  • Bangladeshi MacRitchie Reservoir Rapist Jailed 17 Years, Gets 24 Rotan Strokes

Bangladeshi MacRitchie Reservoir Rapist Jailed 17 Years, Gets 24 Rotan Strokes

Bangladeshi construction worker Pramanik Liton was on Friday (May 19) sentenced to 17 years’ jail and 24 strokes of the cane for raping a hiker at MacRitchie Reservoir Park in 2015.

Liton, 24, was convicted of four charges, including two counts of aggravated rape, one count of sexual assault by penetration and one count of abduction for illicit intercourse. Another two charges were taken into consideration. Prosecutors had sought a jail term of at least 20 years and 24 strokes.

The construction worker had left his dormitory on the morning of Feb 8, 2015, armed with a 16cm-long knife and waited along the Lornie Trail for “easy prey”. When he spotted the victim walking alone, he approached her and struck up a conversation, pretending he needed directions.

He asked the 40-year-old Chinese national to have sex with him, and when she refused, he pulled out the knife and used it against her. The court heard the woman lost consciousness at one point, when Liton covered her mouth and nose with one hand while pressing the knife to her neck with the other.

He later raped her “so forcefully” that the woman screamed in pain, the prosecution said. Then Liton offered her S$50 to “buy medicine so she would not get pregnant”. DNA tests found his semen in the victim’s mouth and vagina and on her panties.

    “BIZARRE AND INCOMPREHENSIBLE” DEFENCE

But Liton denied the charges, and on Thursday, insisted he did not touch the victim, much less rape her. He claimed then that he did not talk to her, but only made sounds.

“I just tried to scare her and she died out of fear,” he said.

“No woman should have to fear she may be abducted and raped at knifepoint while talking a walk in the park in broad daylight, most certainly not in Singapore,” Deputy Public Prosecutor Stella Tan said then.

In finding Liton guilty as charged, Justice Choo Han Teck called his defence “bizarre and incomprehensible”. “First, it was an outright denial, which against the weight of the evidence seems to be a defence of desperation.

“Secondly, you claimed the victim had died. Clearly she had not, or this would have been the world’s first supernatural trial. I see nothing supernatural, only a traumatised woman who has convinced me you had committed the offences upon which you are being tried,” he said.

Justice Choo added the victim’s evidence was “clear, cogent and consistent” and supported by the forensic evidence and Liton’s own early statements to the police, which, at trial, he denied ever making.

When asked whether he had anything to say after he had been convicted, Liton said he had “made a mistake that I did not plead guilty in the first place. And also did not engage a lawyer (sic)”. He pleaded to be given the “minimum sentence”.

  • Chinese Community Riot In Paris To Protest Alleged Police Brutality

Chinese Community Riot In Paris To Protest Alleged Police Brutality

Protesters spelling the word ‘violence’ in front of riot policemen in Paris on Monday.

French police said on Tuesday they opened an inquiry after a Chinese man was shot dead by police at his Paris home, triggering riots in the French capital by members of the Chinese community and a diplomatic protest by Beijing.

The shooting on Sunday, which led China’s foreign ministry to call in a French diplomat, brought about a 100 members of the French-Chinese community on to the streets in Paris’s main Chinatown district on Monday night.

Some protesters threw projectiles outside the district’s police headquarters and a number of vehicles were torched in a confrontation with riot police.

Media reports said a 56-year-old man of Chinese origin was shot dead at his home on Sunday night in front of his family after police were called to investigate an altercation with a neighbour.

Police said the man attacked police with scissors, adding that an inquiry had been opened. The man’s family, according to media reports, denied this and some media said he was holding scissors because he had been cutting fish.

Police said they questioned 35 people after Monday’s street protests and three members of the police had been treated for slight injuries, they said.

In Beijing, the foreign ministry said on Tuesday it had summoned a French diplomat to explain events. It also sought a thorough investigation by French authorities and steps to be ensure the safety of Chinese citizens in France.

  • Terrex Case: PRC Ship Captain And Shipping Company Face Charges From Hong Kong Authorities

Terrex Case: PRC Ship Captain And Shipping Company Face Charges From Hong Kong Authorities

The captain of a container ship belonging to shipping company APL has been charged with not having the required licence when his vessel stopped in Hong Kong with nine Singapore Armed Forces armoured vehicles last November.

