  • Halal Subway Outlets In The UK Are ‘Way Ahead’ Of Singapore By 10,000 Years

Halal Subway Outlets In The UK Are ‘Way Ahead’ Of Singapore By 10,000 Years

Not trying to “potong stim” here but the UK has Halal Subway since long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long, time ago already.

“The HalalNews SG understands that the Subway delegation has held a formal meeting with MUIS officials at the end of 2017 to explain and clarify the aspirations and efforts they have made to meet all Halal MUIS certification requirements for all Subway branches in Singapore.”

This piece of news has been well received by the Muslim community in Singapore as previous attempts by the Singapore’s Muslim community to seek Subway’s consideration in making its stores Halal have failed

There was a petition titled “Make Subway Singapore Halal” by Shaik Syasya made about 2 years ago which garnered 130 signatures. “I love eating sandwiches esp subway. Its a hassle to commute to Johor just when u crave for Subway. So please make Subway Singapore halal,” someone said.

However it is not known why Subway Singapore took so long to start halal-certifying its stores. In United Kingdom (UK) where only 5.4% of its population is made up of Muslims (compared to Singapore’s 14.3% Muslim population), there’s about 10% of Subway outlets in the UK that are halal (202 out of 2000 Subway stores across UK). All Halal meats catered to Subway in the UK was certified by The Islamic Foundation of Ireland and surprisingly, the Central Islamic Committee of Thailand.

In 2010, Subway Singapore replied to its customers on Facebook:

    “Dear fans,

We would love to be able to go Halal and we have looked into it very seriously. As we grow, more and more of our suppliers are giving us Halal options but unfortunately not all of them. To go Halal would increase our operational costs significantly as we will not be able to participate in SUBWAY restaurants’ huge global supply chain. And we do not want to hurt any of our customers by increasing prices. We know many of our competitors are Halal, but our menu is a lot more diversified with a lot more ingredients making the shift a more difficult task. So – we hear you. We’ll keep working on it and will review the situation periodically, and hopefully be able to satisfy all our customers eventually.

    Subway Team”

Then again, there are currently around 2,000 Subway stores in the UK and Ireland, 202 of which are Halal stores selling only certified Halal meats. To be fair, the meats served at halal Subway stores have been produced to meet Subway stores high standards in taste, look and quality. The objective was to ensure the taste of the Halal products matched the taste of the Subway stores “Gold Standard” meats.

So why have Singaporeans been deprived of Halal Subway stores and who should the good people put the blame on? Consider the following:

    1) Subway Singapore giving lame excuses. 2) Inaction of local Muslim body MUIS. 3) Bad luck Singapore.

  • London Islamophobe Terrorist Was Born In Singapore

London Islamophobe Terrorist Was Born In Singapore

A 47-year-old man arrested for allegedly ploughing a van into a group of Muslims in London on Monday (June 19) was born in Singapore, according to British media reports.

Citing public records, the Guardian and Daily Mirror reported that Darren Osborne was born in Singapore in 1969. They gave no further details on his Singapore connection, or when he moved back to Britain.

Osborne is believed to have grown up in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, where he attended Broadoak Mathematics and Computing College.

At the time of the attack, he was living in the Welsh city of Cardiff with his partner and four children aged between five and 16.

Nine people were hospitalised after Monday’s attack. Witnesses said they saw Osborne shouting, “I want to kill all Muslims”, before slamming his van into a crowd near a mosque in the Finsbury Park area of London.

One elderly man, who had collapsed moments before the van appeared, was pronounced dead at the scene, although police have not yet confirmed whether he died as a result of the attack.

Locals held onto Osborne until he was detained by police and later arrested on charges of “the commission, preparation or instigation of terrorism including murder and attempted murder”.

His neighbours in Cardiff described him as “aggressive” and “strange”, The Guardian reported. They said it was unclear if he had a job, with some saying that he was unemployed while others said he bought and sold cars.

Neighbour Pauline Tibbs, 48, told the Mail Online that the incident had been a “terrible shock”.

“The police have been back and forth here all day. It’s a terrible shock,” she said. “I’ve seen him walking in the street but never spoken to him. He seemed normal enough. He has lived here a couple of years and kept himself to himself.”

Osborne’s next-door neighbor, Mr Khadijeh Sherizi, told The Telegraph: “I saw him on the news and I thought ‘Oh my God that is my neighbour.”

“He has been so normal. He was in his kitchen yesterday afternoon singing with his kids.

“He was the dad of the family. He has kids. He lives next door. He seemed polite and pleasant to me. I just can’t believDe it.”

Osborne’s family members revealed a different side of him.

Mrs Osborne, 72, told ITV News that her son was a “complex” person.

