  • Family Of Presidential Hopeful Salleh Marican Support Their Father, Gears Up For Election Campaign

Family Of Presidential Hopeful Salleh Marican Support Their Father, Gears Up For Election Campaign

When her father and CEO of Second Chance Properties Mohd Salleh Marican told her late last year that he intended to run for president, Nadia Marican laughed at the idea of becoming a member of Singapore’s First Family.

But Salleh’s eldest daughter and her other family members realised that the 67-year-old patriarch was serious about his presidential bid. They rallied around him and began to plan for his election campaign. Even the current fasting month is not slowing their momentum.

Her brother-in-law Ferus Bakar is overseeing Salleh’s media communication plans while she and her younger sister Radiah Marican, 40, are acting as their father’s personal assistants in the campaign.

Nadia, who is currently pursuing a PhD in International Psychology at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology, said that her father has a good chance of winning the election. Wearing a navy blue midi dress, Nadia was joined by Radiah and Salleh during the interview at her house in the eastern part of Singapore.

Salleh’s campaign kicked off on 5 June 2017, when he collected his presidential election forms at the Elections Department (ELD). But Salleh was sidetracked afterwards by the online criticisms of his lack of proficiency in the Malay language.

Nadia said that the Marican family was prepared for negative reactions from some netizens. “It was so vicious that we were surprised at first. But personally, I think they are trolls,” she added.

Qualities of being a “good president”

When asked about her father’s attributes that would put him in good stead to be the President of Singapore, Nadia was effusive in her praise for him.

“The majority of Singaporeans prefer their president to be apolitical and my father represents that. I am confident that he stands a good chance, given that he is a man of honour and integrity and has the leadership qualities to be president,” said Nadia.

“He has a pragmatic approach to life and has a soft heart. He is a man who is generous in sharing knowledge with others. These are the qualities needed for a president,” she added.

Also, Salleh’s ability to turn around his company when the odds were stacked against him could inspire Singaporeans and convince them that he is the right man to become a “People’s President”, Nadia said.

“If he wins, I will be the proudest daughter in the world. Who knows, maybe the tea party in the (Istana) garden might come true!” she quipped.

  • Salleh Marican Admits His Malay Rabak, Asserts That Mastery Of English Language Is Sufficient For President To Fulfill Duties

Salleh Marican Admits His Malay Rabak, Asserts That Mastery Of English Language Is Sufficient For President To Fulfill Duties

Presidential hopeful and CEO of Second Chance Properties Mohd Salleh Marican said he is taking Malay lessons ahead of the upcoming presidential election after he was criticised for his poor grasp of the language during an interview.

In an exclusive interview with Yahoo Singapore, Salleh, 67, said the weekly lessons would enable him to converse in Malay fluently about his candidacy during media interviews and interactions with the electorate. Salleh was talking to Yahoo Singapore on Monday (19 June) at the house of his eldest daughter Nadia Marican in the eastern part of Singapore.

On 5 June 2017, Salleh struggled to answer in Malay during an interview with a group of reporters outside the Elections Department after he collected his presidential election forms. The incident prompted criticisms online about his inability to speak the language well given that the September presidential election is reserved for Malay candidates.

Instead of being affected by the criticisms, Salleh said he is taking firm steps to address the issue. The father of four added that while he is able to converse in “everyday Malay” currently, he wants to improve his conversational skills by taking lessons from a Malay newspaper and television media veteran.

“You don’t need to be good in Malay to carry out your duties as a president because the official language is English.

“Now that this has happened, I have to do my best to improve my mastery of the language and I am taking it as a challenge. I am taking several Malay lessons a week and I am challenging myself that on Nomination Day, I will make an off the cuff public speech in the language,” he added.

  • Presidential Hopeful Second Chance CEO Gives Second Chance To Employees, Many Still Unhappy

Presidential Hopeful Second Chance CEO Gives Second Chance To Employees, Many Still Unhappy

Second Chance CEO Mr Salleh Marican has announced his intention to contest the upcoming Presidential Elections. While he does not qualify going by strictly by the criteria set, Mr Salleh Marican believes he has the necessary EQ and good judgment to become a President.

It was also said that Mr Salleh Marican involves himself in philanthropic activities in his role as Treasurer on the Board of Temasek Cares, a foundation established by GIC Temasek Holdings. It appears that is philanthropic spirit extended to his employees.

According to a former employee, Mr Salleh Marican does not report theft cases by his employees to the police. Instead, those caught were made to sign confessions but were allowed to continue to work on the condition that their bonuses were withheld by the company as a form of security. This was the company policy after a few theft cases were found.

masa tu ada a few theft cases dekat 2nd chance. so employees ni were made to sign confession letter so tak report to police. En. Salleh kasi diorang kerja, tapi lepas tu En. Salleh withhold bonus $2000 semua staff so siape-siape yang kene caught curi, kene potong dari $2000 tu

Despite this, not all is rosy. Similar to many businesses, there are bound to be disgruntled employees. According to the former employee, there was a time a few years ago when MOM had to step in to investigate the company for not paying the employees’ CPF.

