Dr Tan Cheng Bock: I Agree With Lee Hsien Loong On The Qualities Of Ideal Candidate

Last night PM Lee was asked this question

Q: Who would be the ideal candidate for you for the next Elected President?

PM Lee: Somebody who can identify with all Singaporeans, whom all Singaporeans will look up to, respect, and at the same time, have the experience and the weight and the judgement to look at what the Government is putting up to them, and to say yes, or no, depending on whether or not it is the wise thing to do. You need the experience, you need the personality.

You also need that trust which people must build up in you, so when you say, I have made this decision after consulting my conscience and consulting wise people, it carries weight and people respect you and they feel proud to be Singaporean. That’s what we want.

I am in full agreement with PM.

Chee Soon Juan: PAP Running Scared, Doesn’t Want Genuine Political Contest

I have often pointed out that the PAP is never sincere in ensuring that there is genuine political contestation, it always raises the bar just when its opponents come close to beating it at its own game (think GRC, Cooling-off Day, Public Order Act, etc).

The most recent example is the tweaking of the EP. Ostensibly, it is to ensure minority representation in the presidency. The reality is that alarm bells went off when Dr Tony Tan won by just 0.34%-point over Dr Tan Cheng Bock.

As usual, the government goes through the exercise of conducting a “study” of the issue. “Expert” views are then sought to substantiate the recommendations in the study. http://www.todayonline.com/…/mixed-race-teams-presidential-…

The process goes like this. Step 1: Frame the issue, set the parameters. Step 2: Gin up debate in the local media and through various panels (within prescribed parameters, of course). Step 3: Legislate it.

Much time, effort and money is expended to legitimise a course of action on which the PAP has already decided. Remember the discussions about whether to have 9 or 12 NCMP seats or 3- or 6-member GRCs or which race Singaporeans prefer their presidents?

As Noam Chomsky points out: “The smart way to keep people passive and obedient is to strictly limit the spectrum of acceptable opinion, but allow very lively debate within that spectrum.”

What is troubling in this instance is that at a time when our country faces complex and enormous challenges – challenges where open and intelligent debate is so desperately needed – the PAP devices yet another scheme to further control the political process.

There is a price, a steep one, to pay for all this.

Dr Tan Cheng Bock: Vote Wisely – Listen To All Parties, Examine Their Policies And Records

    How do l vote?

My GRC Holland-Bukit Timah is being contested by two formidable teams. The incumbent team of the PAP won the last contest with 60.1%. The SDP is fielding a new team with Dr Chee Soon Juan, Professor Paul Tambyah, Sidek Mallek and Chong Wei Fung. I have friends on both teams, but there are bigger national issues to consider.

Last night, the team from the SDP did a walkabout around my area and came to my house. They shared their vision for Singapore and asked for my vote. I listened carefully to what they had to say and will continue to think it through over the next week. Today, I plan to attend their rally to learn more about the candidates.

In fact l just came back from the SDP rally at Chua Chu Kang Stadium where l shook hands with some SDP candidates. At the rally many Singaporeans were happy to see me and many took photos with me.

I look forward to meeting the candidates from the PAP (Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Christopher de Souza, Liang Eng Hwa and Sim Ann) as well and likewise, I will attend the PAP rally tomorrow evening .

We should make an effort to listen to all parties and attend their rallies – closely examining their policies and their records. We are looking for candidates who will speak up for us in Parliament. A lot is at stake for future generations. Let us vote wisely and carefully.
