Singaporean Family Detained 14 Days For Verbally Abusing Malaysian Immigration Officer

Singaporean family has been arrested and detained for 14 days for a probe into their alleged verbal abuse against an Immigration Department officer from Malaysia during a border inspection.

Johor Immigration Department Datuk Rohaizi Bahari said the two-week remand of the Singaporean trio was to facilitate the investigations into the incident last week.

“It is an offence to hurl abuse at my men who are just following the procedures during checks,” he was quoted saying by local daily The Star.

“So far our investigation also showed that the officer did not ask for any bribe as alleged by the suspects,” he added.

Rohaizi said individuals dissatisfied with the officers under him could file a direct complaint to him.

According to The Star, the arrest was carried out after the Singaporeans refused to lower the back window of their Singapore-bound car with tinted windows for inspection at the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex.

The trio were reportedly a businesswoman in her 40s and her children aged 18 and 19 respectively.

In the Friday afternoon incident, the woman was said to have verbally abused the immigration officer carrying out the inspection, while one of the trio purportedly gave a middle finger gesture.

The investigation of the trio is under Section 56(1)(g) of the Immigration Act, where the penalty is a maximum RM10,000 fine or a maximum jail term if five years or both.

  • Malaysian Fireman Responds To Car Crash, Finds Own Family Dead In Car Accident

Malaysian Fireman Responds To Car Crash, Finds Own Family Dead In Car Accident

A Malaysian auxiliary fireman was shocked to find out that the dead accident victims he was helping to remove from a wrecked car were his father, twin brother and two relatives.

Azlan Mustapha almost collapsed at the scene when he checked the identification card and discovered the horrific truth, and had to be consoled by his colleagues.

The four were killed in a freak accident after a three-tonne lorry went out of control and rammed their car in Tepoh in Terengganu on Thursday.

They were identified as Mustapha Abdullah, 56, his 32-year-old son Azman Mustapha, and two relatives, Mohd Sabri Ngah, 48, and Alif Ibrahim, 26.

State Fire and Rescue Department operations management chief Zulkhairul Mohamed Razilah said the 12.40am accident took place when a lorry rammed the car, which was going in the opposite direction.

“The Fire and Rescue Department, together with some volunteer firemen, took some 30 minutes to extricate the deceased from the wrecked Proton Saga.

“The victims were all pronounced dead at the scene by the paramedics,” he said.

Zulkhairul said the lorry driver escaped without any injuries but had been detained at the Kuala Terengganu district police headquarters to assist in investigations.

Speaking to reporters at the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital in Kuala Terengganu, Azlan said that he was still in shock and disbelief.

“I never even thought that such a day would come. My father, twin brother and our relatives often go out for supper and they were returning from supper when the tragedy happened,” he said.

  • Curi Sebab Nak Masak Rendang

    Curi Sebab Nak Masak Rendang

Dia berkata, dia mencuri kerana terdesak.

    ‘Saya nak buat rendang…’

“Memang masa buat tu saya tak fikir apa.

“Macam pakaian tu, saya teringin sangat nak rasa.

  • Walid J. Abdullah: It Is Not Easy Being A Mufti, But It Is Always Easier To Criticize One

Walid J. Abdullah: It Is Not Easy Being A Mufti, But It Is Always Easier To Criticize One

In the course of my research, i had the privilege of interviewing many religious scholars (ulama) in the region. The one that left the most lasting impression on me was the Mufti of the Federal Territories, Malaysia, Dr Zulkifli Al-Bakri.

As i entered his office, he was just folding his prayer mat as he had just completed his supererogatory prayers (the Duha prayer, it is called).
He welcomed me and really honoured me as a guest. He sidestepped questions on other scholars, even as i pressed him on it, and kept saying ‘I can’t comment on others. I just busy myself with my own affairs.’ His humility was apparent throughout. At the end, when i told him that my in-laws were huge fans of his, he looked down, almost embarrassed, reluctant to acknowledge the praise, and merely said ‘All thanks to God’. Before i left, he made a prayer for my success. (His demeanour, personality, humility and character reminds me of our own Mufti, Dr Fatris Bakaram.)

For me, one does not have to agree with everything any Mufti says, and one can even question particular fatwas. But the manner in which Dr Zul has been slammed for his so-called ‘ridiculous’, ‘regressive’, ‘back to the stone age’ edict, was simply uncalled for. Mostly, by people who did not even read the fatwa, and who just read the ever-so-reliable newspaper headlines!

Speaking of which, i notice that our newspapers always jump on opportunities to portray the ulama in neighbouring countries as problematic. We as readers, must always be more discerning. Believing sensationalist headlines hook, line and sinker reflects our intellectual capacity, or lack thereof, more than anything else.

It is fascinating that one who considers himself/herself ‘progressive’ has no qualms attacking the dignity of others, over a disagreement. How enlightened, indeed!
