Don’t Impose Secular Views On Religious Bodies

The statements by the National Council of Churches of Singapore and the local Roman Catholic Church regarding the “gay moment” in the Disney movie, Beauty And The Beast, are quite clearly meant as advisories to the leaders of their respective congregations and the parents there (Disney’s Beauty And The Beast given PG rating for ‘mild violence’; March 15).

But the statements were picked up and published by various media outlets.

Not unexpectedly, a number of netizens took offence and attacked and ridiculed these statements without considering the context.

We should not impose our secular views and opinions upon any religious body or organisation, out of respect for its religious belief and also out of respect for our Maintenance of Religious Harmony Act.

The various online alternative media outlets which mock religious beliefs and activities could be seen as making mischief.

They risk tearing the fragile fabric of religious harmony in Singapore.

I hope they can rein in their attacks before the situation gets out of control.

  • Nasi Lemak Lovers, Now You Can Have Your Nasi Lemak And Have Your Cake Too

Nasi Lemak Lovers, Now You Can Have Your Nasi Lemak And Have Your Cake Too

We all knew how crazy Malaysians were about nasi lemak when they made nasi lemak ice cream.

But now, someone has taken the race to ‘nasi lemak-ise’ different things to the next level, with the creation of nasi lemak cakes!

The combination, which sounds like a simultaneously bizarre and appetising prospect, was created by Tiana Kitchen, a home-based caterer based in the Kuala Lumpur area.

According to their Facebook page, the cake is made from aromatic rice infused with coconut milk and pandan leaves, topped with a layer of sambal as well as generous sprinklings of ‘ikan bilis’ (anchovies) and peanuts, and served with eggs and a ring of cucumber slices.

Like any other cake, customers can even choose their own toppings, which includes sambal sotong (cuttlefish), sambal prawn and sambal petai (bitter bean).

According to comment, the basic nasi lemak cake is being sold for RM58 (S$18.40), while a cake with any of the three toppings is RM78 (S$24.75).

It appears that the cake has been pretty well-received so far. The caterer has posted screenshots of testimonials from satisfied clients, with one calling the cake “awesome”.

It appears as though people are getting bored with standard chocolate cakes or cheesecakes, and are letting their creative juices flow by coming up with new, innovative flavours.

A restaurant in Jakarta, Indonesia has reported come up with something even weirder than nasi lemak cake: Indomie cake!

The cake is made out of actual Indomie (fried instant noodles), and is topped with sambal, corned beef and cheese, according to Coconuts Indonesia.

  • Taco Dendeng, A New Rising Food Star At Pasar Malams

Taco Dendeng, A New Rising Food Star At Pasar Malams

For the longest time, the Ramly burger has been the essential pasar malam (night market) food. But it seems like it is now facing some stiff competition.

To fully know what is challenging the Ramly burger’s supremacy, you have to know these:

    What is Dendeng?

Dendeng is an Indonesian delicacy of thinly sliced grilled meat marinated with sugar and spices. It is like bak kwa or jerky, except that the meat used is either chicken or beef.

    Taco Dendeng

Together, dendeng and taco make a great idea of a fusion dish – Taco Dendeng. It is a taco shell filled with a piece of dendeng, some cabbage and home-made salsa.

Created and sold by Dendeng Duo at pasar malams, Taco Dendeng combines the best of taco and dendeng.

This is what it looks like:

The brainchild of Nur Azhar Sulaiman, 32, and Qaliff Rahim, 28, the co-founders of Dendeng Duo, Taco Dendeng can also be customised with an eclectic range of sauces, such as nacho cheese, wasabi mayo, spicy garlic aioli, and even salted egg yolk.

Here’s how the dish is prepared:

    People are loving it.

It seems that this innovative new addition to pasar malam fare has really spiced up the scene and challenged the old Ramly burger order.

    Just look at these.

    Bagus lah, Dendeng Duo!

  • Expat From Melbourne: I Am Bleeding Money At Rapid Rate In Singapore

Expat From Melbourne: I Am Bleeding Money At Rapid Rate In Singapore

I think life is better outside Singapore under a certain income threshold, but life is pretty good here over a certain income threshold.

Apart from the lower tax rate, It is because there are a lot of convenience services here; foreign workers, excellent taxi services, to your door services for a whole bunch of services, etc. You can’t get a lot of this back home, even if you have money, because these services simply don’t exist.

Singapore though is remarkably safe and exceptionally clean, multi-cultural, and schooling here is fantastic – if not a bit too grades focused – so there and great things here regardless of income. Those factors combined with the lack of drinking and drug culture here, compared to where I come from, makes it ideal for raising kids.

I’m pretty happy to be here honestly. I just need to work out the local shortcuts to live a cheaper life.

I find I am bleeding money in SG at a rapid rate, more so than where I came from – Melbourne – which isn’t exactly cheap either. But I am starting to work out there’s two Singapore’s.

There’s the “cheap” Singapore where life isn’t actually that great (comparatively to where I am from) – the quality of life is better back in Australia I reckon for lower/middle income earners. Then there’s the expensive SG, which is incredibly convenient – life is better than Australia in this Singapore – but also very draining on the wallet.

There’s a big difference between the two. In Australia at least, the gap between the blue collar and white collar is no where as big as it is here. You can still have a pretty decent way of life if you’re a lower (not too low of course) income earner.

One noticeable difference here, especially for us exPats, is the heat. The heat I find forces you to do things indoors constantly, and most indoor places are basically shopping malls, which are designed to drain your wallet. Back home there’s way more outdoors things you can do with the family, that are free, far away from shopping malls, and vastly more comfortable… and owning a car is MUCH cheaper so you can get to these things cheaper and easier.

Example: Australia – 5 minutes walk to the park where you can play for a couple of hours – free. Here, if I want to take my kid to an indoor playground it’s $70 when you include taxis, entry fees, etc.
