Malaysian Celebrity Criticises Racist Stereotyping Question In Moral Examination

A primary school was today criticised by a celebrity over its decision to typecast the country’s ethnicities in a moral examination question.

In a post on the Instagram photo-sharing service, actress Sarah Lian shared a picture of a moral test paper apparently from a national school in Petaling Jaya that asked students to associate names to different houses of worship.

The names were Devi, Hock Lee, Kamal, and Steve. Students were required to write the appropriate name under pictures of a church, a Hindu temple, a Chinese temple, and a mosque.

In the photograph, the student — a daughter of Lian’s friend — linked Devi to the church, Steve to the Hindu temple, Kamal to the Chinese temple, and Hock Lee to the mosque.

The examiner marked all four answers as wrong.

“My friend’s 7yr old daughter apparently scored badly. And you wonder who makes kids racist and stereotypical???

“Well, here’s your answer! A horrible approach to stereotyping people into names races and religions. I’m so furious at this form of racism. How archaic and racist! This is so sad! #shame,” Lian wrote on her Instagram post.

Malaysian naming conventions, particularly the patronymic system used for Malay names, are regularly used to infer a person’s religious identity.

Such assumptions have led to problems, particularly in East Malaysia, where non-Muslim natives who use “bin” and “binti” are sometimes wrongly documented as Muslims by authorities.

  • Roast Pork Smell From Temple Dinner Too Unbearable For Fasting HDB Resident

Roast Pork Smell From Temple Dinner Too Unbearable For Fasting HDB Resident

A Singaporean man named Sazali (https://www.facebook.com/Sazali10) ranted on his Facebook after food smells from a Chinese temple became too unbearable for him and his family. He spotted the food caterer for the temple dinner roasting BBQ pork at the HDB common areas under the kitchen windows where his clothes were hung out to dry. Despite shutting his windows tight, the smell became too unbearable for him to break fast properly during this month of Ramadan.

Below are his Facebook updates in chronological order.

    (23 June 2016 6.41PM)

“Can anyone share with me if this is permitted…??!! To roast pork in open & under the kitchen windows where we hang our clothes out to dry..

I dun mean to be rude but The smell now is so nauseating for me…even after i shut tight my windows. Hopefully the other muslims who fast in my block dun feel the same.

I think there is a dinner event going on at the open car park behind my blk.”

    (23 June 2016 7.39PM)

“Now am waiting for NEA officers to arrive since 1855hrs approx…the nauseating taste really made me lose appetite to break fast properly…

Then, I just realised they also had roasted at another spot…at residence drop off point…”

    (23 June 2016 9.29PM)

“Called up NEA direct & being told that they will refer & report it to the town council as the event is approved by them…so please Ang Mo Kio Town Council, i wonder what ur actions will be.

MUIS, is this ok for us….?? So, battling the smell & nausea, for me assisting the investigations, if any, i went down to take pics for their perusal.

I am not the type of person to go around complaining but roasting pork in the open & directly under my nose (my unit i mean), i think it is disrespecting for us Fasting in this holy month of ours. Now, the stench is stuck in my home affecting me if not others.”

  • New Tender Called For Sengkang Columbarium Site

New Tender Called For Sengkang Columbarium Site

A new tender has been called at the Sengkang site originally awarded to a commerical firm to build a Chinese temple housing a columbarium.

An outcry from residents in the area had led the authorities to terminate the project.

On Tuesday, the Housing and Development Board (HDB) put up a tender notice for the site at Fernvale Link for the development of a Chinese temple.

The site, which has an area of 2,000 sq m, will be leased for a term of 30 years.

The Ministry of National Development (MND) had said in May that the land would be released for re-tender when it signed a mutual termination agreement with Eternal Pure Land, the company which had secured the original bid.

Tender documents uploaded on the HDB website showed that provisions had been put in place to allow only religious groups to bid for the land.

“To qualify for participation in this Tender, the Tenderer must be established or constituted for the advancement of religion,” said the documents.

For-profit companies have been excluded from the tender. Only registered societies, charities and non-profit companies can qualify.

The tender closes on Aug 4.

The previous tender had been awarded to Eternal Pure Land, a commercial company that planned to build a temple and commercial columbarium on the land.

After residents in Build-To-Order flats around the development complained about the land going to a commercial entity, MND terminated the previous tender agreement, and refunded the company the $5.2 million it had paid for the land.

The ministry also released a small plot of land along Tampines Road, zoned for cemetery use, to the company for a “pilot project” for columbarium services.

  • PRC Tourist Hit By SBS Bus Along Serangoon Road

PRC Tourist Hit By SBS Bus Along Serangoon Road

A 56-year-old tourist was hit by an SBS bus outside the Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple along Serangoon Road on Monday (June 22) afternoon.

Eyewitnesses told The Straits Times that the man, who is believed to be from China, had been trying to take a better picture of the temple and stepped out onto the road unknowingly.

He was part of a larger tour group of about 40 who were visiting the temple as part of their sightseeing trip.

Urban planner Choo Meng Foo, 50, said he was talking to a temple staff by the entrance when he heard a bang, followed by several loud screams.

“I saw a woman chasing after the bus and shouting for it to stop. A man was lying on the ground and he was bleeding from his head,” said Mr Choo.

Large cracks were seen on the left side of the double-decker bus’ windscreen.

A police spokesman said a call informing them of an accident that had occurred along Serangoon Road after Belilios Road was received at 4.34pm on Monday.

The man, who was conscious, was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital for treatment.

    Police investigations are ongoing.

  • Wakaf Property Is Currently Being Occupied By Pu Guang Temple

Wakaf Property Is Currently Being Occupied By Pu Guang Temple

A wakaf property is currently used as a temple.

The wakaf of Haji Pitchay Meerah Hussain was designated to be a madrasah or Arabic school. Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS)is the administrator of the waqf.

It is now used as the Pu Guang Tang Temple.

Why is a wakaf property used as a temple? Are there no Muslim organisations that can use or rent the property?

It is supposed to be used as a madrasah.

A wakaf is a religious endowment. The person who created the wakaf hopes to gain ajr/ pahala through the use of the wakaf property. It is part of his service to Allah.

But this wakaf property is used as a temple with a shrine.

Edit: MUIS claim to have leased the property for 199 years in an asset migration exercise. The property will revert to MUIS in 2201.

According to MUIS, “The Fatwa Committee opined that it is permissible to sell the commercial or residential units on a leasehold basis. In essence the freehold property will still remain with or belong to the waqf…”

This means that the property “remain with” the wakaf. It is used as a temple.
