, could not brake in time and his motorcycle crashed into the other two bikes.

Mr Noraripen and Mr Hafiz were killed on the spot.

Mr Hassan died in hospital after he was taken there by a neighbour who was riding behind them when the accident occurred.

Mr Ekmal was also taken to hospital with injuries. His condition is not known.

Madam Noraini, who works as an admin officer in Johor Baru, told The New Paper in Malay yesterday: “I was devastated when I found out that my husband and father were involved in an accident.”

She said they were returning home after having drinks with other villagers at a coffee shop nearby.

The accident occurred about a kilometre from her parents’ house.

    PHONE CALL

When a neighbour went to the house to tell her about the accident, she immediately called her husband on his mobile phone, but a man who identified himself as a doctor answered and told her to go to the accident scene.

Madam Noraini went there with her two children, Norqiestina, nine, and Izzul Zikri, four.

On the way, she kept hoping that her husband and father were still alive, and tried to maintain her composure for the sake of her children.

“In the car, my neighbour told me to take deep breaths to calm down,” she said.

When she reached the scene, her husband’s body was already in an ambulance.

“My heart broke into pieces when I saw their bodies, especially when my daughter started crying.”

Madam Noraini said her neighbour later said that “when she told me about the accident, she already knew my husband was gone but could not bear to tell me the news”.

Her father and husband were buried at the Muslim cemetery in Kampung Seri Lalang on Monday afternoon.

During the burial ceremony, her son asked her: “Why is ayah (Malay for dad) being put in the hole?”

“It pained me to explain to him what happened. I told him, ‘You’ll see him again in heaven, God willing,’” said Madam Noraini.

“My husband was a truly wonderful, amazing man. There will never be another one like him.

“I met him through a mutual friend, and we became friends. When I introduced him to my father, he was immediately taken with him. My father was the one who suggested that we got married.

“I fell in love with my husband because of what a great person he was. He was a man of few words, very quiet, but he’s one of the best people I know.

“He would always take time off to spend time with us as a family. Every Hari Raya, he would take our family to balik kampung.”

Mr Noraripen had worked in a Japanese food factory at Senoko Road for close to 20 years. He moved to live in JB after their marriage 10 years ago, and would commute to and from work daily.

He was the youngest of five siblings. They grew up in Singapore, but, like him, two of them also moved to JB, and another to Kuala Lumpur.

His siblings and mother attended his funeral.

    DEVASTATED

His sister, Madam Norizah Surni, told TNP that she last saw him alive at her house in JB last Saturday.

The 53-year-old housewife received a call from her sister-in-law at 1.04am on Monday to tell her that Mr Noraripen had met with an accident.

The call left her fearing the worst, and she was devastated when Madam Noraini later confirmed her brother had died.

“I was upset that I would never see him again, no more seeing him every week at my house,” said Madam Norizah.

“I lost one of the most important people in my life. This was my brother. He was the one I always talked to whenever I faced any problems. I told him everything.”
