30 Year Old Trainee Teacher, Yusrina Ya’akob, Is First Ever Female Malay Singaporean To Reach Everest’s Summit

Trainee teacher Yusrina Ya’akob has become the first Singaporean to summit Mount Everest this year after she reached the top of the world’s highest mountain on Monday (May 22), expedition company Everquest Expeditions confirmed.

The 30-year-old successfully climbed a dizzying height of 8,848m above sea level at 9.40am on Monday, after more than 50 days of trekking.

For Ms Yusrina, the feat is especially sweet after her failed attempt to summit Everest in 2015, which was meant to commemorate Singapore’s 50th year of independence. She was one of the leading members of the Aluminaid Team Singapura Everest 2015 which had to abandon the climb halfway following a powerful earthquake that struck Nepal.

For this year’s attempt, Ms Yusrina teamed up with Singaporean climbers Jeremy Tong and Dr Arjunan Saravana Pillai. The trio’s expedition is supported by Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and the National Institute of Education (NIE).

Mr Tong and Dr Saravana, who were both attempting to summit Everest for the first time, were unable to reach the top as they were both unwell.

Ms Yusrina started her summit push from Everest’s base camp last Thursday and reached the top one day ahead of schedule after taking advantage of good weather conditions.

Before her latest expedition, Ms Yusrina told Channel NewsAsia that she embarked on this second attempt because she wanted to “face the mountain again”.

“I would not have been able to get over it (the disappointment) if I did not try again … because the situation that forced us to abort our expedition was not because of a lack of ability but a natural disaster,” she added.

With her triumph, Ms Yusrina has become the first female Malay Singaporean to conquer Everest.

Editor’s note: The article originally stated that Ms Yusrina was the first Singaporean to summit Mount Everest since 2009. This was wrong. Pilot Felix Tan had conquered the mountain last May. We apologise for the error.

  • Video: Northbrooks Secondary Teacher Used Vulgarity In Class

Video: Northbrooks Secondary Teacher Used Vulgarity In Class

The video of a Northbrooks secondary school teacher using the words cheebye or cibai when she disciplined her student has gone viral in Singapore. The teacher lost control of the situation and was raising her voice back at the rude student, eventually resorting to vulgarities to talk down the student.

While the student may be the first to use the vulgarity on the teacher, the teacher should not have used the vulgarity cibai back on the student. When she did so, the rest of the class were visibly amused and laughing out loud to see their teacher lose control and use vulgar language back to the student. They took a snapchat video of the whole incident and posted it online.

According to the video source, it was claimed that the school had told the girl who was scolded to request the video-taker to not post the video online to avoid drawing attention to the unsavoury incident.

The Ministry of Education has yet to comment on this latest incident.

  • Jadi Cikgu, Jangan Sombong Dengan Makcik Cleaner

Jadi Cikgu, Jangan Sombong Dengan Makcik Cleaner

    Soalan pertama aku tanya,

” Akak ada anak sekolah tak? ”

Seronok sangat mereka.

Nak jadi cerita, hari Khamis minggu lepas, masa aku mengajar kelas 1 Arif, seorang guru perempuan dari kelas tahun 1 Amal datang buat muka Nobita nak minta barang dengan Doraemon. Macam yang aku agak, dia cakap,

” Fadli, Fadli. Tolong jap. Ada masalah kat tandas. Murid tu… ”

” Kenapa dengan murid pula? Berak dalam seluar ke?” Soal aku bila dia bagi ayat tergantung.

” Tak, awak pergi tengoklah,” balas cikgu tu penuh harapan.

Bila orang minta tolong, takkan nak tolak kan? Cikgu perempuan lawa pula tu yang minta tolong. Alangkan Batman tengah makan nasi pun bila nampak polis suluh lambang dia kat langit dia terus pergi.

Siap keluar tandas lagi. Seluar dah kat lantai. Bau busuk najis menerjah rongga. Sambil tutup hidung aku tanya la,

” Awak dah kenapa? Takkan dah tahun 1 tak pandai nak basuh berak lagi?”

” Pandai cikgu, tapi tak ada air la,” jawab budak tu cemas.

Ah sudah. Aku mundar mandir cari baldi dan cebuk. Mana nak cekau tak tahu la. Mak cik cleaner nampak aku keresahan terus tegur,

    ” Kenapa cikgu?”

” Budak ni berak kak. Tapi tak ada air.”

” Tak apa cikgu, saya pergi ambil baldi dan cebuk, nanti saya ambil air kat paip kantin bawa ke tandas. Kat kantin ada air. Saya uruskan, cikgu pergi la mengajar,” terus mak cik cleaner tawar pertolongan.

Setelah aku ucap terima kasih banyak-banyak, terus aku masuk kelas. Budak-budak, macam tu lah.

Kau kalau cikgu ke, kerja opis ke, manager paling berkuasa kat planet bumi ke, jumpa cleaner, tegur-tegurlah. Jumpa orang bawah, jumpa kuli, senyum-senyumlah. Jangan sombong sangat dengan pangkat ni.

Mana tahu kau tengah berak pula air tak ada. Puas la kau terpekik terlolong kat dalam tandas tu. Kalau kau sombong, cleaner dengar pun dia cepat-cepat lari. Takkan kau nak wasap bini kau kat rumah suruh hantar baldi dan cebok?

Penyudahnya, lap la bontot kau dengan spender kau tu. Padan muka kau, siapa suruh sombong sangat.
