    Lee Hsien Loong: Singapore Must Build A Fair And Just Society

    The Republic must build a fair and just society which values every individual – regardless of their circumstances, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said in a speech at the 50th anniversary gala dinner of SPD on Thursday evening (Nov 27).

    SPD looks after the interests of those with physical disabilities and provides them social support and employment opportunities.

    Mr Lee said organisations like SPD serve as a reminder of what Singapore aspires to be as a society. “Our society should value every person, no matter who he is, what he was born with or without, because every person matters to us. And these are the basic principles that should guide us as we build a fair and just society,” he said.

    Prime Minister Lee said the Government has been shifting its approach to social support. For instance, it is developing new policies which offer more social support for elderly, low-income and disadvantaged groups.

    But even as the Government steps up its efforts, Mr Lee said groups like the SPD continue to play a critical role. Mr Lee noted how the organisation has aided 4,700 beneficiaries each year. This includes helping youths with disabilities pursue their studies and training people with disabilities for jobs.

    At the gala dinner, several organisations were honoured for their support of SPD. Asia Pacific Breweries Foundation, Loyang Tua Pek Kong, NatSteel Holdings, Presto Expat Motoring Services and San Wang Wu Ti Religious Society received the inaugural SPD Patron Awards, given to donors who contributed at least S$100,000 thrice or more.

    Microsoft Singapore, StarHub Ltd and Far East Organization received the SPD Distinguished Patron Awards for their donation of over S$1 million to SPD.

    Baey Yam Keng Is Not An Extrovert

    SINGAPORE: He has earned the nickname “Selfie King” because of his penchant for taking photos of himself at various events, from community runs to official visits overseas, and he has also been active on social media, posting frequently on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

    But Tampines GRC Member of Parliament (MP) Baey Yam Keng says he is actually an introvert, and doesn’t exactly lead an exciting life, unlike what his social media posts suggest.

    “I think I give people the impression that I’m a very active, sociable person… doing a lot of things. But I’m actually quite an introvert. Really! It’s just that I’m active online so there are certain posts people remember and they form certain impressions about me,” said Mr Baey with a chuckle, ahead of a recent rehearsal for his upcoming play Like Me. I Like, which marks the first time he’s starring in a stage production.

    Mr Baey revealed that there are quite a few similarities between him and the character he plays in Like Me. I Like, a Mandarin production staged by The ETCeteras, a theatre company he formed with his wife and a few friends back in 1996.

    In the theatre production, Mr Baey plays the shy artistic director Wen Yao, who is in love with his feisty colleague Zi Fen (played by radio veteran Foong Wai See).

    “Like Me. I Like is about two colleagues who have feelings for each other but do not dare to express it. The play centres on how our relationship develops,” said Mr Baey.

    “My character has a very active social media life, takes a lot of pictures, selfies and things like that. But in real life, he is a very shy person, an introvert who is unable to express himself clearly. It shows how people have different personae online.”

    However, unlike Wen Yao, whom he describes as a “quietly romantic” man, the father of three said he is not romantic at all. But his wife Lim Hai Yen, who is also the play’s writer and director, says otherwise.

    MR ROMANTIC

    Ms Lim revealed that her husband actually surprises her from time to time with flowers, though the flowers she receives are often ‘secondhand’ bouquets.

    “He does give me flowers, but it’s flowers that people give him, like when he attends some ceremony! I’m used to that. Some bouquets are very nice, even nicer than those he bought!” said Ms Lim, smiling sweetly, adding that she feels her husband is actually quite the romantic.

    “Every week, we try to spend a day together and every day we also find some time to talk. Sometimes he would ask me out for breakfast, or dinner. Even if it is at a hawker centre, it’s time spent together.

    “I think the most romantic thing he has done so far is to keep me company in theatre. Theatre is my passion. To be able to do it together with him is a different feeling,” said Ms Lim, pointing out that it hasn’t been easy for Mr Baey to find time to attend rehearsals while juggling his other responsibilities as an MP.

    “I think the good thing about him being in our play is that I also get to see a different side of him. As a father, an MP or a husband, he is a bit more serious. In theatre, I get to see a different side of him – one where he is more relaxed, more at play.”

