    SDP Member: Marsiling Residents Indifferent To Halimah’s Presidential Candidacy, Wants By-Election

    We continued our house visits at one of the HDB blocks in Marsiling this evening.

    We asked the residents 2 questions:

    1. The incumbent, Mdm Halimah Yacob, has indicated her interest to contest the next Presidential Election (PE). She claimed that she has received a lot of encouragement & blessings from Marsiling constituents. Are you supportive of her presidential bid?

    Most of the residents we spoke to appeared lukewarm to this question & did not seem really bothered if she would contest or not- let alone support her.

    2. If Mdm Halimah contests the next PE, she will have to resign from the PAP & vacate her parliamentary seat. Do you think a by-election should be called thereafter so that Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC residents have a chance to elect a full slate of 4 new MPs?

    All the residents we spoke to unanimously agreed that a by-election should be called.

    The residents’ sentiments are in sharp contrast to what Minister Chan Chun Sing has said in Parliament (https://www.theonlinecitizen.com/…/no-by-election-if-minor…/).

    In the last General Elections in 2015, the PAP campaigned based on the slogan: “With You, For You, For Singapore”.

    It will be interesting to see how they can continue to keep the above election promise when they deny the voters of Marsiling-Yew Tee their constitutional rights to elect new political representatives via a by-election.

    Commentary: A Vote For Any Candidate Is A Vote To The PAP And Their Racist Policies

    We, the Malay Community, we have our pride and dignity.

    We shall not stoop so Low and fall into the trap of the PAP Government that the Malays need a reserved Presidential Election than only will they stand for election.

    If you vote for any of the candidates in this coming PE, it means you are agreeing to the racist and discriminatory policy of the PAP Government.

    Let’s look at the bigger picture. Malays are better than that. We shall not be manipulated by the Government into thinking that they are actually thinking of us.

    A vote for any of the candidate in the coming PE is a vote to the PAP and their racist policy.

    Spoil your vote!

    PAP Supporter: Halimah Yacob Shouldn’t Contest Presidency

    By all accounts, Madam Halimah Yacob is a warm, compassionate and humble person, and a popular MP; she is well-loved by her constituents. Madam Halimah has also carried out her duties as Speaker of Parliament with dignity, as the first female Speaker of Parliament in Singapore’s history.

    However, I feel she should not run for the office of Elected President.

    Firstly, she has been elected not only as a Member of Parliament, but as the all-important minority candidate of Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC. She owes a duty to those who elected her to stay on and fulfil her responsibilities as MP. It would also call the whole raison d’être of the GRC into question, if it is left without a minority representative. The role of Speaker of Parliament is also a vey important one. It shouldn’t be resigned from lightly.

    Secondly, although the position of Speaker is equivalent to a Minister in protocol, it surely isn’t in responsibility. One reason for raising the criteria for private sector candidates (chief executive role in a 500m company) was to benchmark it to the responsibilities of a Minister, who has to manage huge billion dollar budgets and hundreds to thousands of civil servants. The Speaker of Parliament has no such equivalent responsibility. It would thus detract from the credibility of recent changes to private sector eligibility criteria, if a former Speaker were deemed to have the necessary skill-sets to guard our financial reserves.

    Madam Halimah is already a highly respected MP. She has already cemented her place in history as being the first female Speaker of Parliament. Her services are arguably more needed amongst the constituents she loves, and who love her in return.

    I do hope Madam Halimah will seriously consider whether to run for EP, as she is doing, and decide eventually not to.

    As the debate continued into its second day in Parliament, PAP MP Zainal Sapari, a former teacher, used a very Malay way to impart some valuable advice to the Lee siblings.

    In the pantun, Zainal Sapari reminded them that your worldly possessions cannot be taken with you when you pass away. It was not worth risking family ties because of the riches.

    Harta ada tak dibawa mati
    Jangan kesal kemudian hari
    Bila ikatan keluarga tidak ada lagi

    Ibubapa hidup berdamai
    Banyak berkorban setiap hari
    Adik beradik jangan bercerai
