MH370 Search: Reunion Islander Picks Up Water Bottle From Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 4 — A local lawyer on the French island of Reunion found two mineral water bottles from Malaysia among debris from the Indian Ocean washed ashore amid an ongoing search for the clues to the Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 that went missing over a year ago.

In an interview with Australian daily Herald Sun, Philippe Creissen said he found three mineral water bottles while walking along the Bois Rouge beach; two of them bore made in Malaysia labels while the third was from Taiwan.

“I walk along this beach all the time and 99 per cent of the debris that is here comes from Reunion,” Creissen was quoted as saying in the Melbourne-based publication.

The foreign-made mineral water bottles caught his eye, more so following the discovery of an airline wing part that has been confirmed to be from a Boeing 777, the same model plane as MH370.

The plane carrying 239 people on board from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing disappeared off the radar on March 8, 2013, believed somewhere over the Indian Ocean; over 130 of the passengers were China nationals.

Creissen said he handed the bottles to the police, and was later told they had been passed to a Malaysian investigation team on the island.

The islander had snapped pictures of the bottles which he posted on Twitter account on Sunday which showed two common Malaysian bottled water brands — “Cactus Mineral Water” and “Life Pure Distilled Drinking Water”.

Questions have been raised over whether those debris found came from MH370 that went missing March 8, last year following the discovery of a wing piece of a plane on the French island of Réunion in the Indian Ocean last week.

Despite MH370 being the only Boeing 777 to be lost in the Indian Ocean, authorities have not confirmed the debris’ link to the missing aircraft.

  • Negligence Suit Over Missing MH370 Settled Out Of Court

Negligence Suit Over Missing MH370 Settled Out Of Court

A negligence suit filed by two children of a passenger on board Malaysia Airlines (MAS) flight MH370 which disappeared on March 8 last year has been settled out of court.

The young plaintiffs, who filed the action through their mother, Ng Pearl Ming, had withdrawn the lawsuit, said Senior Federal Counsel Shahrin Saiful Nizam.

“The suit was struck out following a notice of discontinuance filed by the plaintiff’s lawyer,” he told reporters after emerging from the chambers of High Court judge Rosnaini Saub.

Shahrin said the family would not be allowed a file fresh suit, and that the judge had not ordered any costs.

Meanwhile, lawyer Dr Arunan Selvaraj, who represented the boys, said the matter had come an amicable settlement after the judge spoke with the mother, Ng.

“Having considered her rights and legal position, she has decided to accept the court compensation and move on with her life,” he said.

The terms of settlement are confidential.

The plaintiffs are the next-of-kin of passenger Jee Jing Hang. They filed the suit through legal firm Messrs Rusmah Arunan & Associates on November 1 at the Kuala Lumpur High Court registry.

MAS, the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA), the Immigration Department and the Royal Malaysian Air Force were named as defendants in the suit for negligence, and in the case of MAS, breach of contract.

In their statement of claim, the boys said their father, who was 41, had entered into an agreement with MAS for safe passage to Beijing when he paid the airfare.

They said MAS breached the agreement when the plane, which departed from Kuala Lumpur, failed to land safely in Beijing on March 8.

The Boeing-777 left the Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 12.41am on March 8 and disappeared from civilian radar about an hour later while over the South China Sea.

But the plane was declared lost in an accident on January 29 by DCA director-general Datuk Azharuddin Abdul Rahman, and the 239 passengers and crew on board deemed dead.

Lawyers well-versed in aviation law said then that Putrajaya’s declaration was an admission of liability and the airline had no defence, should suits be filed against it.

Press reports said the MAS management had offered to pay US$50,000 (RM180,000), which would be deducted from the final compensation.

According to the Montreal Convention – a multilateral treaty that governs international transportation of passengers and cargo – a maximum of US$175,000 can be offered in compensation by airlines.

Of the total number of passengers, 152 were Chinese citizens, including a group of 19 artists with six family members and four staff returning from a calligraphy exhibition of their work in Kuala Lumpur.

Thirty-eight passengers were Malaysians while the rest were from 13 other countries.

The aircraft has yet to be found, even after an extensive search in the southern Indian Ocean where it was believed to have gone down after veering off course. – June 2, 2015.

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 22 ― An Australian woman alleging that she had been sexually assaulted by a Malaysia Airlines steward on an intercontinental flight has gone public about her ordeal.

Known only as Laura, the 26-year-old alleged that the chief steward on Malaysia Airlines flight MH20 from Kuala Lumpur to Paris on August 4 had attacked her during which she had been paralysed by fear, according to a report on News.com.au.

“I couldn’t stop it, I just froze, I was just scared,” the news site quoted her as saying in a interview expected to be to be aired on Australian television this weekend.

