Calls To #BanAmericanSniper For Promoting Islamophobia

‘American Sniper’ will be released in Singapore cinemas on 22nd Jan 2015.

    American Sniper Poster

Directed by Clint Eastwood. The story of the late Chris Kyle a former Navy SEAL and the most successful sniper in US military history with 160 confirmed kills. The movie was released on 16th Jan in USA.

The movie has radicalized men and women and make them hate a particular race and religion.

Censorship board of Singapore, via the Ministry of Communications and Information and the Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs, must re-look at the repercussions in view of the current attack against ISLAM.

It will not be a surprise if more self-radicalised Singapore non-muslims born and bred here to terrorize Muslims.

Retaliation in defence is a calling.

MUIS Dan PERGAS: Nabi Muhammad SAW Harus Dijadikan Kayu Ukur Dalam Reaksi Kepada Insiden Charlie Hebdo

  • Yaacob Ibrahim: No Such Thing As Freedom Of Expression Without Limits

Yaacob Ibrahim: No Such Thing As Freedom Of Expression Without Limits

Communications and Information Minister Yaacob Ibrahim said he appreciates a decision by a local printer of The Economist not to reproduce a page with the latest cover of the Charlie Hebdo magazine depicting the Prophet Mohammed.

“We have no doubt that there’s no such thing as freedom of expression without limits. As I have said before, the right to speak freely and responsibly must come together,” Dr Yaacob said to the media on the sidelines of the JFDI.Asia Demo Day on Friday (Jan 16),

Dr Yaacob, who is also Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs said the circulation of the cartoons will not be allowed in Singapore. He later posted on Facebook that “there are longstanding laws against causing offence to our races and religions” in Singapore.

The page in the Singapore edition of The Economist was replaced with a statement informing readers that the magazine’s “Singapore printers” declined to print it. The magazine hit local newsstands on Friday.

“I think Singaporeans understand the sensitivities and we must continue to protect our racial, religious harmony. So I appreciate the sensitivities shown by the printer and I commend them for the decision,” said Dr Yaacob.

“All in all, it’s been a good outcome for us, because people understand that we must continue to work together to preserve the racial and religious harmony in Singapore,” he added.

Dr Yaacob said the Malay/Muslim community is “by and large offended” by the latest Charlie Hebdo cover. “But I think they also understood that we need to act rationally and I am quite impressed at how the community has come together to respond to this particular episode,” he said.

“But at the same time, we recognise that this may not be the last time that it will happen and we have continued to build up our resilience. And on our part we should also continue to try and spread the message of peace and tolerance across all communities here in Singapore.”

  • Yaacob Ibrahim: Greater Communication Required Between Communications Team And Policymakers

Yaacob Ibrahim: Greater Communication Required Between Communications Team And Policymakers

The Government recognises that there is room to simplify some of its policies, in order for people to understand them better. And this may require the communications departments to work more closely with policymakers.

Communications and Information Minister Yaacob Ibrahim shared this during a Question and Answer segment of a forum held at the National University of Singapore on Wednesday evening (Nov 26).

Dr Yaacob said there has been feedback that policies like the Pioneer Generation Package and MediShield Life are complex and some have asked if they can be simplified. But he also emphasised that the Government is dealing with complex issues such as an ageing society and the need for a universal medical scheme.

He said that the Government is working to get its communications and policy people to work together at an early stage to improve the way such policies are communicated.

Dr Yaacob also addressed concerns from the audience on data protection as Singapore moves towards its vision of becoming a Smart Nation. He said data is needed to become a Smart Nation and to come up with new services and policies, but that this will be protected and anonymised.

    LOCAL TELEVISION CONTENT

Dr Yaacob was also asked to comment on local television content and how it can be made more interesting for the Singapore audience. He said the Government has invested heavily in public service broadcasting, and – together with MediaCorp – is producing content that is relevant to Singaporeans.

He said: “We must give local content a chance. From the quality point of view, MediaCorp will have to ramp up its capability and produce good quality content, but accessibility is also important so that ordinary Singaporeans can see it and will want to watch it.

“But by and large, in the last few months, you can see the figures in terms of eyeballs watching local content is ramping up quite gently after a lot of effort on our part together with MediaCorp, because I think they are trying their very best.”

    ONLINE NEWS LICENSING SCHEME

Meanwhile, Dr Yaacob said the aim of the online news licensing scheme, also known as a Class Licence, which was introduced last year, was to give parity to online news sites and traditional news platforms.

While this brought about a lot of reactions, he said the move placed the online and traditional news sites on a more consistent regulatory basis.

Dr Yaacob said licensing does not affect the everyday operations of online news sites.

“They still enjoy the same level of freedom – under the same content standards found in the class licence. So really nothing has changed, but we recognise that because as news sites you are reporting on Singapore, traditional mainstream media is also reporting on Singapore and so therefore, we have to find parity between the two platforms,” he said.

Yaacob Ibrahim: Madrasah Harus Melahirkan Asatizah Serba Boleh
