    “Halal” Butcher in Switzerland Sold Pork to Muslims for 3 Years

    A “halal” butcher has been taken to court after selling pork to Muslim customers for over three years.

    According to Morocco World News, the Swiss butcher reportedly sold 3.1 tons of pork to his Muslim customers, telling them it was halal and trying to pass it off as calf meat.

    Upon inspection of his facility, it was discovered that what he was selling as calf meat looked nothing like it should.

    “If customers had known it was pork, they would not have bought it because Islam forbids the consumption of this type of meat,” the prosecutor handling the case said.

    Now, the man is facing six months of jail time and is being fined 18,000 Swiss francs, which equates to roughly £11,880.

    He was charged with “fraud and misrepresentation.”

    As Morocco News noted, the butcher was engaging in two-fold deception in selling pork as if it were veal.

    Firstly, Muslims were buying and consuming pork, which is against their religion.

    Secondly, he was making higher profits since pork is cheaper than calf meat.

    Ng Eng Hen Justifies $25,900 English Language Course for PLA Officer

    SINGAPORE: Officers from the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) participate in exchanges with other militaries for staff college courses.

    The staff college courses attended are useful to establish good relationships with the militaries of other countries, and understand their perspectives, said Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen on Wednesday (Nov 5). When incidents occur, they can also be very useful resource persons on the ground.

    “So for these reasons, militaries all over have for many years exchanged officers to each other’s courses to establish better ties,” he said.

    Dr Ng said this in response to a question from Non-Constituency Member of Parliament Lina Chiam. Mrs Chiam had asked about a tender that had been called to provide an English Language course for an officer from China’s People’s Liberation Army.

    Dr Ng noted that the language of instruction can pose a problem for officers who attend courses run by other militaries, and language proficiency is important if the officers are to benefit from the course.

    “For some foreign officers who attend SAF’s military courses, we have to help them gain language proficiency so that they can benefit from their time here,” he said, adding that Singapore’s military officers spend time gaining language proficiency when they go to other countries for the same purpose.

    Dr Ng said that one officer from the People’s Liberation Army required a personalised 360-hour English Language course. The Defence Ministry had put out a tender on the Government’s e-procurement portal, and awarded the contract to the lowest offer that met the requirements. This came to S$25,900, which amounted to about S$70 per hour.

    Dr Ng emphasised that this was in strict compliance with the Government’s regulations.

    PARIS: A French start-up is hoping to take a slice of the multi-billion Halal food market with a device allowing diners to find out within minutes whether a dish contains pork.

    Capital Biotech has received orders from as far afield as Turkey, Chile and Indonesia for its “Halal Test” which tests within 10 minutes whether a food contains pork meat, forbidden for Muslims and Jews.

    Launched only a fortnight ago, the company has won nearly 100,000 (US$135,000) in orders, a “surprise” according to co-founder Jean-Francois Julien.

    The company acknowledges that the test, a one-use device costing 6.90 euros (S$11.16), does not constitute a complete “Halal” test, which also requires information about how the animal was slaughtered. But it “allows you to dispel a one-off doubt, for example when you are on holiday or when a new “Halal” product hits the market,” said Julien.

    To use the device, the cautious diner mixes a small amount of food with hot water and inserts a small strip into the mixture. The strip tests for pork proteins and takes less than 10 minutes.

    France’s five million Muslims (the largest population in Europe) have been hit with food scandals – in 2011, “Halal” sausages were discovered to contain pork – and want to be sure they are not eating forbidden food, said Abbas Bendali from marketing firm Solis.

    Capital Biotech believes however that 70 percent of its sales will eventually come from professionals who want a quick way of testing whether food is suitable for non-pork eaters.

    Bendali said the cost of the device would inevitably deter individuals “at a time of economic crisis.” “It’s difficult to invest seven euros to test a bowl of pasta that costs three,” he said. Muslims are more reassured by “a genuine Halal certificate,” he said.

    A FIRST, BUT CAUTION

    But the firm is not limiting itself just to pork, hoping to make itself the firm of reference for tests on all types of food allergies. It intends to launch soon a range of tests for soya, egg or almonds – all potential allergens – in ready meals.