    PLEASE ‘CLOSE ONE EYE

    Apart from commemorating the 40th anniversary of Hwa Chong Junior College, Like Me. I Like, also aims to raise funds for the Tampines North CCC Community Development and Welfare Fund and Hwa Chong Junior College Alumni Students Bursary Fund.

    Mr Baey, who met his wife while they were studying at Hwa Chong Junior College, said he found it “challenging” to star in a play for the first time, and that it is not exactly what he signed up for in the beginning.

    He explained that when he accepted the role, Like Me. I Like was to be a slightly expanded version of a simple 20-minute production about office romance with two characters, but it had since grown to become a two-hour show with a cast of six. In spite of all this, Mr Baey decided to take the role anyway, as he wanted to do his part for charity and help out his former school.

    “I’m usually behind the scenes as the producer. My wife is always the playwright and director. Hopefully people are more forgiving (of his acting) because it’s for charity and ‘close one eye’ (be more accepting of his flaws),” said Baey, flashing a boyish grin.

    Would he consider starring in more productions in the future?

    “This is just a one-off. I don’t think I have the talent to be an actor!”

    Like Me. I Like also stars Y.E.S. 93.3FM radio deejay Kenneth Chung Kun Hua, educator Kyris Ang, as well as teacher Jenny Chua, and opens Dec 4 at the SOTA Studio Theatre.

    Shisha Banned In SG From Today

    Shisha will be banned in the Republic from Friday (Nov 28) via the publication of the Prohibited Tobacco Regulations made under Section 15 of the Tobacco (Control of Advertisements and Sale) Act, announced the Ministry of Health (MOH) on Thursday.

    As a transitional measure, existing licensed tobacco importers and retailers who import or sell shisha tobacco will be allowed to continue importing and retailing shisha tobacco until July 31, 2016, MOH said. This is to allow them ample time to deplete their stock and restructure their businesses away from shisha.

    Those who flout the ban could be fined up to S$10,000 or jailed for up to six months or both. Repeat offenders face a fine of up to S$20,000 and up to 12 months’ jail or both.

    Members of the public who have information on the import, distribution, sale or offer for sale of shisha tobacco by unlicensed operators can tip-off authorities via the reporting lines 66842036 or 66842037.

    Parlimentary Secretary for MOH Associate Professor Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim had earlier said in Parliament that in view of health risks associated with shisha smoking, and to prevent the proliferation and entrenchment of shisha smoking in Singapore, a ban would be effected at end-November.

    Who’s To Blame For The CFO Revolving-Door At SMRT?

    In all my years of working experience in IT, as a project manager and now as CIO, I have found that the best CFOs I’ve ever worked with can be very difficult sometimes, but at the same time, they can also be the best ally you have. Let me explain.

    This is because when they are being difficult, they are doing it for a very good reason: they know how to ask all the right questions to make sure that the financial, compliance and legal bases are covered (where the company doesn’t have legal counsel to fall back on), and to make sure that all the operating costs and project costs are correctly planned and estimated.

    Once you can take your project proposal to the CFO and answer all their questions, they will be on your side when you take it to the CEO or steering committee for review and approval.

    Having the CFO on your side is a very strong endorsement to management that your project has been planned meticulously and covered from all angles. They are like your second set of “radar” in case anything can go wrong (and every project will have things you couldn’t anticipate for.)

    This rotating door at SMRT with their CFOs, with an ex-army CEO, really only shows how clueless the CEO and his masters are. This is a case of “people want to help you but you are just too incompetent to be helped.”

    Can you imagine, if we actually went to war with this clown in charge, someone who cannot work with his “senior officers”, what the outcome will be?

    Lee Kuan Yew Not The Visionary Leader Who Transformed Singapore

    Dear Professor Tan,

    I refer to the 5 Jun 2013 Straits Times report of your speech on the occasion of the conference of Doctor of Laws to Mr Lee Kuan Yew by NUS [1].

    Mr Lee wasn’t the visionary leader who brought success to the nation. Neither was he the man of imagination who pursued the unconventional. Instead, he pushed for import substitution, the conventional policy of developing nations then that eventually proved inferior to the less conventional policy of export industrialisation proposed by Dr Winsemius [2]. Luckily for us Mr Lee’s plans were scuttled with our expulsion from Malaysia and in the end; it was Dr Winsemius’ export industrialisation plans that ultimately brought success to our nation [2]. The qualities crucial to Singapore’s past success and big picture perspectives can thus be found in Dr Winsemius, not Mr Lee.