Pan Xuejun, 39, did not enter a plea at the West Kowloon Magistrate Court yesterday. The Chinese national faces one count of importing strategic commodities without the necessary licence. He was allowed bail of HK$50,000 (S$9,010), and his case has been adjourned to May 19. If convicted, Pan could face a fine and up to seven years in jail.

APL is understood to be also facing prosecution.

The Hong Kong authorities said it has “sufficient evidence to prove” that both APL and Pan had breached the law. It also said the Singapore Government could not be held responsible for the breach as it was only the consignee of the vehicles.

The court heard that on Nov 23 last year, Pan was the captain of a vessel transporting the Singapore-made Terrex infantry carriers back to Singapore after a military exercise in Taiwan. The ship stopped in Hong Kong without an import licence issued by the city’s Director-General of Trade and Industry. This led Customs officials to seize the vehicles.

According to the Customs authorities, vessels must declare all cargo on board before docking at its port. Generally, cargo in transit does not require an “import or export licence” as it will remain on the ship. However, such a licence is needed for “certain type of strategic commodities”.

  • PRC GrabHitch Driver Pulled Down Lady’s Skirt After She Refused To Pay $2 ERP Charge

PRC GrabHitch Driver Pulled Down Lady’s Skirt After She Refused To Pay $2 ERP Charge

My nightmare with Grabhitch experience. Dear All, this post has been posted to warn the public of my upsetting experience with Grabhitch just yesterday evening. *This post is 100% true and has been written by my personal experience, If it has accounted to defame to any company/person, it has been done to warn of others danger.

I have been a passenger with Grab for at least 2 years and had at least 200 rides with them. But my experience yesterday might be a change to everything. Yesterday evening at 6.50pm, my Grabhitch arrived and picked me up at my designated venue. Below is an attached screenshot of my booking.

The whole ride was smooth until when I was about to alight, the china Grabhitch driver demanded for me to pay an additional $2 for the ERP incurred during the trip.

As i chose Grabpay, I told the driver to add into the payment and it will be deducted. He then told me that Grabhitch will not allow the deduction as:

    1) the driver clearly knows he is NOT allowed to collect tolls from me
    2) Grabhitch has made clear to all their Hitch drivers that tolls are to be beared by drivers
    3) Which means the amount deducted from my credit card already INCLUDED the ERP.

So, when I told him that he can follow up the matter with Grab, he flared up. When i was alighting, he pulled my bandage skirt down with a huge force causing my skirt to reach my knees. With the force exerted, i returned into the car after my foot planted. (FYI, I was sitting on the passenger’s sit behind on the left) Being shocked and humiliated this way, I screamed at the china driver in mandarin

” How can you just pull someone’s skirt down? ” He did not release his hands from my skirt and still held on to them with force, and continued demanding for the $2 cash. I was totally fine about paying the additional $2 and did not argue about it with him.

But after what he did, pulling my skirt down to my panties and NOT even trying to get out of the car to settle peacefully… i really am lost of words. If some of you might think he was trying to grab hold of me and accidentally pulled my skirt down, NO.

He still continue pulling and holding firmly to my skirt which was already down to my knees while arguing! I just kept screaming at him to let go and when he finally did..

I was in shock and trembling and what i wanted was to just quickly alight that car and stop that guy from having any contact with me. So i quickly tried to step out of the car on the passenger door on the left.

When the driver saw me putting my leg out, he started moving the car! How dangerous is that? I was wearing heels and he just moved the car when my leg is already out of the car.

The whole situation happened at Hong Kong Street. At that moment being so flustered, i actually still left the car while the vehicle is still moving as i really cant imagine what would he do to me next.

I quickly regained my balance and pulled up my skirt and i saw some Valet nearby and shouted in mandarin for their help. “can u all come over n help me? he just pulled me skirt down!!”

but the valet just stood there and stared LOL. In the mean time, the china driver heard and he immediately drove the car away with the passenger door still open. The valet that stood there and NOT bothering to help, is from the company Valet Uncle.

SUPER dissapointed and shameful for them. After i got down the car, i was extremely emotionally unstable and broke down. I dialed for the police and they sent me down to cantonment immediately.

The driver tried calling me 5 times after he fled, my mom called back and he cursed our family with full of vulgarities and for my whole family to die. And said he would not be afraid for the police to catch him. Someone which is not remorseful and thinks that Singapore is like his homeland. As of now, Report has been done and authorities has been informed and to be followed up.

The driver has been banned, and i am really distressed by the situation. Is Grabhitch really that safe to use? You determine. I hope i put across a message that would help prevent future similar incidents.