    The firm will then roll out tests for gluten, peanut or milk. In the long-run, the start-up plans to extend its quick-fire testing to pharmaceutical products. However, Faycal Bennatif, marketing director of the world’s top biological analysis group Eurofins, told AFP it was not down to the consumer to perform quality tests on food products.

    In the wake of the horsemeat scandal that rocked Europe last year, Eurofins has been inundated for requests to test meat products but has not developed a quick-fire test. “We work with DNA sequencing in the lab which is not at all the same method,” said Bennatif, adding he was “dubious” as to how efficient the new quick tests were.

    Capital Biotech’s “Halal tests” do not require authorisation to be launched on the market, estimated at 5.5 billion euros (US$6.8 billion) in France alone, although authorities will examine the reliability of the testing method.

    Expert in allergens, Jocelyne Just said the tests were a “first” but should be treated with caution “in the sense that a patient can be allergic to one food form but not another, for example to raw milk but not pasteurised.”

    As for Capital Biotech, the start-up already has its eye on the next market by securing domain names for “kosher tests”.

    Penang-born Husband Took Singaporean Wife and Two Children to Syria, Join ISIS

    A 37-year-old Penang-born man has brought his Singaporean family to Syria where they are believed to be in different locations fighting alongside jihadists or supporting them.

    His Singaporean wife was a 47-year-old widow who had a daughter and a son – aged 18 and 14 – from a previous marriage, The Star newspaper reported on Friday.

    The report quoted sources as saying the family went to Syria in November, but did not stay together.

    “The authorities believe the man joined the Jabhat Al-Nusra group and his stepson the IS (Islamic State),” the sources told the newspaper. IS is also known as the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

    “The wife worked as a cook while the daughter taught English to the children of the fighters in Syria,” one source was quoted as saying.

    The family members are believed to be in different parts of Syria, according to the newspaper. One possible location is east Hama, where jihadists are known to have set up a base of operations.

    Authorities are keeping close tab on the family and trying to find out how they were influenced to go to Syria, said the report. The sources said the authorities believe their decision had to do with the woman’s former husband.

    In July, Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean disclosed in parliament that several Singaporeans are among 12,000 foreigners taking part in the armed conflict in Syria, including a couple of parents who had taken along their children

    Among the “handful” of Singaporeans is said to be a woman who went with her foreign husband and their two teenage children.

    “The whole family is taking part in the conflict in various ways, either joining the terrorist groups to fight, or providing aid and support to the fighters,” said Mr Teo, who is also Singapore’s Home Affairs Minister.

    Another man, Haja Fakkurudeen Usman Ali, 37, took with him his wife and three children between the ages of two and 11. He is a Singapore citizen who was an Indian national, the Home Affairs Ministry had said in March when announcing that he was under investigation.

    Several other Singaporeans had planned to join the conflict but were detained before they could set off, and some others were under investigation, said Mr Teo.

    The Star newspaper had earlier reported that five former Internal Security Act detainees are among 40 Malaysians who have joined the militants.

    The five named include 45-year-old former Kedah PAS Youth information chief Mohd Lotfi Ariffin, who was injured in an attack which killed the youngest Malaysian jihadist in Syria on Tuesday. Mohammad Fadhlan Shahidi Mohammad Khir, 21, from Kedah was the second Malaysian jihadist to be killed in Syria.

    The first Malaysian militant to die in Syria was Abu Turob, 52, who was killed during an attack by tanks and snipers on Aug 19.

    In Putrajaya, Malaysian Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi called on Malaysians to reject extremist views and protect the country’s image. He said the actions of a few individuals did not reflect the true nature of the country and its people.

    “We don’t want Malaysia to be presumed internationally as a breeding ground for terrorists (and) we must protect the image of our religion and country based on the principle of moderation or wasatiyyah.

    “This principle has to be defended by all citizens. We have to avoid being extreme left or extreme right.”

    AUGUST 31 — Often in the lift that deposits me on my flat’s floor, I am quizzed by curious neighbours and their ilk on my Singaporean-ness.

    “Where are you from girl?”

