Ilhan Fandi To Move To England To Further Football Education

The third son of Singapore legend Fandi Ahmad could well be headed to England next year to further his footballing development.

TODAY reported last month that Ilhan Fandi, 13, travelled to York to train with the i2i Football Academy, with a view to finding a suitable school for him. This will allow him to stay in England and join an English club’s academy in due time.

Fandi revealed yesterday that Ilhan, who trained daily there, is keen on a permanent return, even though he will be on his own.

“We just (wanted to) find out whether he can stay alone; he said he is quite happy to try,” said the 54-year-old on the sidelines of a TAG Heuer event at Wisma Atria. “The boys there were much bigger (than him), but he enjoyed it.

“He’s okay with it so far … We’ll see. The most important thing is that the education system there is good; we hope we can enrol him.”

Fandi added that a possible school has already been identified: The Queen Ethelburga’s College, which caters to ages 14 to 19 and offers a traditional curriculum that includes A-Level.

He explained that Ilhan has already taken an aptitude test at the college and the family is waiting for the results, but the earliest possible enrolment will be in September next year. In the meantime, Ilhan will continue his studies here.

Fandi is also looking to send Ilhan there for “seven to 10 days” during next year’s March holidays to allow him another chance to acclimatise.

“It’s still a long way (until September) and we don’t know whether he will change his mind,” he explained. “That’s why maybe next year … we’ll send him there (again), see how he feels; we don’t want him to be homesick, even though it’s a boarding school.”

He added that Ilhan is keen to follow in the footsteps of his elder brothers, Irfan and Ikhsan, who both spent time training and playing in Chile.

All four were present to grace yesterday’s event at Wisma Atria, held in conjunction with tomorrow’s Battle of Europe 2016 clash between England Masters and Germany Masters.

Secret Beauty Pageant For Indonesia’s Transgender Women

JAKARTA (AFP) – Crowds cheered on Friday (Nov 11) night as a group of Indonesian transgender women showed off glittering gowns in a beauty pageant held almost entirely in secret to avoid unwanted attention from hardliners in the Muslim-majority nation.

Twenty-eight-year-old Pie Nabh Tappii won the title of Miss Transgender Indonesia, facing off competition from 18 other contestants.

“I am happy, but I want to cry as well… I didn’t expect this,” Tappii told AFP after being crowned.

In addition to the crown, Tappii’s prizes included 10 million rupiah (S$1,000) and a 2m-high trophy.

The pageant in Jakarta was kept mostly under wraps, with just a handful of media invited as organisers warned cheering supporters not to share images of the event on social media as it unfolded, fearing the wrath of religious radicals.

Hardliners in the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country have grown increasingly bold in recent years.

They have halted a festival focusing on women’s issues and have targeted the Christian minority, seeking to close down churches and stop their community work.

The Indonesian constitution officially recognises six different religions and most of its 255 million inhabitants practise a moderate form of Islam.

But critics say the influence of fringe hardline groups, and the authorities’ unwillingness to tackle them for fear of being labelled anti-Islamic, has fuelled a dangerous increase in intolerance, including against the transgender community.

The parade comes just a week after tens of thousands of Muslims protested in Jakarta against the city’s Christian governor, angered by allegations he insulted Islam.

Yuna Tegas Kekal Di Amerika Di Sebalik Kebimbangan Tentang Sentimen Anti-Muslim

  • Faizal Tahir Perjelas Kontroversi Kulit Album; Dituduh “Iluminati, Murtad”

Faizal Tahir Perjelas Kontroversi Kulit Album; Dituduh “Iluminati, Murtad”

  • Nuradillah Zakbah – Meet The Singaporean Accidental Mediator Who Brought Peace Between An African American And PRC Family In France

Nuradillah Zakbah – Meet The Singaporean Accidental Mediator Who Brought Peace Between An African American And PRC Family In France

A Singaporean woman used her language skills to mediate a misunderstanding between an African American man and a group of Chinese tourists in France’s Charles de Gaulle airport on Saturday (Nov 5).

Ms Nuradillah Zakbah, 31, was in Paris for a seven-hour stopover, enroute to Portugal where she was attending a conference. She works as a creative technologist at an advertising agency.

She was in a queue at immigration in front of an African American tourist and a group of Chinese tourists when she heard a commotion behind her.

“As I turned around, this rather tall African American man made eye contact with me and said ‘Can you believe this? This group of people just called me a n**ger!’” she told The Straits Times.

The Chinese group, comprising of two men and three women, were puzzled as to why they were being scolded, and the two parties started quarrelling, she said.

“And a man I assumed to be the grandfather of the group was pointing his fingers and shouting back at the American man,” she added.

“That was when I realised that the Chinese tourists had said the word ‘that’ (na ge) in Mandarin a few times in their conversation, which sounds like the word ‘n**ger’. Therefore the American tourist might have misunderstood them.”

Ms Nuradillah, who is Malay, told The Straits Times she intervened on the “spur of the moment”.

“I had to explain to him (the American man) that he misunderstood – and had to explain to him that I understood a little bit of Mandarin to know that they were saying or pointing to ‘that thing’ (na ge) instead of calling him the derogatory term,” she told The Straits Times.

She also explained the misunderstanding to the Chinese group “in the best broken Mandarin” she could. She asked them to forgive him and move on from the situation.

After her intervention, both sides were slightly embarrassed and shook hands and apologised.

She also explained to an airport security guard in her “broken French” that the incident was just a misunderstanding.

Where did Ms Nuradillah pick up her language skills?

“I picked up Chinese from friends growing up, reading subtitles on Channel 8 dramas and also went to a basic Mandarin course at 18 – to prepare myself for the workforce back then,” she said.

Ms Nuradillah recounted the incident on her Facebook on Saturday and the post has since received numerous comments that praise her act

Through this episode, Ms Nuradillah also realised the importance of living in a multicultural society.

“I thought that it was just really cool to be able to help others out because I’m a Singaporean. That was the time that I was extremely thankful to have lived and grown up in a place that exposed me to a diversity of cultures and languages,” she said.
