Resident Disappointed As WP Takes MacPherson SMC Challenge Lightly

    Dear Editor,

I would like to relate the sentiments of “Macphersonians”, having served and retired in this ward since the time of Encik Othman Eusofe to the useless Matthias Yao and the current embattled Tin Tin and her adventures with Rosemary.

I rejoiced initially when I heard WP is coming to contest here and Marine Parade GRC but this joy slowly turned to disappointment, yet again as my grassroot friends who are still serving in MacPherson were told to heave a sign of relief as WP only takes Marine Parade seriously and is plucking an unpopular feather weight candidate from the defunct Moulmein-Kallang as a token contest in MacPherson!

I wonder if anyone really cares about the welfare of MacPherson as we merely seem to be a pawn in the ball game of the bigger boys, be it the PAP, WP or even Nicole Seah Party. The latter pledged to still care for MacPherson with her crocodile tears and even made several empty promises which she never fulfilled before achieving her set out target for fame and glamour.

Tin Tin on the other hand, was sent here to tame GCT and gang into submission to LHL’s lieutenants as they understand the ground data well that her presence will not affect MacPherson (as many elderly are ignorant of social media) but a deliberate intent to pull down votes from the more affluent Serangoon, Geylang Serai and Kembangan-Chai Chee.

So now that after all targets are fulfilled, we are once again kicked out and left on our own when GCT threw a ruckus about his “legacy” in Joo Chiat Marine Parade being in tenterhooks should the WP choose to run in his constituency.

Now residents of both wards should carefully judge and put pressure on both parties if they are genuinely here for our long term interest or another round of tactical move on their political chessboard. If so, then I think we should look beyond a 2 party system as it is no longer working for the good of this country.

  • The Evolution Of Tin Pei Ling

The Evolution Of Tin Pei Ling

“My greatest regret is that I didn’t manage to bring my parents to Universal Studios.”

With those words, jaws dropped across the nation, and Tin Pei Ling, then 27, set herself on the path to becoming one of the most controversial personalities of General Election 2011.

A senior associate with Ernst & Young at the time, with a degree in psychology, the candidate for Marine Parade GRC seemed markedly different from the usual People’s Action Party (PAP) candidate. Voters were used to seeing standing for election former generals, scholars and civil servants who were typically mature individuals in their 30s and 40s.

Then came her first doorstop with the media, where she uttered those infamous words. Netizens began questioning her qualifications and wondered aloud if she had gotten in through her connections – she is married to Ng How Yue, former Principal Private Secretary to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and now Second Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Trade and Industry.

    Then this photo was unearthed:

This was the infamous image of Tin that drew much flak from online users last year. This was the infamous image of Tin that drew much flak from online users last year.

From that point on, there was no turning back.

Many netizens were convinced that Ms Tin was too immature and inexperienced. She lacked substance. She could not speak well. She was being parachuted into power by riding on the coat tails of former Prime Minister and then-Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong.

Perhaps even more crucially, she stood in stark contrast to one of her direct opponents: the National Solidarity Party’s (NSP’s) Nicole Seah, then 24. Attractive, composed and idealistic, Ms Seah had star power that Ms Tin simply could not match.

During an NSP rally, I personally witnessed the crowd booing the speaker before Ms Seah, urging him to get off the stage. When she had finished speaking and came to shake hands with supporters, one starstruck, middle-aged woman even told her: “Nicole, I will vote for you! You must fight for us in Parliament, okay!”

If there was such a thing as preferred youth candidate, it was Ms Seah. Some even called NSP the Nicole Seah Party.

All of which led to this memorable scene on Nomination Day, when the PAP team contesting Marine Parade came out to address supporters. Among my colleagues at the time, there were more than a few sniggers.

When the PAP eventually won in Marine Parade with more than 56% of the vote – a historically low margin of victory in the ward – SM Goh acknowledged that Ms Tin had played a significant role in the reduced percentage.

Outraged netizens even set up a Facebook page called Petition to Remove Tin Pei Ling as a MP. It attracted thousands of likes.

To her credit, a chastened looking Ms Tin addressed the criticisms directly, “I hope that I’ll be given this opportunity in the next five years to prove myself through my actions, serving the residents of MacPherson.”

But Ms Tin herself acknowledged that it would be an uphill task.

An unfortunately timed video a year later seemed to sum up the prevailing sentiments towards her:

In the years since 2011, Ms Tin looks to have thrown herself into the task of serving her constituency.

She is a full-time MP, and the comments on her Facebook page (more than 18,000 likes), once vitriolic, are now largely positive:

Other than the occasional naysayer on social media, there was also plenty of goodwill towards Ms Tin when she gave birth recently.

As evidenced from her Facebook page, she continued to serve even while heavily pregnant:

Senior Minister Emeritus Goh posted the first photo of the happy family, along with a promise:

How will Ms Tin fare this time round, especially as a candidate in her own right? We will just have to wait and see.

