Damanhuri Abas: Scandals Show That High Salary Is Not The Answer To Eradicate Corruption

The trail of scandals spanning just the last decade along the corridors of power, sadly results from the chronic malaise of institutionalised governance when a single dominant party rule continues unabated.

We had the following scandals, CEO of NFK, TT Durai in 2005, Edwin Yeo of CPIB in 2008, Peter Lim Chief of SCDF in 2013, Lim Cheng Ho of MFA in 2014, Bernard Lim Yong Soon of NParks in 2014, CEO of NKF, Edmond Kwok 2016, and most recently, Kong Hee and Friends of City Harvest Church, 2017. Just to list a few of them.

And we also had the personal indiscretion of PAP MPs in the case of Speaker of Parliament Mr Micheal Palmer and the infamous affair involving PAP MP for Bukit Batok that happened only last year, Mr David Ong and his married grassroots woman volunteer.

Now we have the latest scandal involving none other than a former Mayor and PAP MP Zainudin Nordin further reminding the people to seriously relook at all PAP leaders. They are not as clean as their white garment looks.

The list of corruptions in their ranks and files of cronies as well as their leaders are undeniable facts and not fake news. It is crystal clear now to all Singaporeans that the logic of high pay and incorruptible public officers or leaders are hollow PAP sloganeering promising leaders of integrity and merit but delivering otherwise.

Will the PAP reform and correct themselves? Most unlikely as the signs are showing the opposite, seen from the constitutional amendments on the Elected Presidency to the most recent clipping of further Presidential powers passed in parliament.

We are even seeing more reduction of space for critical input and feedback which are necessary and healthy developments needed for reform and progress in a maturing democracy. They in fact, do the reverse to entrench their unchallenged controlling power. They still prefer to trust their own self-checking and the above samplings of scandals suffices to discredit it.

All hegemonic power feels threatened by the natural God ordained system of check and balance. Their obsession with perpetual and absolute control will become their very undoing. History recalls many past powers wanting to remain so even though their time is up. Eventually they went astray falling from grace on their own highway of luxury and greed.

Singaporeans therefore must do our part by intervening to stop this slippery decline down the slope of democratic regression happening before our very eyes. The only way to do so, is to put into parliament more oppositions to raise the vital questions that they themselves will not. The longer we delay, the tougher it becomes, as they will resort to all machavillian means within their vast controlling disposal to ensure their hegemony remains forever.

The stakes are very high. It is about our believe in the Singaporean spirit to rise up to collectively remake and better our citizen’s deal. To share what we have with each other, to not leave anyone behind and to demand from our elected leaders, service and priority to the people and not their vested crony interest. The scandals are reminders of what is wrong in our society and for us to collectively act together as one united people to affect that vital redirection for our beloved nation.

Singaporeans must realise that the only constant is change. Ours is past due. The People needs a New Deal with a very fresh and vibrant New face of real Hope, Integrity, Honesty, Courage and Humility. God-willing, together we can make it happen.

  • Anak Selebriti Sharin Azhar, Berlatih Dengan Pasukan Bolasepak Valencia Di Sepanyol

Anak Selebriti Sharin Azhar, Berlatih Dengan Pasukan Bolasepak Valencia Di Sepanyol

Peter Lim Buys Over Cristiano Ronaldo’s Image Rights

The image rights of Cristiano Ronaldo (picture), the world’s highest-paid footballer, are now being managed by a company owned by Singaporean businessman Peter Lim.

In a press release yesterday, it was announced that Mint Media, a Hong Kong-based company owned by Mr Lim, had secured a six-year deal with the Portuguese star, who is the reigning FIFA Ballon d’Or winner, the award handed out to the best football player in the world.

Mint Media will own and oversee all of the 30-year-old’s image rights, except those relating to Real Madrid, the Spanish football club for which he plays.

Due to confidentiality reasons, contractual details, such as how much the deal is worth, were not revealed. But in response to queries from TODAY, a spokesperson for Mint Media revealed that Asian companies were very interested in working with Ronaldo.