    Mr Lee did not lead Singapore from Third World to First for Singapore was already Upper Middle Income status according to World Bank’s classification of our 1960 per capita GNP [3]. At most, Singapore went from Next to First World to First World, led not by Mr Lee but by Dr Winsemius who was the leader behind Mr Lee.

    Mr Lee is thus not the global visionary you claim he is since the most important achievements associated with him actually belong to others. He may not be the best candidate to inspire the next generation for that might mean inspiring them to lock up opponents without trial, get more credit than they deserve and not fight for Singapore when Singapore is being invaded.

    All sense of hope and collective purpose is lost in Mr Lee’s leadership when he makes statements like these:
    • If Aljunied decides to go that way, well Aljunied has five years to live and repent.
    • If they choose the opposition, then I say, good luck to them. They have five years to ruminate and to regret what they did. And I have no doubts they will regret it.
    • If native Singaporeans are falling behind because the spurs are not stuck into the hide, that is their problem.
    • [our] women will become maids in other people’s countries, foreign workers

    Mr Lee isn’t quite the deep thinker you claim he is as he often cuts through complex issues wrongly or superficially. For example:
    • He theorised that high TFR in pre-world war 2 Germany led to war and expansion even though Germany in the mid-1960s had similar TFR levels but did not pursue war [4].
    • He claimed to be the long range radar looking for opportunities and threats but yet couldn’t see the impending collapse of the Global Financial markets in 2008 and the subsequent loss of billions by GIC and Temasek Holdings [5].
    • He claimed that we either embraced F1 and all the glitz of our globalised world today or we risk going out of business and running out of food [5] when the whole tourism industry constituted only 4% of our GDP (Singapore Tourism Board Annual Report 2011/2012 page 5).
    • He said New Zealand is green because it is the last stop on the bus line when similarly last-stop Easter Island and the Anasazi have become ruins over time [5].
    • He said English connected us to modern sciences [6] even as Japan, Taiwan, South Korea and Germany didn’t need English to be similarly connected to modern sciences.

    Lee was never a champion of education. For him, education always served the political purpose, not the other way round. When Singapore was to merge into Malaysia, Lee emphasised both Malay and English in schools but after our ejection from Malaysia, he emphasised English only [7].

    Similarly, Lee’s so-called transformation of Singapore education wasn’t for education’s sake but for politics sake. His closure of Chinese stream schools and Nanyang University and the undermining of the economic value of Chinese education were for the purpose of eradicating the political power of the Chinese educated masses [8].

    Finally, it was Lee Kong Chian, not Lee Kuan Yew, who first proposed bilingual policy in 1953 [9]. Lee Kong Chian even introduced bilingual education to the Chinese High School as early as 1949 [9] and many vernacular schools were already teaching English before that.

    Lee Kuan Yew, appearing in tears on television when announcing separation, was devastated. His feelings strongly contrasted with scenes in Chinatown where firecrackers were set off to celebrate liberation from rule by Malays from Kuala Lumpur. Most Singaporeans did not share the government’s dismay. Winsemius also did not share Lee’s dismay. He said in a 1981 interview: To my amazement, a discussion had started: can Singapore survive? That is the only time I got angry in Singapore. I said: ‘now you have your hands free – use them!’ It was the best thing that happened during the whole period from 1960 till today.

    World Bank GNI figures only stretch back to 1980. So have to rely on Penn World Tables instead. Although Penn World Tables doesn’t have GNI figures, it has GNP to GDP ratios which can be used to obtain GNP figures from GDP figures. GNP figures are similar to GNI figures and they stretch all the way back to 1960 for Singapore. The figures, in 2005 PPP USD, are then converted to 2010 PPP USD to obtain US$4,794 which puts Singapore in the Upper Middle Income bracket. 2010 is the last year available in Penn World Tables and is as close to 2011 as one can get.

    This is further supported by Carl A. Trocki who wrote on page 166 of his book “Singapore: wealth, power and the culture of control”: Singapore had already attained a middle income status in 1960 with a per capita GDP of $1,330.
