Nadia Nasuha Antara 108 Mahasiswa Kohort Terbesar Bidang Perubatan NTU

  • Walid J. Abdullah: It Is Not Easy Being A Mufti, But It Is Always Easier To Criticize One

Walid J. Abdullah: It Is Not Easy Being A Mufti, But It Is Always Easier To Criticize One

In the course of my research, i had the privilege of interviewing many religious scholars (ulama) in the region. The one that left the most lasting impression on me was the Mufti of the Federal Territories, Malaysia, Dr Zulkifli Al-Bakri.

As i entered his office, he was just folding his prayer mat as he had just completed his supererogatory prayers (the Duha prayer, it is called).
He welcomed me and really honoured me as a guest. He sidestepped questions on other scholars, even as i pressed him on it, and kept saying ‘I can’t comment on others. I just busy myself with my own affairs.’ His humility was apparent throughout. At the end, when i told him that my in-laws were huge fans of his, he looked down, almost embarrassed, reluctant to acknowledge the praise, and merely said ‘All thanks to God’. Before i left, he made a prayer for my success. (His demeanour, personality, humility and character reminds me of our own Mufti, Dr Fatris Bakaram.)

For me, one does not have to agree with everything any Mufti says, and one can even question particular fatwas. But the manner in which Dr Zul has been slammed for his so-called ‘ridiculous’, ‘regressive’, ‘back to the stone age’ edict, was simply uncalled for. Mostly, by people who did not even read the fatwa, and who just read the ever-so-reliable newspaper headlines!

Speaking of which, i notice that our newspapers always jump on opportunities to portray the ulama in neighbouring countries as problematic. We as readers, must always be more discerning. Believing sensationalist headlines hook, line and sinker reflects our intellectual capacity, or lack thereof, more than anything else.

It is fascinating that one who considers himself/herself ‘progressive’ has no qualms attacking the dignity of others, over a disagreement. How enlightened, indeed!

  • Singapore Rower Saiyidah Aisyah Advances To Quarter-Finals

Singapore Rower Saiyidah Aisyah Advances To Quarter-Finals

Faced with choppy waters she had never competed in before, Saiyidah Aisyah had to improvise, adapt and most of all, row like she had never done before.

The Singaporean was already the country’s first Olympic rower and the trailblazer continued her remarkable journey by reaching the quarter-finals of the women’s singles sculls at the Rio Games.

Her time of 8min 44.71sec might have been almost a minute slower than her personal best but the only number that mattered was three, the position she finished in heat 4 under the scorching sun at Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas in Copacabana.

It was good enough to see her join the heat winner, China’s Duan Jingli (8:18.57), and Swiss Jeanine Gmelin (8:28.10) in the quarter-finals where the top three from the six heats will square off on Tuesday.

Saiyidah, who dropped her hands in exhaustion and looked skywards after crossing the finishing line of the 2,000m race, said: “This was one of the toughest races of my life. The water was so choppy, especially at the halfway mark. I had to row using only one side to make sure I didn’t cross into the other lane on my left.”

The waters were so rough that she even had to think out of the box and use her spare socks to remove water from her craft – soaking up the water and squeezing it on the side – minutes before her race.

The sight of capsized Serbian men’s pair Milos Vasic and Nenad Bedik in a later race further illustrated the testing circumstances.

She clung to the last-minute words of encouragement from her Australian coach Alan Bennett, particularly in the final 500m when Chinese Taipei’s Huang Yi-ting was threatening to overtake her.

She said: “He told me I’ve come this far and there’s no reason why I can’t finish in the top three. I kept repeating that to myself throughout the race.”

The 2013 SEA Games champion is used to adversity. Her form dipped in 2014 and she moved to Sydney last year to train full time with faint hopes of qualifying for the Games.

The 28-year-old, who left her job as a Student Development Officer at Ngee Ann Polytechnic in August last year, even took to crowd-funding earlier this year to fund her training expenses after using up most of her life savings.

Flashing the widest of grins, she told The Sunday Times: “It’s been an amazing experience and I’m so proud to represent Singapore and I really hope this (her participation in the Olympics) will inspire others.”

She was equally pleased about beating the other two participants in her heat, Huang (8:51.74) and Kazak Svetlana Germanovich (9:34.15).

Saiyidah had lost to both women at April’s Asia and Oceania Continental Olympic Qualification Regatta but earned her Olympic spot after winning the B final.

She remains on track for her goal in Brazil, a top-24 ranking among 32 participants. She has progressed to the next round as the 16th fastest competitor.

The top three from the four quarter-finals will advance to the semi-final while the rest proceed to the C and D division alongside winners from the repechage stage to decide the rankings from 13-24th.

Such complex permutations will have to wait though. Sayidah had attended Friday’s opening ceremony and returned to the Games Village only at 1am. Her bus to the rowing venue left five hours later.

She said with a chuckle: “I’ll return to training tomorrow morning and get myself ready for the next race. But all I want to do now is go back and sleep.”

After a performance like that, it is a richly deserved nap. And chances are, the dreams would be especially sweet.

  • ‘Nabi’ Palsu Ini Minta Pengikutnya Bayar S$200 Untuk Masuk Syurga, Dicekup Polis

‘Nabi’ Palsu Ini Minta Pengikutnya Bayar S$200 Untuk Masuk Syurga, Dicekup Polis

  • 6 Terror Suspects Arrested For Plotting To Hit MBS With Rocket From Batam

6 Terror Suspects Arrested For Plotting To Hit MBS With Rocket From Batam

SINGAPORE — Indonesian authorities have arrested six terrorism suspects over an alleged plot to fire a rocket into Marina Bay from Batam, a distance of less than 30km, according to local media reports.

The suspects, aged 19 to 46, were arrested on Friday morning (Aug 5) by Special Detachment 88, Indonesia’s elite counter-terrorism squad. The group is said to have links to Bahrun Naim, the alleged mastermind behind the attacks in central Jakarta earlier this year.

Singapore’s Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said it is aware that plans were being made by the six terror suspects. “Our security agencies have been coordinating closely with the Indonesian authorities since the discovery of this attack plot, to monitor the activities of the group and to apprehend those involved,” it said in a statement.

Singaporean police and other agencies have been stepping up inland and border security measures, said MHA.

According to an online report by Batam Pos, the suspects were arrested at various locations across Batam, including the Mediterranean Housing Block FF1 Batam Centre, Complex Masyeba, Cluster Sakura Botania, Carina Park Complex, and the Komplek Taman Indah Batuaji.

“It is true that we are holding six people,” a senior police official, Boy Rafli Amar, was quoted saying by Batam Pos.

The report identified the six suspects as Gigih Rahmat Dewa, 31; Trio Syafrido, 46; Eka Saputra, 35; Tarmidzi, 21; Hadi Gusti Yanda, 20; and M Tegar Sucianto, 19. All of them work at a fabric factory except Trio, who is reportedly a bank executive. An Indonesian TV station identified Gigih as the ring leader.

One of Gigih’s neighbours said he got married four years ago and did not show signs of suspicious behaviour. “He rarely goes out, in fact, we don’t know anything about them. So far the couple has been good,” the neighbour was quoted saying by Batam Pos.

Bahrun Naim, an Indonesian militant, is well-known to security agencies. Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam said in March that Bahrun Naim was suspected of encouraging attacks in Singapore. He is said to be behind the bomb-and-gun assault at a Jakarta shopping plaza on Jan 14 that killed eight people, including four attackers, and injured more than 20 others.

Indonesian national police chief Badrodin Haiti has also named him as one of the region’s core leaders in the pro-Islamic State network