“I keep saying ‘why didn’t I scream, why didn’t I shout, why didn’t I stop it? I’m a strong person because I can, I can do that, I know I can, but when I was in the moment I couldn’t. I felt so scared, so petrified,” she was further quoted as saying.

Laura was reported to have recorded an exchange mid-flight in which a woman is heard crying and saying: “I’m so scared, I just want to get off this plane … I don’t want to see you, go away, you give me the creeps, you dirty old man.”

In a statement last week, Malaysia Airlines confirmed the allegations had been made were made and that a member of staff had been detained by French police.

“We will naturally assist the French authorities as they conduct their investigation and would stress that the safety, comfort and well-being of our passengers is always our highest priority,” it said.

While the airline gave no other details about the member of staff arrested, the Australian news site said the chief steward is married with children remains in the custody of French police after “making admissions.”

The story comes at a time when the struggling airline is on its knees after successive years of losses and is now being taken over by the government.

The national carrier has also been in the spotlight for two tragedies this year.

In March, Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing carrying 239 people on board disappeared from the skies in what is believed to be among the greatest mysteries of modern aviation. The jetliner remains missing and everyone on board is believed to be dead.

Mid-July, Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur was shot down over Ukrainian airspace, killing all 283 people on board.-tmmOnline

  • Malaysian Airlines Plane MH17 Shot Down By BUK Missile, Crashes In Ukraine

Kiev, Ukraine:  A Ukrainian official said a passenger plane carrying 295 people was shot down on Thursday over a town in the east of the country, and Malaysian Airlines tweeted that it lost contact with one of its flights over Ukrainian airspace.

Anton Gerashenko, an adviser to Ukraine’s interior minister, said on his Facebook page the plane was flying at an altitude of 10,000 meters (33,000 feet) when it was hit by a missile fired from a Buk launcher. A similar launcher was seen by Associated Press journalists near the eastern Ukrainian town of Snizhne earlier Thursday. The Buk missile system can fire missiles up to an altitude of 22,000 meters (72,000 feet).

Malaysia Airlines said on its Twitter feed that it “has lost contact of MH17 from Amsterdam. The last known position was over Ukrainian airspace. More details to follow.”

The Ukrainian interior ministry adviser reportedly said 280 passengers, 15 crew were dead in the crash.

The Boeing passenger liner came down close to town of Shaktarsk in the rebellion-wracked region of Donetsk after disappearing from the radar and teams from the emergency services were trying to reach the scene, an unnamed security source told Interfax-Ukraine news agency.

The region has seen severe fighting between Ukrainian forces and pro-Russia separatist rebels Donetsk People’s Republic in recent days.

On Wednesday evening, a Ukrainian fighter jet was shot down by an air-to-air missile from a Russian plane, Ukrainian authorities said Thursday, adding to what Kiev says is mounting evidence that Moscow is directly supporting the separatist insurgents in eastern Ukraine. Security Council spokesman Andrei Lysenko said the pilot of the Sukhoi-25 jet hit by the air-to-air missile was forced to bail after his jet was shot down.

Pro-Russia rebels Donetsk People’s Republic and their leader Igor Girkin , meanwhile, claimed responsibility for strikes on Wednesday on two Ukrainian Sukhoi-25 jets. The Ukrainian Defense Ministry said the second jet was hit by a portable surface-to-air missile, but added the pilot was unscathed and managed to land his plane safely.

Through his VK.com account, Russia’s version of Facebook, the self-proclaimed defense minister of the Donetsk People’s Republic, Igor Girkin — who goes by the nom de guerre Igor Strelkov — boasted about shooting down a plane.

“We did warn you — do not fly in our sky,” he wrote.

Thinking it was a Ukrainian transport plane, Strelkov added that “a plane has just been downed somewhere around Torez, it lays there behind the ‘Progress’ mine,” referring to the mining town of some 80,000 people.

“And here is the video proving another ‘bird’ falling down,” he continued. “The bird went down behind a slagheap, not in a residential district. So no peaceful people were injured,” Strelkov wrote, adding that there is also information about a Ukrainian military plane shot down.

    [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CtdMtrmSTA]

However, Strelkov deleted the post when he found out it was actually a commercial jetliner carrying 295 innocent people — not a military aircraft.

Moscow denies Western charges that is supporting the separatists or sowing unrest in its neighbor. The Russian Defense Ministry couldn’t be reached for comment Thursday about the Ukrainian jet and Russia’s foreign ministry didn’t respond to multiple requests for comment.

Earlier this week, Ukraine said a military transport plane was shot down Monday by a missile fired from Russian territory.

The rebels are known to possess portable anti-aircraft rocket launchers, but Ukrainian officials say that kind of weapon would have been unable to reach Monday’s plane at the altitude at which it was flying Monday. Aviation experts, however, have questioned whether the stricken transport plane was flying at the altitude Ukrainian officials had claimed.