Tin Pei Ling Raring To Rejoin Team For Macpherson Battle

Member of Parliament (MP) Tin Pei Ling is raring to rejoin her team in gearing up for the contest in MacPherson in the upcoming General Election. Speaking exclusively to 938LIVE, she said she will nevertheless complete her one-month confinement period, after giving birth to a baby boy, Ng Kee Hau, on Aug 5.

Ms Tin said even now it is business as usual, as she is maintaining close contact with her team in the constituency.

“This is because I have put in place a great team. They know what to do. We have also worked out a system, be it communication or about getting work done, even as I’m taking my one-month confinement break, things are running as normal within MacPherson,” she said.

She hopes that the residents at MacPherson will understand her month-long absence. “(I) hope that residents will judge based on past experience, past work done, as well as looking ahead, I hope that they will continue to let me have this opportunity to serve them, continue the work that I’ve been delivering for them,” she said.

Ms Tin also said she is ready to face a contest in MacPherson. “My mission right from the beginning is to serve my residents, that has always been the case. So most part of my energy, my mental and physical energy, will be focusing on making sure that the day to day issues of my residents have been taken care of. MacPherson is well run, so whoever comes to contest in MacPherson, we will just roll with the punches and prepare accordingly,” she said. 938LIVE

  • Is HE Ting Ru WP’s Secret Weapon Against PAP’s Tin Pei Ling And NSP’s Kevryn Lim

Is HE Ting Ru WP’s Secret Weapon Against PAP’s Tin Pei Ling And NSP’s Kevryn Lim

Macpherson SMC looks set to become an interesting fighting ground for the upcoming Singapore General Election.

Not only is it one of the only constituencies which will see a multi-corner fight (People’s Action Party (PAP), National Solidarity Party (NSP) and Workers’ Party (WP) have all expressed interest to contest), it could potentially be a showdown of three beauties – Tin Pei Ling, 31, from PAP, Kevryn Lim, 26, from NSP, and now, He Ting Ru, 32, from WP.

Much has been written about Tin in GE 2011.

Most of the comments were negative and she was even given the dismissive nickname, “Kate Spade”, referring to a viral image of her showing off a Kate Spade handbag. Since then, she had worked very hard on the ground in Macpherson where she is the current MP and also earned her stripes in parliament by frequently fielding questions. The residents in Macpherson appear to connect well with her, especially the elderly. It will be foolish to write her off as a political lightweight for the coming election as she is very different from the newbie she was in 2011.

Tin has just given birth to a SG50 baby boy btw – congratulations to her and her lucky husband!

Kevryn Lim runs her own events company and is a one of the fresh new faces which the NSP is introducing for the coming election. Will the NSP be fielding Lim in Macpherson against Tin?

NSP has expressed their intent to contest in Macpherson. It’s a pity their biggest star in 2011, Nicole Seah, 28, had stated she would not be running in this election. As such, maybe Lim would be the next best choice for NSP to field against Seah’s perceived arch-nemesis in 2011, Tin Pei Ling.

Lim graduated from the Curtin University in Hong Kong with a Masters in Professional Communication. Prior to her graduate studies, she studied Fashion Design & Product Development at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She said in a recent media interview that she would like to champion transport and education issues if elected.

Lim has worked as a part-time model in her younger days and some of her racier photos have since surfaced, drawing criticism from the conservative public and lewd remarks from perverts. So far, she seems to be coping okay and taking things in strides.

He Ting Ru is a Cambridge-educated corporate lawyer who had lived and worked in several countries. She has recently been seen walking the ground in Macpherson with the WP team.

She joined the WP because she “strongly believe that all of us have to play our part in building the type of country we want.”

“Singapore needs to be a more balanced democracy. There should be no place for divisive politics. We are all Singaporeans who call this our home, no matter our differing views or beliefs. I hope we in the WP will be able to work together with Singaporeans to make this a reality.” Shared He in a interview with the WP Youth Wing.

Not much else is known about her as the WP is usually very tight-lipped about their strategies and also keep a close guard on the public image of their potential election candidates.

Will she be fielded in Macpherson against PAP’s Tin and NSP’s Lim?

Already, comparisons are coming fast and furious in the prolific EDMW forum, with many pointing out that He looks rather like local TV celebrity, Rui En from some angles:

Are you envious of the residents of Macpherson?

They may have not just two, but THREE BEAUTIES competing for their votes!

What do we have? We get the likes of Roy Ngerng, Goh Meng Seng and Lui Teck Yew.

If given a choice, who would you choose between the three to represent your voice in parliament?

  • Tin Pei Ling To Contest MacPherson SMC

Tin Pei Ling To Contest MacPherson SMC

The team sends Pei Ling and How Yue our heartiest congratulations on their newborn.

Mother looks radiant and baby (boy) ruddy. Father is, of course, happy.

Lest she is anxious, I passed the message from the Party that she will be fielded in MacPherson in coming GE.

I advised her to rest and not worry about the date of the GE.

She will not be there at the ND Parade but there will be time for her to turn up at Nomination, and campaign thereafter. — gct
