Philadelphia Group Lobbies State Lawmakers Against Anti-Muslim Bias

HARRISBURG – Highlighting what they say is a national increase in anti-Muslim bias, triggered in part by the rhetoric of some Republican presidential candidates, about 50 amateur lobbyists affiliated with the Philadelphia chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations converged at the state capitol to pitch lawmakers on a range of social issues.

Armed with a talking-points memo and posters emblazoned with “I am a proud American Muslim” and “Islamophobia = Racism,” the members of the advocacy group fanned out for office visits with legislators and their staffs.

Some of the men wore beards and knitted skullcaps. Some of the women wore hijabs. They spoke about anti-Arab bigotry, the Syrian refugee crisis, the movement to have two major Muslim fast days recognized as school holidays in Philadelphia, three state Senate bills that would affect the price of in-state college tuition, eligibility for driver’s licenses, and employment opportunities for authorized and undocumented immigrants.

Three- and four-person teams visited the offices of Philadelphia-area lawmakers Louise Bishop, Lawrence Farnese Jr., Dominic Pileggi, Vincent Hughes, and others.

The group that visited Rep. Kevin Schreiber (D., York) included Abdallah Abououf, a pharmacy technician, of Hummelstown; his wife, Mona Elkony; and their infant son, Yusuf.

“Three months old and already a lobbyist?” Schreiber teased, drawing a laugh.

Schreiber turned serious when he noted that candid discussions with American Muslims exercising their democratic rights need to be part of any dialogue about a better society.

Jacob Bender, the first Jewish director of a CAIR affiliate, said the event, which was billed as “Muslim Capitol Day,” was designed to bring together a diverse coalition that included a rabbi, an imam, an ordained minister, civil rights organization leaders, and lawmakers to proclaim, “We will no longer allow the Muslim community and Islam to be stereotyped, marginalized, and vilified.”

Rabiya Khan, an activist from York, cited two instances of recent Republican candidate rhetoric that she said fanned the flames of bias: Donald Trump’s failure to correct the record when a person at a town-hall meeting prefaced a pejorative question about President Obama with the false statement that Obama is a Muslim; and Ben Carson’s statement that he personally could not support a Muslim for president.

Addressing the whole group at the end of the day, Rep. Jordan Harris, a Democrat, whose South and Southwest Philadelphia district has a large and growing Muslim population, said:

“The reality is this: Christian, Muslim, Jew, and Gentile, we all want the same thing. We want safe streets. We want schools that educate our children. . . . There is no place in this commonwealth for hatred of any kind. . . . We must call out racism every chance we get. If any of us are silent when we hear the jokes, when we see the legislation, we are all guilty. . . . Dr. King once said, ‘Our day begins to end when we begin to become silent on the things that matter.’ ”

  • Walid J. Abdullah: Give Peace A Chance – Non-Muslims Must Be Objective On Facts Of Palestine Issue

Walid J. Abdullah: Give Peace A Chance – Non-Muslims Must Be Objective On Facts Of Palestine Issue

    On the Palestinian question:

Yesterday i saw a video of a father hugging his deceased child. I must say that video broke my heart. I do not dare share it here because it is really not for the faint-hearted.

One wonders what more the Palestinians have to go through before the world starts to give a damn.

I hope non-Muslims understand why the Palestinian issue is so close to the hearts of many Muslims: not only is it because of the status of Palestine as a holy land in Islam (which admittedly is a factor nonetheless), it is also because we firmly believe it is the biggest injustice of the modern era. Study the issue with an open mind and heart and you will see that the issue is really not a complicated one: as Dr Norman Finkelstein asserts, the more knowledge one has of the matter, the more one realizes just how unambiguous the issue is.

The situation is made worse when one knows just how nice and hospitable the Palestinians are: anyone who has been to the place will attest to the warmth and hospitality of the Palestinians (both Muslim and Christian).

Yet, somehow this problem has persisted for decades. Yet, Netanyahu can lecture the world at the UN for not taking his country’s security seriously. Yet, in the US, president after president, and presidential candidate after candidate, go out of their way to prove to the electorate that they are a ‘friend of Israel’.

I believe in the intrinsic goodness of most humans, which is why i believe that most people, if given enough information about the facts, will sympathize with the Palestinians.

And i believe that one day, i will step into a Palestine that is free. And if i don’t, at least my children will. God-willing.

Aisha Alqadri: Thank You Damanhuri Abas For Speaking On The Tudung Issue

    Thumbs up to ‪#‎YourDamanhuri‬! ??????

A great speech at the rally, especially with regard to the tudung issue, in allowing the nurses to don the tudung as part of their uniform.

“If the Madam Speaker of Parliament and the Malay/Muslim female MPs of PAP are allowed to don the white tudung, why are they still not allowing the nurses to do so? Don’t Mdm Halimah, Dr Intan Azura and Mdm Rahayu look like nurses in their all white outfit and tudung???”

    A good one indeed!!!??????

    Why the double standard????

Mufti: Usaha Semua Pihak Perlu Bagi Raih Manfaat Penuh Sokongan Pemerintah

  • Singaporeans Should Stop Condoning Racist Practices Of Companies

Singaporeans Should Stop Condoning Racist Practices Of Companies

    Dear Rilek1Corner,

I saw your post on the SD Perfume. The first thing I thought to myself is that the company is really racist. This is obviously discrimination. They want to recruit because of someone’s race, not by someone’s ability to speak the language they require.

    Looking For Chinese Only

When will such companies learn? After 50 years we still see people judge others based on the colour of their skin. Yes, some may say the situation is better here than many other countries. My question is, so what? There is no place for racism. Those discriminated against suffer, The country as a whole suffer.

Even more grating are people who condone or try to justify these racist acts. You take a look at these people and their five-cens worth

    Abdul Malek Ishak

Does everyone have to be an MP or a politician to make things right? This complaining is not without merit. We are not starting a riot, merely asking that such companies are penalised for their unfair, discriminatory practices. What makes him think that Malays are not striving to provide for the family? That is why the lady enquired about the job in the first place.

    Mustapha Kamal

What does the attitude of parts of the Malay community got to do with this? Whether or not they are hardworking or lazy, this company will still not take them because “[they] are not Chinese”. This racism is there, regardless of how smart, intelligent, capable or beautiful that person is.

    Naqib Spec

And this takes the cake…the worst thing you can do when a fellow member of your community is facing racism is to condemn your own community. Does he think he is better than everyone else?

I am not a Malay ultra or even an Opposition supporter. But we cannot deny that racism exists and for us to overcome the problems, we need to acknowledge the problem and admonish those racist b******s…together as Singaporeans.
