    Secret Beauty Pageant For Indonesia’s Transgender Women

    JAKARTA (AFP) – Crowds cheered on Friday (Nov 11) night as a group of Indonesian transgender women showed off glittering gowns in a beauty pageant held almost entirely in secret to avoid unwanted attention from hardliners in the Muslim-majority nation.

    Twenty-eight-year-old Pie Nabh Tappii won the title of Miss Transgender Indonesia, facing off competition from 18 other contestants.

    “I am happy, but I want to cry as well… I didn’t expect this,” Tappii told AFP after being crowned.

    In addition to the crown, Tappii’s prizes included 10 million rupiah (S$1,000) and a 2m-high trophy.

    The pageant in Jakarta was kept mostly under wraps, with just a handful of media invited as organisers warned cheering supporters not to share images of the event on social media as it unfolded, fearing the wrath of religious radicals.

    Hardliners in the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country have grown increasingly bold in recent years.

    They have halted a festival focusing on women’s issues and have targeted the Christian minority, seeking to close down churches and stop their community work.

    The Indonesian constitution officially recognises six different religions and most of its 255 million inhabitants practise a moderate form of Islam.

    But critics say the influence of fringe hardline groups, and the authorities’ unwillingness to tackle them for fear of being labelled anti-Islamic, has fuelled a dangerous increase in intolerance, including against the transgender community.

    The parade comes just a week after tens of thousands of Muslims protested in Jakarta against the city’s Christian governor, angered by allegations he insulted Islam.

    LGBT Community Given A Lot Of Public Space In Singapore, Why Pushing For More?

    Dear All Singapore Stuff,

    This is what I saw this Sunday on my MRT ride back home. Two men openly kissing on the train. Everyone was looking at them. I was kind enough to take the pic without a direct shot of the boy’s face.

    I respect everyone’s rights, but this is Simply Disgusting in a public space.

    What if my children saw this and asked “Mummy, why are the two men kissing?”

    Would I have to answer “It’s the same as normal love and marriage. The only difference is that one man opens his buttocks for the other man to put his private part inside but in the end, no babies come out. They only get AIDS”?!

    Is this another publicity stunt by the gay community?

    Most people in SG already know they exist but would prefer that they just go back inside the closet and stop seeking attention.

    Recently, Minister Chan Chun Sing bravely spoke out against public displays of homosexuality in Singapore. These were his words “I’m not going to discriminate … (You’re free to do) whatever you do behind your bedroom doors … It’s not my problem. I’m not a sex policeman … But if you tell everyone to champion pro-LGBT or anti-LGBT (causes), it (might) cause social divisions, so (I have to step in) to be the policeman in the middle.” (source: http://m.todayonline.com/singapore/chan-chun-sing-urges-youth-go-beyond-…)

    It seems that we really need sex policemen like Mr Chan and stricter laws to keep the urges of the gay community in check. The gay minority can do whatever they want in their bedroom but they should not be going around promoting the gay lifestyle and demanding for gay marriage. They can be gay but we have our right not to accept their behaviour in public. A vast majority of Singaporeans do not approve of gay marriage and are unlikely to change our minds anytime soon. Singapore should not degenerate into a free-for-all where gay men can brazenly go around wrecking young boys’ buttocks in the name of love, without fearing the consequences of their actions.

    Homosexuals should be thankful that they have their annual Pink Dot. We as the moral majority have already given them enough public space. What more do they want? Gay sex parties? Gay parades? To be able to teach kids about gay sex? Some of them are not contented with Pink Dot and intimacy in private. Instead, they want to flaunt their gayness in public and ‘confront’ normal heterosexual couples until they accept them as normal and see them as equally ‘married’. No, homosexual relationships are not normal and therefore will be never be equal to a real marriage between a man and a woman. We have to draw the line at some point. For many of us, life is not just about fulfilling sexual fetishes that are falsely attributed to genetics.

    Chezka, 26, was formerly a sex worker and is now an administrator for a new seafood outlet founded by a renowned actress. Her job scope includes socializing and interacting with the patrons of the outlet. She also comes up with ideas on how to increase the business’s exposure via social media. She is also the one who serves their signature dish. She has been working for them since they opened.

    This is my interview with her.

    Does being a transgender person affect your work and role as the administrator?

    My workplace is not particular about what gender you are or who you are. In fact, I have been accepted because of my personality and my talent. And I never experienced customers that dislike me. My workplace is situated in a family oriented place, I have seen kids, adolescents and adults. They treat me normally.

    You were a sex worker before this?

    Yes, I’m a former sex worker, only for a year plus. I went there (my sex work place) myself, I started alone. Yes, I work there because of the fast cash. 6 days a week, I can earn a thousand? I stop doing sex work because I don’t feel like I belong there. And also because I’m in a relationship, it can affect it. But after much consideration and a courageous boyfriend to stop me from doing sex work, I eventually start having a day job. Maybe one day I will go back to doing sex work, we will see how.

