    Why is HY so eager to announce her candidacy for the EP and why is PM so eager to endorse her?

    What is their reason for jumping the gun ahead of the judgement of the 5-judge Apex Court on TCB appeal? There are three possible reasons:

    1. They are confident that the judgement will be in their favour.

    2. They have a sinister motive.

    3. To tell the public that whatever the judgement – open or closed only to the Malays – HY will be the PAPpie standard bearer.

    I think and hope it is the third scenario. If it pans out, I will be the first to declare my support for her.

    Otherwise, I will stay out and not be a party to a farce.

    SDP: Halimah’s Resignation Is A Deliberate, Calculated Ploy By PAP To Remove One Of Its MPs To Stand For Another Election

    Ms Halimah Yacob has announced that she will contest in the coming Presidential Elections and has resigned as MP for the Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC.

    The GRC system was introduced in 1988, the official reason being “to ensure that Singapore’s parliament would always be multiracial in composition and representation.” As such, the constitution requires that GRC teams include at least one member from a minority community.

    Given this rationale, Ms Halimah’s stepping down as MP runs counter to the essence of the GRC system both in letter and spirit. Her resignation must necessarily trigger a by-election in Marsiling-Yew Tee.

    The government determines the number of GRCs needed at any one general election necessary for fair representation. If the government can remove a minority MP at will after he/she is elected, why set the number of GRCs – and therefore the number of minority MPs – to be contested in the first place?

    In addition, the government stipulates the particular ethnic representation for a particular GRC so as to ensure that the ethnic community in that GRC is adequately and effectively represented. By removing that MP, is the government not also removing that community’s representation in Parliament?

    To be clear, Ms Halimah’s resignation is a deliberate and calculated ploy by the PAP to remove one of its MPs in order that she may stand for another election. The PAP cannot be allowed to vacate elected Parliamentary seats just to maximise its electoral chances for another office. It is an abuse of the system and makes a mockery of the general elections.

    If the PAP insists on taking such a step, it must abide by the rule of law and call for a by-election. It cannot have its cake and eat it too.

    Minister Chan Chun Sing says, however, that no by-election will be held if Ms Halimah were to resign from her seat. Such a unilateral and unconstitutional measure runs counter to the concept of the GRC system and must be challenged.

    To this end, the SDP will actively explore legal remedies to ensure that the PAP does not willy-nilly change rules or interpret the law to suit its own political ends by calling for a by-election in Marsiling-Yew Tee.

    Halimah Yacob Submits Letters Of Resignation As Speaker Of Parliament, MP M-YT GRC And PAP Member

    Halimah Yacob, who confirmed on Sunday (Aug 6) that she intends to contest the upcoming Presidential Election that has been reserved for Malay candidates, submitted her letters of resignation on Monday from her roles as Speaker of Parliament and People’s Action Party Member of Parliament (Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC).

    “I also tender my resignation from the People’s Action Party with immediate effect,” she said in her resignation letter to Prime Minister and Secretary-General of the PAP, Mr Lee Hsien Loong.

    She will also cease to be a member of the PAP Central Executive Committee and Chairperson of the PAP Seniors’ Group.

    She told Mr Lee that she had decided to contest the Presidential Election “after careful consideration and consultation with friends, colleagues and family members”.

    Speaking at a National Day dinner at the Marsiling Mega Sports Park, Mdm Halima had said: “I recognise that the position of the elected President has the tremendous capacity to do good for all Singaporeans and for Singapore.

    “Hence, I wish to inform you that I will be contesting in the coming Presidential Election.”

    She said on Sunday that she will ask Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong to consider sending an adviser to support the work of the other Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC MPs Lawrence Wong, Alex Yam and Ong Teng Koon. She also said she had asked Mr Lee to look into making “quick replacements” for the appointments she is holding.

    Singaporeans are sick and tired of being made second class citizens in their own home.

    We thought we had made it clear in 2011 that we want the rampant immigration and the social problems it causes to be rolled back, but it seems that after the 2015 elections, the PAP are back to their old ways.

    When I first moved into my estate 20 years ago, I remember being greeted very often by my local Singaporean RC chairman and his members. They were always so helpful and anyone who talked with them felt at ease. National Days back then felt genuinely patriotic. We would gather and sing songs over food with neighbours from all the races, Malay, Indian, Eurasian you name it!

    But as the years go by, I saw my RC members less and less. Some retired, some moved out. New committee members replaced them. In recent years, I even see an increase in RC members of questionable nationalities joining.

    These days when I walk into my RC, I can no longer hear the graceful melodies of Teresa Teng being sung by our local aunties! The Karaoke Rooms are quiet, and the meeting rooms are quiet. RCs these days are more like places for people to ingratiate themselves with the PAP MP and their volunteers. Even these volunteers, many of them are unashamedly new citizens!

    Where has Singapore’s Gotong Royong spirit gone?

    I saw this picture and felt inspired to lament the passing on of Singapore’s golden generation. We are really living in desperate times.
