  • Tharman Is Malay

    Tharman Is Malay

Singaporeans from all walks of life, who are race-blind, have come out to declare that Tharman Shanmugaratnam is Malay.

This after they believe race is a fluid concept, where a woman with Indian descent can become President in an election reserved for Malay candidates.

One Singaporean, Zuo Zhong Tong, said: “There is no doubt Tharman is Malay.”

“If there is one person who can be president of Singapore, it is Tharman.”

“He will unify the country and Singaporeans will stand tall and proud for once.”

However, other locals said by declaring Tharman as Malay, it will open a can of worms.

Another local, Ma Lai Ren, said: “If Tharman is Malay, then Tan Cheng Bock is also Malay.”

“But no, he is now Tan Cheng Blocked.”

    “So he is not Malay.”

At press time, most Singaporeans don’t care about the upcoming presidential election in September 2017 because it is not a real election.

    Trending: Hijab Cosplayers

After donning a blue Cinderella dress, Sind Yanti carefully arranges her pale yellow “hijab”, or traditional headscarf, into folds that resemble hair. She is among a growing number of young Muslim women in Southeast Asia who are taking part in “hijab” costume play, finding creative ways to incorporate the head covering into colourful fantasy costumes. Yanti’s fashions are inspired by Disney and Japanese anime characters, with artful hijab designs that resemble wigs or hoods. She can express herself while preserving the Islamic requirement of modest dress for women, Yanti said. Her made-to-order designs cost between 250,000 rupiah (US$18.79) and 500,000 rupiah each.

The fashion play is also popular in neighbouring Muslim-majority Malaysia, where young people dressed as superheroes, warriors and princesses flocked to a cosplay show in Kuala Lumpur, the capital. Among them was 20-year-old film student Nursyamimi Minhalia, who wore a black hijab cut to form a fringe with two buns on either side. She did not include the hijab when she began cosplaying in 2012, but was later inspired by others wearing the headscarf.

Costumed roleplay, which can feature revealing outfits and elaborate hair styles, has long been part of the fan culture linked to anime and comics. Hijab cosplay is a new phenomenon that appears to be growing in appeal among the wider Muslim community. Sharifah Maznah Syed Mohd, 48, whose son is an avid cosplayer, said the role-playing hobby was acceptable as long as participants stuck within religious boundaries. Yanti says hijab cosplay has helped her stay true to her faith even while enjoying the cosplay experience.

  • Women’s Wing Of Malaysia’s Parti Amanah Negara Calls For Airwave Ban On Despacito

Women’s Wing Of Malaysia’s Parti Amanah Negara Calls For Airwave Ban On Despacito

The women’s wing of Malaysia’s Islamist party Parti Amanah Negara has called on radio stations in the country to stop playing Despacito, the Spanish hit song, because of its supposedly sexually explicit lyrics.

Despacito is a single by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi and Puerto Rican rapper Daddy Yankee that features Justin Bieber. The song has reached the top position in weekly charts all over the world, including in Malaysia.

Angkatan Wanita Amanah Nasional (Awan)’s Arts and Culture chairperson Atriza Umar said that she viewed it seriously as many young children were singing the song without actually understanding its lyrics.

She said that local Malay radio stations were also playing the song resulting in it becoming a phenomenon that was hard to stop.

She hoped that Despacito and other songs that have sexual and violent lyrics not suited to Eastern culture and Islam could be banned from being played.

“I regret that these problematic songs are not censored by the ministries responsible,” she said in a statement on Wednesday (July 19).

She also praised the artistes and individuals who have taken the initiative to alter the lyrics of the song to make them more decent despite it going against copyright rules.

Atriza also hoped that local artistes could work together to provide entertainment that was morally upright and yet had high commercial value.

“We respect the right to be entertained but there should be clearer guidelines so that the entertainment does not spoil people but make them better,” she said.

Amanah is a splinter party of the other opposition Islamist party, Parti Islam SeMalaysia. It is one of the members of the Pakatan Harapan opposition alliance.

According to the Billboard music chart, Despacito has led the Billboard Hot 100 chart (dated July 29) for a landmark 10th week.

On Wednesday, Billboard said that since its release in January, the song has garnered more than 4.6 billion streams across all platforms, setting a record for the most-streamed song of all time.

  • Celebrity Judges: The Voice Singapore, Malaysia Must Embrace Diversity

Celebrity Judges: The Voice Singapore, Malaysia Must Embrace Diversity

The celebrity judges of the inaugural Singapore/Malaysia edition of reality singing show The Voice agree that in future, the show should consider lifting its Mandarin-speaking requirement.

At the show’s first press event held at Hotel Jen in Johor Baru on Tuesday (July 4) evening, Malaysian singer Gary Chaw, one of the four mentor-judges on the show, told The Straits Times that the show should “diversify”.

The 37-year-old said in a mix of English and Mandarin: “This is just the first season, but going forward, perhaps the producers could work out something with the franchise rights holder where the show could work in many languages.

“After all, Singapore and Malaysia are multi-racial countries, and so we should diversify.”

The producer of the show, mm2 Entertainment, had told The Straits Times in May that it had acquired the format licence to produce the Singapore/Malaysia version of The Voice in Mandarin “based on the assessment that it is most commercially viable.”