“We are seeing a lot of interest from Asian companies, including those from Singapore looking to expand their markets into North and South Americas as well as Europe, where Ronaldo has a huge following,” said the spokesperson.

“We believe they would be keen to have Ronaldo, who is one of the most accomplished and popular sportsmen in the world, endorse their products. And we hope the collaborations will see Ronaldo making more appearances to Asia in general and Singapore in particular.”

Ronaldo, who previously played for record-20-time English league champions Manchester United before joining Real in 2009, is the third-highest-paid athlete in the world, behind boxers Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao, according to Forbes.

Among the brands Ronaldo endorses are sportswear giant Nike, nutrition and weight management firm Herbalife, Swiss watchmaker TAG Heuer, and fashion and lifestyle brand Sacoor Brothers. A Forbes report this year stated that he draws US$27 million (S$36.4 million) from endorsements alone.

Ronaldo will be Mint Media’s first client as it looks to venture into sports marketing, and Mr Lim — who last year became owner of Spanish club Valencia — expressed confidence that the football star’s brand “will continue to grow”.

“Peter has a valuable and extensive business network, and I have always admired his entrepreneurial savvy and ability to grow businesses,” said Ronaldo in a statement.

When the six-year deal ends, Ronaldo will be 36, which traditionally is the twilight of the careers of many professional footballers. But the spokesperson said: “We believe Ronaldo’s popularity will transcend his football career, as he also has a strong following among non-football fans because of his good looks and charisma.”

    WORLD’S HIGHEST-PAID ATHLETES (TOP 10):

    1. Floyd Mayweather (Boxing): US$300 million

  • Peter Lim: Positive People A Factor In Valencia’s Champions League Push

Peter Lim: Positive People A Factor In Valencia’s Champions League Push

ingapore billionaire Peter Lim paid tribute to his Valencia team after the Spanish side eased to a 3-0 win over city rivals Levante on Monday night.

The win brought the club to 65 points and firmly in the hunt for third spot, one behind Atletico Madrid, which gives it an automatic slot in next season’s Champions League. They remain 10 points behind leaders Barcelona.

And with seven games to the end of the season, the likelihood of Valencia making its first return to Europe’s elite football tournament since the 2012/2013 season is something the former remisier is relishing.

In his first comments since forking out €420 million (S$605 million) last October to take over the club, Lim, 62, expressed his delight with his acquisition.

“The experience has been very good so far. We took over a club with very positive people willing to work hard together to move the club to the top,” Lim, estimated to be worth US$2.05 billion (S$2.79 billion) by Forbes Singapore, told The Straits Times.

“As far as football is concerned, I’m enjoying the games very much. Spanish football is in a league of its own and highly competitive.”

With a capacity crowd of 53,000 at the Mestalla cheering the home side on, headers from striker Paco Alcacer and winger Sofiane Feghouli and a spectacular long-range piledriver from forward Alvaro Negredo delighted the fans and Lim.

“As you saw for yourself from this game alone, the Valencian fans are very different,” added Lim. “They are really very passionate.

“All our goals tonight were the result of excellent teamwork. The entire team played very well, putting the episode in Bilbao (conceding a late goal to draw) behind them.”

Among those at the match was former Singapore foreign affairs minister George Yeo, a personal friend of Lim’s.

He said: “As a fellow Singaporean, I feel proud of him. In the last two days, I got to know the small Singapore team which has become part of Valencia Football Club and indeed part of Valencia. Valencia Football Club is an important part of the life of the people of Valencia.”

Valencia, which last won the La Liga in 2004 and reached the Champions League final in 2000 and 2001, are dreaming of a return to glory days under current coach Nuno Espirito Santo. With Lim’s investment, the club managed to clear a €200 million debt, invested £170 million (S$342 million) to complete construction of a new stadium and also splashed €45 million to recruit two Benfica players – striker Rodrigo Moreno, 22, and midfielder Andre Gomes, 20.
