International Islamic University Malaysia Student Named Best Overall Speaker At Cambridge University Women’s Open Debate

PETALING JAYA: International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) student Ameera Natasha Moore has been named best overall speaker in the recently concluded Cambridge University Women’s Debate Open.

In receiving the award, the third-year law student outranked debaters from renowned institutions including Oxford University, Durham University, Trinity College Dublin, University College London, Vienna University, Berlin University, St Andrews University, Warwick University, the London School of Economics and Tel Aviv University among others.

Ameera, 21, and her team-mate from IIUM, Sara Rahim, 19, were the highest ranked team in the tournament, also known as The Norton Rose Fulbright Cambridge Women’s Open, after accumulating the most speaker points in all four preliminary rounds.

However, IIUM bowed out in the four-way semi-finals knock-out round against Trinity College Dublin and two teams from Oxford University.

The ranking is just another cap in Ameera’s impressive international debate resume.

Ameera is also a two-time English as a Second Language (ESL) winner of the Australasian Intervarsity Debating Championship, the champion and overall best speaker of the Asian English Olympics Debate Tournament 2014, and an ESL semi-finalist of the prestigious World Universities Debating Championship 2014 held in India.

Apart from being crowned this year’s Malaysian Royal National Debating Champion, the Sekolah Seri Puteri alumna has also accumulated a long list of trophies from various local tournaments.

“I feel great. I definitely was not expecting (the ranking) as I knew the competition was tough! Yet at the same time, I feel satisfied because being one of the only Asian teams there and to dispel the myth that women can’t talk about sports or international relations, was an experience I’ll never forget,” Ameera told The Star Online.

“During the tournament, my team-mate Sarah and I were practically jumping when the motion ‘This House Believes that the US and Iran should form alliances to fight against the Islamic State’, was revealed as we had done extensive research on the issue.

When asked to share her most memorable experience during the competition, Ameera said: “To come out of that debate ranking first with our opponents, including Oxford, congratulating us and saying that it was very well deserved, meant so much. To know that even your opponents are happy for you, that’s something that words can’t describe.”

After graduation, Ameera looks forward to working closely with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in helping with the plight of women and children.

“It’s important for women to use debate as a platform to break down existing stereotypes. Especially where women’s and girls’ rights are undermined, debate can be used as the most effective tool for changing mindsets and questioning patriarchal attitudes at politics, work and at home,” added Sarah, a second year IIUM economics student from Afghanistan.

The competition, which was held in Cambridge University, United Kingdom, on Nov 23, saw 51 all-women teams from across the world taking part.

Although most participants debated under the banners of their universities and tertiary institutions, the competition was also open to composite teams made up from several institutions.

The tournament was held to encourage participation from women in the debating scene and to raise awareness of women’s issues.

  • Man Charged For Slapping Muslim Bollywood Actress For Wearing Short Dress During Filming

Man Charged For Slapping Muslim Bollywood Actress For Wearing Short Dress During Filming

MUMBAI (AFP) – A man has appeared in court after slapping a Bollywood actress for wearing a short dress during the filming of a reality television show, police said Tuesday.

The 24-year-old assaulted model and actress Gauhar Khan in Mumbai because “being a Muslim woman, she should not have worn such a short dress,” police quoted him as saying.

He was wrested away by security guards at the shooting of “India’s Raw Star”, hosted by Khan, in north Mumbai on Sunday and then arrested.

“The accused was produced in the court on Monday,” said assistant police inspector Sanjay Shinde at the Aarey Sub Police Station, without giving further details.

“Since it is a matter associated with Bollywood, a senior officer is also following the progress of the probe,” he told AFP.

Khan has appeared in several films and last year won “Big Boss”, India’s reality show equivalent to “Big Brother”.

Treatment of women in the country has been the subject of much media attention over the past two years after a student was gang-raped and killed in the capital New Delhi.

But people hoping for increased awareness of women’s rights would probably be sent “into the depths of despair” by the comments of the man who attacked Khan, the Mid Day newspaper said Tuesday.

  • Two Civil Servants Among Three Arrested In Malaysia For Suspected Links to IS

Two Civil Servants Among Three Arrested In Malaysia For Suspected Links to IS

KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysian police said today (Dec 2) that they have detained three men, including two civil servants, suspected of being linked to the militant Islamic State group.

The detentions bring the number of people held for suspected militant links to 43 this year.

National police chief Khalid Abu Bakar said the three were detained Nov 27 and 28 in operations in Kuala Lumpur and in northern Kedah state.

Mr Khalid said in a statement that a 36-year-old suspect had joined militant groups in Syria since Dec 28 last year and returned to Malaysia on April 8.

Another two, both civil servants in their 20s, were believed to have been channelling funds to several Malaysians who want to go to Syria to join the Islamic State terror group, he said.

The spread of the Islamic state ideology has worried Prime Minister Najib Razak, who recently warned that it can cause chaos and conflict in the country. He said the government would introduce a new anti-terrorism law next year to combat the security threat.

No details have been given on the new law, but officials said it may include preventive measures such as detention without trial. Critics have urged the government not to revive the Internal Security Act, which allowed indefinite detention without trial. It was abolished in 2012 as part of political reforms.

The government said they have identified 39 Malaysians fighting in Syria and Iraq, including five who had died. AP

  • Setiausaha Agung PKMS: Melayu Singapura Perlu Berjuang Berteraskan Kudrat Sendiri

Setiausaha Agung PKMS: Melayu Singapura Perlu Berjuang Berteraskan Kudrat Sendiri

Sektor awam paling ketara kerana dipelopori kaum bukan Melayu,” katanya.

Beliau berkata: ”Majikan mendakwa pengambilan pekerja dibuat berdasarkan sistem meritokrasi. Hakikatnya, sikap ‘pilih bulu’ seperti mengutamakan calon kaum Cina atau yang mempunyai asas bahasa Mandarin masih wujud walaupun selepas diminta diberi pertimbangan sewajarnya.”

Apabila ditanya sama ada benarkah dakwaan bahawa kepentingan dan nasib masyarakat Melayu di Singapura sering dipinggirkan, Jamal mendakwa menerusi media sosial, suara masyarakat Melayu terutama keluhan dan pendapat mereka semakin didengari.

    BH Interview With SG PKMS

Christian Cross Dropped From Official Real Madrid Badge To Appease Muslim Supporters In The UAE

Champions League holders Real Madrid have dropped the Christian cross on their official badge in what is reportedly a move to pacify Muslim supporters in the United Arab Emirates, a Spanish sports newspaper said.

According to daily Marca.com, images of the amended “Los Blancos” badge could be seen on credit cards issued by the National Bank of Abu Dhabi after Real Madrid president Florentino Perez announced on September 12 a three-year partnership with the leading UAE bank.

The cards, which also function as Real Madrid membership cards, feature the badge with the cross above the crown removed in order to avoid causing offence or discomfort among Muslim customers.

“I know that the local people experience every match in a special way and that our links with the UAE are constantly growing stronger,” Perez was quoted as saying.

“This agreement will help the club to keep conquering the hearts of followers in the United Arab Emirates.”

Real Madrid players Toni Kroos, Karim Benzema, Gareth Bale and Dani Carvajal were present at the announcement of the partnership.

The report added that the crest has not been altered outside the region. – December 1, 2014.
