Former The Real Singapore Editors Open Ramen Stall In NUS

The two editors of former sociopolitical website The Real Singapore (TRS) are back in business – this time in the food and beverage industry.

The Straits Times understands that Yang Kaiheng, 26, and Ai Takagi, 22, are running ramen stalls in two food courts at the National University of Singapore (NUS).

Named the Takagi Ramen Shop (TRS), both outlets opened at the end of August and are located in the canteens of Prince George’s Park Residences and the university’s Bukit Timah Campus, near the Singapore Botanic Gardens.

A check on Takagi Ramen Shop’s social media accounts revealed that both stalls sell several variations of the popular Japanese-style noodles, including tonkotsu (pork broth) and miso ramen.

Prices range between $4.50 and $6.50.

The shop carries the tagline “Ramen for the Average Singaporean” and aspires to “bring authentic and quality Japanese ramen to Singapore food courts”.

Ms Kweh Leng Kiam, managing director of Pines Food Delight Pte Ltd, which manages both food courts, said that Yang’s mother first approached the company to rent the spaces at the end of June.

“I was told her daughter-in-law’s (Takagi) family owned a chain of ramen shops in Australia,” Ms Kweh, 48, told The Straits Times.

“After trying their ramen, I was impressed by the taste and quality of the ingredients that they used, and decided to give them the contract.

“It was only afterwards that I found out about their background, but it’s not a problem for me. They are making an honest living at the moment.”

Netizens on local forum Hardwarezone claimed to have spotted the pair cooking and helping out at both stalls.

Ms Kweh clarified that Takagi does not actually work there, but visits occasionally. Yang and his mother are in charge of running the business, she said.

Fourth-year NUS medical student Joey Soh, who had previously checked out the TRS stall at Prince George’s Park Residences, said it was quite popular with students and that there was a steady line of customers during his visit.

But having had to wait in line for 15 minutes for a bowl, he was disappointed with the quality. “It was not worth the wait – the broth was quite tasteless,” said the 24-year-old.

Yang, a Singaporean student, and his girlfriend Takagi, a Japanese-Australian law student from the University of Queensland, werecharged in April with seven counts of sedition for publishing articles that allegedly promoted ill will and hostility between difference races or classes in Singapore.

The maximum punishment under the Sedition Act is a $5,000 fine and three years’ jail on each charge.

The next pre-trial conference for the couple’s case is scheduled on Oct 1.

They are also facing a copyright infringement suit from Singapore Press Holdings, which alleges that content from its newspapers were reproduced on the TRS website without permission.

The site first came under the investigation of the police in February, over an article about an incident that occurred during the Hindu festival of Thaipusam on Feb 3.

Yang and Takagi were arrested on Feb 6 under the Sedition Act.

The Real Singapore’s operating licence was subsequently suspended by the Media Development Authority (MDA) at the beginning of May, and it was forced to shut down.

In its explanation for the unprecedented move, MDA said TRS had published material that was “objectionable on the grounds of public interest, public order and national harmony”.

It also noted that falsehoods were inserted in the site’s articles to make them more inflammatory, in a move it believed was deliberately used to increase traffic and advertising revenue.

  • Parenting Begins With The Light Of Rasulullah

Parenting Begins With The Light Of Rasulullah

    Salam Zulhijjah, everyone!

May Allah shower His blessings and love in this blessed month and help us in obedience. AMin.

    MashaALLAH.

It was a speechless experience learning with a mashaAllah Hubabah Umm Islam from Tarim, Yemen.

Nothing is happiness, except be with people who reminds us of Akhirah, of Rasulullah, and of Jannah.

Allow me to summarise a little of what we learnt, inshaAllah.

    May this little benefit.

    ===============

    Women & Parenting

    ===============

1.Parenting begins before marriage – so choose your spouse carefully.

2.Parenting begins during the intercourse – so always remember to recite the du’a: “”I am having relations in the name of Allah. O Allah save us from Satan and keep him away from the children You grant us”. The child that is born after the recitation of this dua will never be harmed by Satan.
    (Bukhari, Muslim)

3.Parenting begins at home – if you want the light of Rasulullah to enter your home, so take care of these 3:

    • TAHAJJUD = Wake them up, and let them play during tahajjud.
    • AZAN = Protect azan by be silent, and  reply the azan with an intention for Allah.
    • AURAH= If wewant to see and dream of Rasulullah, take care of our aurah even at home.

    EmilysQuotes.Com-amazing-great-inspirational-being-a-good-person-wisdom-Rumi

4.Parenting begins with Lafaz Jalalah – the word ALLAH.

    • Teach them to recite Surah Al-Ikhlas 10 times every day, because Allah will build a house for you in Jannah.
    • Teach them to recite “Subhanaallah Wabihamdih Subhanallahil Azimi Wabihamdih, because Allah will build a garden for you in Jannah.

    5. Parenting must be with a SMILE & SOFTNESS.

    4. Take care of time – In a hadith Qudsi, Rasulullah said, Allah said “There is 24 hours in a day. 20 hours I give it to you, 4 hours, make thime for me.” So, make our zikir more than our words.
    5. Depend our hearts only to Allah – Becasue Allah is wth those hearts who are broken.

Lawyer Eugene Thuraisingam To Defend 3 Charged In Thaipusam Case Pro Bono, Help By Donating

Lawyer Eugene Thuraisingam has taken the Thaipusam case to the High Court on behalf of 3 Tamil Hindus . He has undertaken this work pro bono, ie voluntarily and without payment.

Having interacted with him over this case, I am strucked by his professionalism, dedication and vast amount of time and resources spent on this case. He has even laid down $20,000 as security deposit in order to pursue this case as required by the High Court.

We hope Singaporeans, especially the Tamil community will rally behind and support this cause as the 3 men need to raise at least $30,000 to pursue this matter .

  • Singaporean Man Found Murdered In Malaysia

Singaporean Man Found Murdered In Malaysia

The body of a 52-year-old Singaporean was found off a highway in Bukit Kayu Hitam, Kedah, on Sunday morning.

At least 13 slash wounds were found on the man’s forehead, the back of his head, and arms.

The slash wounds on the victim’s head were so deep that his skull was visible and his head was almost hacked in half, reported Kwong Wah Daily.

Malaysian police discovered the body at 9.30am in a bushy area off the North-South Expressway near the Malaysia-Thailand border after receiving a tip-off from a member of the public.

The body was sent to Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar, Kedah, for a post-mortem.

Kedah Criminal Investigation Department (CID) chief, Assistant Commissioner Mohd Nashir Ya, told the New Straits Times (NST) that the man died from multiple knife wounds.

Police believe that the man, who was wearing a long sleeved shirt and trousers, died between six and 12 hours before he was found, reported NST.

Lianhe Wanbao reported that two police dogs and 30 policemen, including CID and forensics officers, were activated to comb the scene.

A cigarette box was also found at the scene and taken away for investigation. Aside from a mobile phone and a bunch of keys, no personal identification documents were found on the man’s body, reported The Star Online. Through the phone’s contents, police identified the dead man as a Singaporean Chinese, according to Lianhe Wanbao.

A police spokesman told Lianhe Wanbao that the victim’s family had been contacted and they identified the body yesterday afternoon.

Even though the victim is a Singaporean, police said the man had been staying in Hat Yai – a southern Thailand city near the Malaysian border – for many years.

The case is being investigated under the Penal Code for murder and no one has been arrested yet.
