Iraq Declares The Country Cleared Of ISIS Forces. Is This The End Of Them?

“Our forces are in complete control of the Iraqi-Syrian border and I therefore announce the end of the war against Daesh (ISIS),” Mr Abadi told a conference in Baghdad.

“Our enemy wanted to kill our civilisation, but we have won through our unity and our determination. We have triumphed in little time.”

As the authorities announced a public holiday yesterday “to celebrate the victory”, Mr Abadi said in a speech that Iraq’s next battle would be to defeat the scourge of corruption.

ISIS seized vast areas north and west of Baghdad in a lightning offensive in 2014.

Iraq’s fightback was backed by an air campaign waged by a US-led coalition.

The US State Department hailed the end of the jihadists’ “vile occupation” but cautioned that the fight was not over.

“The United States joins the Government of Iraq in stressing that Iraq’s liberation does not mean the fight against terrorism, and even against ISIS, in Iraq is over,” State Department spokesman Heather Nauert said.

Iraq’s close ally Iran already declared victory over ISIS last month, as the jihadists clung to just a few remaining scraps of territory.

But Mr Abadi said at the time he would not follow suit until the desert on the border with Syria had been cleared.

On the Syrian side of the border, ISIS is also under massive pressure. Last Thursday, Russia’s defence ministry said its mission in support of the Syrian regime to oust IS had been “accomplished” and the country was “completely liberated”.

Despite the victory announcements, experts have warned that ISIS retains the capacity as an insurgent group to carry out high-casualty bomb attacks using sleeper cells.

Other experts warned that ISIS fighters have shifted bases to war-torn Afghanistan.

  • Pergas Wrote Letter To Lee Hsien Loong, Expressed Concerns On Israeli-Palestine Conflict

Pergas Wrote Letter To Lee Hsien Loong, Expressed Concerns On Israeli-Palestine Conflict

The Singapore Islamic Scholars and Teachers Association (Pergas) has written to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong to highlight the Muslim community’s concerns about the “situation in Palestine”, saying the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict is “regrettable and worrying”.

The letter, written in Malay and dated 17 February, expressed Pergas’ hopes that Lee would bring up the matter during the two-day official visit to Singapore by Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, on Monday and Tuesday (20-21 February).

In the letter, the President of Pergas, Ustaz Hasbi Hassan, said, “Israel’s occupation has lowered the value of human lives. It has caused the lives of children, women and the elderly.

Pergas has expressed our concern and the Singapore Muslim aspiration to the Singapore government on the Palestine situation. Alhamdulillah, our concern has been conveyed by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong to the Israeli’s Prime Minister during his two-day Singapore visit earlier this week.

“The blockage and control of Gaza has ravished the basic human rights for protection, housing, health, education and more. The upholding of these rights has been agreed upon by the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), which urge Israel to stop illegal housing on Palestinian land,” he said in the letter.

Ustaz Hasbi stressed that as Muslims and citizens of Singapore, Pergas stands by the values of harmony and justice and, like any other community, rejects any form of tyranny, invasion and repression.

“Violence will only beget violence, and peace could never be achieved as long as discrimination, tyranny and repression still exist,” he said.

Pergas understands the Singapore government’s policy on such matters, which has been affirmed by the appointment of former Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Hawazi Daipi, as Singapore’s new non-resident representative to the Palestinian Territories. Hawazi assumed the position in November last year.

“We support the government’s policy and hope that Israel and Palestine can work together towards peace and harmony. We also hope that all forms of repression and violence will cease with justice prevailing for both parties,” Ustaz Hasbi said.

Prime Minister Lee’s reply to Pergas

In a letter addressed to Ustaz Hasbi dated Tuesday (21 February), Lee thanked Pergas for expressing its concerns about the situation in Palestine and the Israeli-Palestinian issue.

Lee said he fully understands these concerns. Singapore is friends with both Israel and the Palestinian National Authority, and many Arab countries, he added.

“While the situation is complex and progress is difficult, Singapore has always urged Israel and Palestine to resume direct negotiations and work towards a just and durable solution to this longstanding conflict,” Lee said in the letter.

Lee also reiterated Singapore’s position in the letter, saying that the Republic is convinced that “a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine, however hard to achieve, is the only way to bring peace and security to both peoples.”

The prime minister has stated Singapore’s position and concerns to Netanyahu during his visit here and last year. In the letter, Lee said he has explained to the Israelis that the Middle East matters to Singapore.

“People all over the world are seized with the Israeli-Palestinian issue, and with the plight of the civilians caught up in the conflict. For Muslim communities particularly, it is an emotional matter.

“Singapore is in Southeast Asia, surrounded by Muslim-majority countries. And we ourselves have a substantial Muslim population, who are an important part of our harmonious multi-ethnic population,” Lee said.

He added that “Singapore fervently hopes for peace between Israel and the Palestinians”, which will contribute to a more stable Middle East and a safer world.

“I thank you for supporting Singapore’s position, which reflects the interests of our nation,” Lee concluded in the letter.

  • Daniel Goh: Syonan Gallery Controversy A Good Exercise In Appreciating History

Daniel Goh: Syonan Gallery Controversy A Good Exercise In Appreciating History

Excellent resolution to the controversy. Both the inappropriate “Syonan” and the pretentious “Gallery” dropped. I think we would have been poorer without this controversy, so all’s well that ends well. I am reminded of what Shanice Lishan Foh said in the comments of my previous post on the misnaming, “hey this make us all think about our history”. I can’t agree more.

Shanice Lishan Foh: Finally more people are looking at the Old Ford factory! How many years have gone by and we have forgotten about this place ?

    Tell your kids :
We were name Syonan-to during the Japanese occupation because the Japanese name us like trophies… those 3 years 8 months were painful….

The British surrendered to Japanese forces on 15th February 1942 at the Old Ford factory…..we were helpless…

Are we going to let someone name us differently again ? NO !!
We will defend our country and homes ourselves !
    Majulah Singapore !

    *it is thought-provoking…
I read many comments… I was at 1st thinking why such an insensitive name ? Someone is going to be hurt real bad…
and then someone said about the crooked letter ” O ” in the syonan signage , hey this make us all think about our history….

  • Jufrie Mahmood: Allowing War Criminal To Visit Singapore A Sign Of PAP’s Arrogance

Jufrie Mahmood: Allowing War Criminal To Visit Singapore A Sign Of PAP’s Arrogance

ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF PAP ARROGANCE! In quick succession! Soon after insulting the sensivities of a majority of Singaporeans with their SYONAN Debacle the PAP continues to insult us by hosting and honouring a WAR CRIMINAL in the next couple of days.

This murderer of men, women and children who hails from a country that has poisoned the minds of Singapore leaders to regard our neighbours, especially those up north, as our sworn enemies, is setting his foot on this blessed land of ours.

It is also due to this poison that Malays are being discriminated and our loyalty to this nation being questioned for the past 5 decades. It is also due to this that we have to allocate billions and billions of dollars of our hard earned money year after to face imaginary enemies.

When will the PAP come to their senses that they have been conned big time?

A criminal with such a murderous record should never ever be allowed to step into this sacred land and given red carpet treatment at that. The PAP is so arrogant and insensitive to the feelings of decent human beings, thinking that they are now all too powerful that they can continue to thumb their nose to whoever disagrees with them.

Actually we Singaporeans are all brothers, ready to defend and give our lives for the nation. It is the Iraelis who have divided us by sowing distrust among us.

The racist PAP swallowed the Israeli poison hook, line and sinker.