  • Attack On London Mosque: Terrorist Would’ve Have Died From Beating If Not For Imam’s Intervention

Attack On London Mosque: Terrorist Would’ve Have Died From Beating If Not For Imam’s Intervention

As angry bystanders held down the alleged driver of a van that ploughed into a group of Muslims near a mosque in London just after midnight yesterday, an imam helped calm the situation.

Imam Mohammed Mahmoud shouted: “Don’t touch him! No one touch him!”, reported The Telegraph.

“(The van driver) tried to run away but we brought him down. He would’ve died because so many people were punching him, but the imam came out and said ‘No more punching, let’s keep him down until the police come’,” one witness told the Independent.

A statement on the website of the Muslim Welfare House said: “I would like to particularly thank our imam, Mohammed Mahmoud, whose bravery and courage helped calm the immediate situation after the incident and prevented further injuries and potential loss of life.”

  • Youngest Victim Of Manchester Suicide Bombing Was 8 Years Old

Youngest Victim Of Manchester Suicide Bombing Was 8 Years Old

They came in their thousands, children with their parents, teenagers and adults also in the mix, excited at the prospect of watching a former child star all grown up with grand designs on pop superstardom.

It would not have crossed their minds that carnage lay in wait.

The suicide bomber could have hit a train station, restaurant or busy junction, but he chose former Nickelodeon child star Ariana Grande’s concert at the Manchester Arena on Monday night (early yesterday morning Singapore time).

The killer waited until the end of the concert and as people started streaming out to the foyer, he activated the bomb which some reports say was filled with metal parts.

The choice of location remains unclear, but some estimates said children and teens made up nearly 50 per cent of the audience of 21,000.

The result was devastating – 22 dead and at least 59 injured.

The youngest who died was eight. The first victim to be named was 18-year-old college student Georgina Callander from Lancashire.

The hashtag Missing in Manchester made for difficult reading.

“Everyone pls share this, my little sister Emma was at the Ari concert tonight in #Manchester and she isn’t answering her phone, pls help me,” said one message, posted alongside a picture of a blonde girl with flowers in her hair.

Another Twitter user called Erin:P urged people to help find the user’s sister. “She’s wearing a pink sweatshirt and blue jeans. Her name is Whitney.”

The Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) claimed responsibility for the attack.

British Home Secretary Amber Rudd said the Manchester explosion was a “barbaric attack, deliberately targeting some of the most vulnerable in our society”.

Mr Tim Farron, Britain’s Liberal Democrat leader said: “This is a shocking and horrific attack targeting children and young people who were simply enjoying a concert.”

In the hours after the blast, picture montages of smiling faces were being circulated of teens still unaccounted for after the concert.

    They carried the hashtag: “#PrayForManchester”.

Speaking to The New Paper, Associate Professor Kumar Ramakrishna, head of policy studies and coordinator of the National Security Studies Programme at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS), said: “The explosion has shown no mercy to young people and even children. This is similar to ISIS attacks in Syria and Iraq.”

Mr Andrin Raj, South-east Asia regional director for the International Association for Counter-Terrorism and Security Professionals, said ISIS does not discriminate (on the basis of) gender, race or age.

“The attacker himself could have been a young adult who may have got instruction to take out the infidels who are youth,” he said.

British Prime Minister Theresa May said yesterday police and security services knew the identity of the suspected suicide bomber, but the authorities were not ready to announce the name. She also said the attacker had carried out the attack alone.

Youngest victim in Manchester blast was eight years old

Ms Cheryl McDonald, who went to the concert with her nine-year-old daughter, told Sky: “I’ve never been so scared in my life. My daughter is very, very shocked”.

Ms McDonald broke down as she described a “devastating” scene, saying the venue was “full of children”.

Ms Paula Robinson, 48, was at the train station next to the arena with her husband when she felt the explosion and saw dozens of teenage girls screaming and running away from the arena.

“We ran out,” she told Reuters. “It was seconds after the explosion. I got the teens to run with me.”

Ms Robinson said she took dozens of teenage girls to a nearby hotel and tweeted her phone number to worried parents telling them to meet her there.

But Centre of Excellence for National Security research fellow Muhammad Faizal Abdul Rahman does not think that the terrorist was intentionally targeting young victims.

Rather, the attacker may have been drawn to Grande’s popularity, which would mean large crowds.

Mr Muhammad Faizal told The New Paper: “To be lethal, suicide bombers need to launch their attack at a crowded place to maximise casualties.”

The Manchester attack is the latest in a series of attacks that have traumatised Europe over the last few years, evoking memories of the attack in 2015 on the Bataclan concert venue in Paris, where gunmen mowed down rock fans.

It is Britain’s deadliest extremist attack in 12 years and comes just two months after a lone assailant left five people dead outside the Houses of Parliament in London.