    Can you compare and describe your current job and sex work?

    Everyone wants to be their own boss. Nobody wants to be controlled.. No one like to be questioned “Hey what time you come work? End what time?”

    But doing something that is high income will actually lead one to spending more. That is when your budget goes haywire and all that. And so this day job allows me to focus on my budget and finances, and I can differentiate my needs and wants. Having a day job, I know how much my income will be. Even when I’m on MC or absent, I will still get paid. These are the benefits compared to sex work. As for sex work, your income is based on ‘luck’. If it happens to rain on that day, you won’t earn much.

    You may or may not want to share this. What’s your income like back then and now?

    Definitely the previous one is better. More or less it’s a drastic change. But only if you got luck, you will earn more doing sex work. So back then it’s not fixed, comparing to now I know how much my income will be. I can still survive with how much I’m paid. I might consider going back to sex work, if I’m tired of this job. Probably do sex work for a break before starting a new day job.

    Do you keep in touch with your clients?

    I do save their number. They do text me and ask if I still offer service but I didn’t reply them. Replying to them will distract me for my day job. Distraction cause harm.

    You did say your boyfriend is encouraging, in what other areas did he encourage you?

    Basically he wants me to respect him. He actually dislike me doing sex work, its like I’m not respecting him and our relationship. He don’t want to be questioned by his friends, if ever his friends know I do sex work.

    You don’t mind showing your face in the article… but many sex workers would rather not. Can you share a bit on why you don’t mind sharing?

    I am an open-minded individual and there is nothing to be embarrassed about when you are in the sex industry. Well, not many have the courage to be as honest as I am especially when you are telling the world “Hey, I am a sex worker!” I am who i am. After all, I am paid and I earn a living out from it. People may criticize me after reading this but one thing I would like to tell is, please have the audacity to tell straight to my face.

    Before we end this interview, any advice for your sex worker friends?

    Work smart! And play smart. In my interpretation, you work cause you want to earn money for a living. Don’t just work and be a brat. Meaning you work and get big amounts of money, then next day buy an expensive bag and brag to everyone. Grow up don’t just grow old.

    I don’t want to be homophobic or anything but I wish highlight a major hypocrisy in our system.

    I read that there is a Gay Cruise which will berth at Marina Bay Cruise Centre in April:

    This is outrageous, Singapore welcomes World largest Gay Cruise to Marina Bay Centre Cruises.

    The Penal Code 377A is against man to man sex, anal etc, yet we allow such a gay cruiseship to be berth in Singapore, and welcome 2000+ gays to visit and transit in Singapore.

    The government has repeatedly explained that they are not ready to repeal s377A despite a lot of support and a growing Pink Dot community.

    However, when commercial benefits are involved, such as in this cruise, they openly welcome thousands of people into Singapore even though they are likely to be breaking the law that the government refuses to repeal.

    If the government is saying that there are cultural issues and Singapore is conservative, that’s why we need 377A, how can we welcome such a huge group of people to come here who may conflict with that culture?

    Is it just for monetary gains, the govt allows such cruise chip to come via Marina Bay Cruise Centre.

    This isn’t really a debate about s377A but the hypocrisy is outstanding.

    Malaysian Engineer Convicted Of Sexual Offences Against 31 Boys In Singapore

    A 31-year-old Malaysian engineer has pleaded guilty to preying on 31 boys, aged between 11 and 15, over a three-year period, the Singapore’s Straits Times reported on Friday.

    Yap Weng Wah was reported to have befriended the boys on Facebook and used a number of different accounts to strike up friendship with them.

    Yap pleaded guilty to 12 charges of sexual penetration of a minor, the daily said. He faces another 64 charges of sexual offences.

    He managed to persuade 30 boys to have sex with him in his rented apartment, toilet cubicles in shopping centres and swimming complexes, hotel rooms and a public park between November 2009 and June 2012.

    He also recorded the sexual encounters on his mobile phone and compiled details, such as each boy’s name, age and year of meeting, in his laptop.

    Police found about 2,000 video clips in the laptop, the paper said.

    Yap was arrested in 2012 after one of the boys lodged a police report stating he had been sexually penetrated.

    But many of the boys continued to meet Yap after their first sexual act because he had become a “friend” or they feared being blackmailed.

    The case was adjourned on Friday and his sentence to be decided on a later date. Prosecutors are seeking at least 30 years’ jail and 24 strokes of the rotan.

    Yap moved to Singapore in 2009 and he reportedly tearfully addressed the judge, expressing remorse for his deeds and apologising to his victims and their families.
