Singapore To Launch First Trial Of Driverless Buses In Jurong West

Driverless buses may soon ply the roads of Singapore, under a new trial to test out such buses for commutes between Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and CleanTech Park, and possibly even to Pioneer MRT station.

The trial – the first in Singapore with driverless buses – will be conducted by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and NTU’s Energy Research Institute, under an agreement signed at the opening of the Singapore International Transport Congress and Exhibition on Wednesday (Oct 19).

The agreement follows a Request for Information exercise called by LTA in June last year on autonomous mobility concepts.

NTU is one of the first research institutions to have trialled a self-driving electric shuttle within the campus and CleanTech Park since 2013. It will now translate that know-how to develop two electric hybrid buses, equipping the vehicles with sensors and other capabilities to allow them to operate without a driver.

The 12m-long buses could potentially ferry people between NTU and CleanTech Park in the Jurong Innovation District, to even Pioneer MRT station in the future. The single-deck buses can accommodate about 80 passengers.

The vehicles will also be equipped to charge at a bus stop or depot.

“Current efforts worldwide have been focused on cars,” said Professor Lam Khin Yong, NTU Chief of Staff and Vice-President of Research. “So, this autonomous bus trial is the first of its kind in Singapore that will aim to improve road safety, reduce vehicle congestion, alleviate pollution and address manpower challenges.”

LTA also inked an agreement with NTU on a research study to improve preventive maintenance and rail reliability in Singapore.

A real-time condition monitoring tool that detects early signs of defects in traction power systems will be developed as part of the project. The technology will allow round the clock monitoring, without disrupting normal train operations.

  • NTU Peeping Tom Arrested, Caught With Videos Of Men Showering

NTU Peeping Tom Arrested, Caught With Videos Of Men Showering

As he hid in a shower cubicle, a peeping Tom, who allegedly filmed fellow male undergraduates bathing, frantically deleted the evidence from his iPhone.

But four quick-thinking students who caught him checked the Recently Deleted folder and found 66 incriminating video clips of men showering.

The incident started at about 1am yesterday when a resident of Block B in Hall 16, a hostel at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), noticed something amiss while he was showering.

The victim declined to speak to The New Paper but Mr Paul Lee, 22, the president of Hall 16, said: “My friend, the victim, spotted a mobile phone on top of his cubicle when bathing.

“He rushed out of the bathroom to call three other people, including me.”

The suspect locked himself in a cubicle, and the four waited outside it for about 10 minutes.

Mr Lee said: “My friend was very angry. He kept banging and shouting for him to come out.”

When the alleged voyeur came out, he tried to return to his room, but they blocked him. The suspect kept mum throughout the confrontation until they discovered the clips in his phone.

Mr Lee said: “He passed us his phone, unlocked it, and we saw the clips in the Recently Deleted album. They were videos of other men.”

    PLEAD

The suspect then pleaded with them not to report him, but they went ahead and reported it to campus security.

Mr Lee said: “It is unfortunate that my residents have been violated in such a perverse manner. Voyeurism is not tolerated.

“We hope the police and relevant authorities will take harsher actions against the people who commit such acts to serve as a stern warning and also deter potential offenders.”

The police said the 24-year-old man was arrested for possession of obscene materials.

    Investigations are ongoing.

An NTU spokesman said the university is assisting police in the investigation.

He said: “Security is the responsibility of all members of the university community.

“While the campus security team regularly patrols NTU’s halls and works closely with the police on security matters, students are advised to be vigilant and to look out for each other’s safety.”

TNP understands that another undergrad was caught in a similar case at the same hall on May 1.

Hall 16 resident Khairul Anwar, 23, said: “This is the second time it has happened and everyone just can’t believe it.

“I’ll take precautions when bathing, like check who is in the toilet, not taking too long to shower, and just look over my shoulders when showering.”

A resident who declined to be named and lives on the same level said: “I was thoroughly creeped out yesterday knowing there was a chance that I was in one of those 66 videos.”

  • Singapore Researchers’ Papers Retracted, NTU Professor Fired Over Falsified Data

Singapore Researchers’ Papers Retracted, NTU Professor Fired Over Falsified Data

About seven months after either retracting, withdrawing or correcting six research papers on myostatin, a protein produced in the human body, the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) has found evidence of falsified data in another three papers on the same subject and retracted them from two science journals.

The university has already sacked lead researcher Professor Ravi Kambadur, whose team included researchers from other institutions here. It has also started disciplinary proceedings against other researchers involved in the data falsification.

“He (Prof Kambadur) has been found wilfully negligent in the direction of the (research) group,” said the university on Wednesday (July 13).

News about the falsified data on the myostatin research first broke in December last year, after NTU started looking into “allegations of research malpractice” by the team of researchers from NTU, National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*Star).

Investigations threw up numerous instances of data alteration on the team’s research on myostatin, which controls muscle cell growth, as well as the presentation of data without adequate explanation on how they were derived. Following the probe, NTU revoked the doctorate of Dr Sudarsanreddy Lokireddy, who co-authored one of the retracted papers.

Earlier this week, the spotlight was turned on another three papers published between 2012 and 2014 in two journals, Molecular Endocrinology, and the Journal of Biological Chemistry.

NTU said: “Further investigations have revealed data falsifications in some of the in-vitro laboratory studies, which invalidate the results reported.”

Further disciplinary proceedings are underway with respect to other researchers, it added.

The nine papers highlighted had two names in common: Prof Kambadur and his wife Mridula Sharma, who was previously an associate professor at NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine.

In response to TODAY’s queries, NUS would say only that Dr Sharma was no longer an employee at the university.

Apart from the couple, the latest three papers shared these authors: Dr Sabeera Bonala, Dr Craig McFarlane and Dr Lokireddy.

According to the A*Star website, Dr McFarlane is currently a principal investigator at the Singapore Institute for Clinical Sciences. Dr Bonala runs her own start-up.

In response to media queries on Friday, NTU research integrity officer Tony Mayer said the university upholds the highest standards and international best practices in research.

“NTU has zero tolerance towards research misconduct and will not hesitate to take disciplinary action against anyone found to be lacking in research integrity.

“The university takes allegations of research misconduct seriously and investigates all reported allegations,” said Mr Mayer.

NTU ensures that researchers adhere to international practices by making them sign a declaration of “good research practice and ethical behaviour”.

Mr Mayer added: “Online training in research integrity is compulsory for all PhD students, post-doctoral fellows, research fellows and project officers.”

A*star declined to respond to media queries, saying that investigations were led by NTU.
