  • Disgusting Hygiene Conditions At Ang Mo Kio Giant Supermarket

Disgusting Hygiene Conditions At Ang Mo Kio Giant Supermarket

I saw your story on how a rat at their premises was ignored by Giant supermarket staff at Yishun. I have encountered bad hygiene conditions such as centipedes, flies, bee, other insects found at the premises and spoilt food items being sold at Giant located at Ang Mo Kio and have been informing NEA on this matter for the past two years.

Initially NEA claimed that they are taking this matter seriously but for the past few months, NEA has refused to take my complains seriously and told me that I should speak to Giant’s management directly on my concerns. I have spoken to Giant’s management before but they don’t seem too bothered about the lack of hygiene as when I return back to the store, I always see the same issues. I even tried speaking to the senior management of NEA and writing in to REACH to find out why NEA is not taking actions but NEA just don’t not want to clarify this matter thus I wonder why is NEA only acting as a middle man passing my complains to Giant instead of ensuring that they investigate and make sure that the public’s health is not endangered.

  • Kopitiam Foodcourt Employee Sacked After Filmed Scraping Dead Skin With Fruit Knife

Kopitiam Foodcourt Employee Sacked After Filmed Scraping Dead Skin With Fruit Knife

A food court employee caught on camera using a fruit knife to scrape dead skin off her hand has been sacked.

Personal assistant Renny, who is in her 30s, had filmed the incident while having lunch with her family at the Kopitiam food court in Sembawang’s Sun Plaza on Monday (July 27).

“I saw this disturbing scene of a woman working at the mixed vegetable rice stall – she was removing the dead skin cells from her hand with what looked like a knife used for food,” Renny, who is in her 30s, told The Straits Times after first alerting netizen website Stomp.

“This is so terrible and unhygienic.”

She claimed that the woman wiped the knife with a receipt instead of washing it, before putting it below the cash register.

A spokesman from Kopitiam, which operates more than 50 food courts in Singapore, said it had issued a warning letter to the stall’s tenant.

The tenant then dismissed the employee on Monday night.

After conducting its investigations, Kopitiam clarified that the knife in question was for the staff’s personal use. It was not used to prepare any food at the stall.

“Nevertheless, her behaviour was unacceptable and not in line with the high standards of hygiene Kopitiam sets at all its food outlets,” said the spokesman.

Monday’s incident was the second in a little over a month involving the food court operator. A video of one of its employees washing her shoes in a sink at its National University Hospital outlet went viral late last month.

The female employee was later sacked by Kopitiam, which runs the desserts and drink stalls at all its food courts. All other food stalls are leased to tenants.

The National Environment Agency (NEA) also said then that it would be taking action against Kopitiam for the “flagrant breach of hygiene that could have resulted in contamination of food and untensils”.

Kopitiam has assured customers that it conducts weekly inspections of all its outlets to ensure that staff and tenants abide by a stringent set of hygiene standards.

“While we are definitely concerned, both cases were isolated ones that happened due to personal lapses, rather than a lapse in our system,” added the spokesman.

The Straits Times has contacted NEA for comment.

  • Bags Of Raw Chicken Left Unattanded Outside Buffet City International Buffet Restaurant

Bags Of Raw Chicken Left Unattanded Outside Buffet City International Buffet Restaurant

Every morning around 8am, you can see bags of raw chicken left unattended, outside the door of Buffet City International Buffet Restaurant!  This restaurant is near Pinnacle@Duxton.

I took some pictures. The restaurant was still closed when I took them.  Look at this:

Buffet City Food Duxton 1 Buffet City Food Duxton 2

This is very unhygienic! What if stray animals or pests play around with the chicken?

The restaurant has to do something about this. It’s unfair for the patrons to eat food that was left outside like this. So unhygienic.

    Concerned Citizen

*Editor’s Note: When contacted, the restaurant indicated that it was aware of the situation and is working with its supplier to resolve the problem.  The supplier is facing a shortage in manpower in terms of drivers and deliverymen. With the shortage, the current driver, based on the planned delivery route, arrives earlier than the restaurant’s receiving timing. The restaurant pleads for understanding from the public and assures that it prioritises food hygiene.  All raw materials sent to the restaurant are also thoroughly washed before being cooked.