Lagipun dulu En. Salleh tak bayar CPF kiteorang, sampai jadi kes MOM. MOM turun check.

The employee was of the opinion that Mr Salleh Marican also did not care enough about the welfare of his employees and hence, cannot be trusted with the welfare of Singaporeans, if he becomes President. They had to work long hours during the Ramadan period but are only given 1 day off a week. Although they are unhappy, many had no choice but to stay on working because they are lowly-educated.bMany feel indebted to him for giving them a job in the first place. The

Aku rasa En. Salleh ni tak suitable jadi calon Presiden sebab staff welfare dekat company dia pun teruk. Time bulan puasa, kerja kat situ rabak, work long hours, and then ada 1 hari off je. Semua orang tak happy, but we have no choice, sebab kita low-education. Ramai kita terhutang budi to him for giving us jobs. Tapi kan, kalau En. Salleh tak boleh handle staff dia well, macam mana nak jadi Presiden and handle welfare Singaporeans?

Mr Salleh Marican gives his employees second chances but there are many who are disgruntled. Will you give him this one chance at the Presidency?

Y’all looking for a President or a Budayawan? You all talk cock why Malay cannot be this why Malay cannot be that then when got Malay representation you all damn kaninabuay. His company is worth over $200 million. Kau duit installment motor pun terkial-kial nak bayar lu rilek sua.

Aku dah cakap dah. Our community punya minority complex one kind. Ada je tak kena. Penguasaan Bahasa Melayu dia kurang bagus, big fucking deal. Kau try aku letak camera depan muka kau suruh kau bertutur dalam Bahasa Ibunda. Korang English dah half past six the only English words you all know are “Please Make This Viral” lepas tu exclamation mark letak belasan lebih. Language can be learned, polished. Business acumen, resilience, kau ada?

Kau takda. Also, how Malay you all want him to be? Kau expect dia pakai tanjak, keluarkan keris, bersyair depan reporters? And people actually have the nerve to make fun of how his wife look? She is swimming in money. Kau swim dalam apa? Hutang? Duduk depan TV tengok JUS hoping to get $10,000 dalam cabutan bertuah ke? Sungai.

Orang tu baru je pick up his papers. He is not even approved to run as a candidate and the community is already being damn cibai. Way to go. Bangsa lain cuma tinggal ketawakan kita. Kalau macam gini toksah ada Malay president sua. Korang not ready, evidently. • Mohamed Salleh Marican – An Inspiration To Investors And Entrepreneurs

Mohamed Salleh Marican – An Inspiration To Investors And Entrepreneurs

Truly an inspiration to investors and entrepreneurs alike, Mr Mohamed Salleh Marican (or Mohamed Salleh S/o Kadir Mohideen Saibu Maricar as he is registered at the SGX) is the very embodiment of the epigram, “try and try until you succeed”. Undaunted by a first failed business, Mr Salleh put up what is now Second Chance Properties, and hasn’t looked back since.

Now the company’s CEO and Executive Chairman as well as its founder, Mr Salleh is also a Spiking Sophisticated Investor. An SGX announcement last January put the post-transaction percentage of his direct and deemed shares of Second Chance Properties at 57.78%, and 8.45% respectively.

    If There’s a Will…

Mr Salleh began as an entrepreneur in 1974, when he established a menswear tailoring business which he was compelled to shut down soon afterwards. He tried again just five months later by opening Second Chance, sticking to the menswear segment but switching to ready-to-wear retail. His determination paid off, and in less than 10 years, he had four outlets in Singapore.

By 1988, Mr Salleh had adopted franchising, affordable pricing and a Western fashion image for Second Chance, which enabled him to grow the company to include 18 stores in Singapore and 7 stores in Malaysia.

Mr Salleh’s first major award proved to be a double-edged sword, as winning created awareness of Second Chance as a local brand. As sales dropped drastically, he decided to change strategies again, and close 21 of his 25 stores. By 1992, he had diversified his business into ladies’ ready-to-wear for Malay women. The new line, dubbed “First Lady”, is still a bestseller today.

Mr Salleh then followed up First Lady’s success with Golden Chance, which retails gold jewellery. Soon afterwards, during the Asian financial crisis, he again diversified his business to include property, which turned out to be his most successful venture yet. Property now accounts for over 60% of the company’s profits, with rental income being the top contributor.

Today, Second Chance has over 200 employees working in 50 stores in Singapore and Malaysia. After listing on the SESDAQ in 1997, Second Chance moved to the SGX Main Board in 2004.

Mr Salleh has since won several other awards, including the Inaugural Malay Businessmen Award from the Singapore Malay Chamber of Commerce and Berita Harian; the Entrepreneurship Excellence Award from Lianhe Zaobao and the Entrepreneurship Development Centre of Nanyang Technological University; the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award, and the Best CEO Singapore Corporate Award.

    Mr Salleh in Action

Mr Salleh’s latest trading activities include increasing 1 million deemed shares of Second Chance Properties at SGD0.25 at the end of last January. A few days before, he had also increased 291,500 deemed Second Chance shares at SGD0.252.