    “Singapore”

    “Then your mother? India lah?”

    “No. Singapore. You?”

    “I’m Singaporean lah.”

    The perpetrators of these questions are usually Chinese.

    They are polite, often friendly exchanges but unfortunately they belie a persistent and pervasive Chinese chauvinism that, too often, underlies this nation.

    The Chinese identity — the C in the oft-used CMIO (Chinese Malay Indian Other) construct the state is so enamored with, is the default identity. If you aren’t Chinese you need to justify your Singaporeaness, and even so you’ll never be quite as Singaporean as a Singaporean Chinese.

    In a very astute commentary published last year, social activist Mohamed Imran Mohamed Taib summed it as such: Despite our professed desire for a unified nation “regardless of race, language or religion”, what had transpired for the last four decades was the opposite. Race has become a single most important marker for our social existence. In other words, we have become a totally racialised society. There is hardly a moment in our social interactions that we are not reminded of our racial identity — from the imprint in our identity cards, to our schooling years to job applications.

    We are constantly reduced to our race.

    The other day, my brother exclaimed that he was stretched and needed to hire more people to join his creative agency. But, he shared, he had to make sure they weren’t all from his ethnic group lest his 23-man-strong set-up be pigeon-holed as an Indian organisation and be written off by the majority of Singaporeans.

    Now, with a very healthy mix of races running about his two-storey shop-house office, I think he is far from having to field such an accusation. But his commitment to multi-ethnicity isn’t the issue.

    Here’s the issue: I am certain none of his Chinese Singaporean counterparts have had to entertain this question and fear the repercussions of being labelled as mono-ethnic. After all, most small businesses on the island are overwhelmingly Chinese.

    And that is, we’re raised to believe, okay.

    Only state-sponsored banners seem to feel obliged to dutifully represent the Singaporean in every shade.

    This idea that minorities have to justify themselves is not a new one, but it is not always accepted; there are people who argue than Singapore is truly a meritocracy that disregards race.

    My husband, who is from a very dominant majority in his country of birth, often accuses me of over-reacting. Singaporean Indians are too “jumped up” he says — most people don’t really care about the colour of your skin.

    And if ever I felt like maybe he was right, I need only to look at the recent string of comments that trail the headlines surrounding our newest Miss Singapore Universe.

    Remarkable for their lack of any awareness — in the past days I’ve seen comments denouncing the 23-year-old for being “unattractive” — her skin is too dark, she isn’t as pretty as a Korean girl and one particularly vile character claimed that looking at her made him want to throw up.

    Now, I am no expert in beauty pagents. But Rathi Menon seems for all intents and purposes beauty-queen like. She’s tall, poised and has the big hair I have long associated with sash-wearing beauties. But somehow she falls short?

    Years ago, in 1998, Aneetha Ayyavoo cinched the title of Supermodel of the World — a genuine global title, and the best perfomance ever by a SIngaporean at an international pageant. And the reward she enjoyed locally hovered on zero.

    These days, Ayyavoo is a regular on Tamil programming channel — Vasantham. Really? Supermodel of the World and our city’s mainstream media doesn’t hold her up as a cause for celebration. Though she was a Singaporean contestant she ended up being an Indian success and not a national success.

    This constant and nagging discrimination manifests in many ways: A friend tries to rent a flat and is advised by his housing agent to say he is a foreigner from America since his name is rather ambiguous. Because, as he will learn, many landlords are very open about their decision to not rent to Indian tenants.

    That we’re encouraged to tolerate the month-long offerings for the Hungry Ghost month that often leave entire void decks in a mess of burnt floor, ash and strewn paper in the interest of racial harmony but the annual Thaipusam needs to be celebrated in relative silence as it affects people.

    Are these festival less Singaporean? Something to be tolerated but not taken to heart? Malays very evidently and Indians historically have been on this island for as long.

    My mother is 4th generation Singaporean. My staple diet is bak chor mee. Our culture is a fusion from across the races and religions. We believe some things are pantang and others are heng.

    To me, the Singaporean identity is a mix of all the races. We belong to this island as much as the next person. So, I would like to be treated to the same courtesies and the same sense of belonging please.
