20-Strong Squad Named In Young Lions SEA Games Squad

Young Lions Head Coach Aide Iskandar and his team on Wednesday (May 27) unveiled its 20-member football squad for the upcoming 28th SEA Games in Singapore.

“Congratulations to the players who have made the final 20,” he said. “However, they are aware that this is just the beginning of the final lap of their SEA Games journey, and that they have to remain focused and disciplined.”

Goalkeepers: Syazwan Buhari (CYL), Rudy Khairullah (CYL)

Defenders: Shakir Hamzah (CYL), Al-Qaasimy Rahman (CYL), Sheikh Abdul Hadi (CYL), Fadli Kamis (CYL), Amirul Adli (CYL), Ho Wai Loon (BK)

Midfielders: Faris Ramli (LNS), Safirul Sulaiman (CYL), Stanely Ng (HU), Anumanthan Mohan Kumar (CYL), Adam Swandi (CYL), Suria Prakash (CYL), Pravin Guanasagaran (CYL)

Forwards: Shahfiq Ghani (CYL), Sahil Suhaimi (LNS), Shamil Sharif (CYL), Irfan Fandi (CYL), Amy Recha Pristifana (CYL)

In the recent 2015 Malaysia FA Cup final, LionsXII players Faris Ramli and Sahil Suhaimi both slotted the ball into the net, contributing to Singapore’s first historic win in the competition.

The Young Lions squad was formed after an assessment of all 29 shortlisted players’ performances during the final phase of preparations, which included a centralised training stint at the Singapore Sports School, a week-long training tour of Japan, and the two friendly internationals against Laos Under-23 and Timor Leste U-23.

The nine players who did not make the cut are goalkeeper Fashah Iskandar, defenders Taufiq Muqminin, Zakir Samsudin and Nurullah Hussein, midfielders Shameer Aziq, Muhaimin Suhaimi, Christopher Van Huizen and Afiq Noor, and striker Iqbal Hussain.

In a news release from the Football Association of Singapore, Aide said it was tough deciding who to exclude from the squad.

“It was a very close call for the nine players who were dropped because competition for their positions was very tight,” he said.

Aide also thanked all of the players for the hard work, effort and commitment they had put into training.

“As a former player, I know how disappointing the news can be. I want to reassure them that it does not mean that their playing careers are over just because they did not make it to the SEA Games squad,” the former national skipper and defender added.

“They are still young, and have long playing careers ahead of them. In fact, some are still eligible for the next one or two editions of the SEA Games. All these players are also still part of the Young Lions family. We have invited them and their families to watch all our matches, and to cheer on their teammates.”

The Young Lions are grouped with the Philippines, Myanmar, Indonesia and Cambodia in the SEA Games. They will face the Philippines in their first match on Jun 1 at the Jalan Besar Stadium.

“We had a good final preparation phase which really helped to raise the fitness levels of the players, and the boys are now working hard to reach their peak. The team spirit is very good and the players are focused and raring to go for their opening group match against the Philippines,” said Aide.

  • Cobbler Jailed And Caned For Raping 13 Year Old God-daughter

Cobbler Jailed And Caned For Raping 13 Year Old God-daughter

Terence Ng Kean Meng, 43, has been sentenced to 14 years’ jail and 14 strokes of the cane Wednesday (May 27) for two counts of raping a 13-year-old schoolgirl and sexually penetrating her with his finger.

Two other charges were taken into consideration. The victim cannot be named as she is a minor.

Ng, a divorcee who owns a makeshift cobbler stall near Commonwealth MRT, first noticed the victim when she was loitering near his stall in October 2013.

After finding out that she had run away from home, he offered to take care for her as her godfather. He even went to the victim’s house to convince her then-ill mother to let him take care of the schoolgirl.

Although Ng’s defence lawyer Subir Singh Grewal said that the relationship between Ng and the victim started out as a platonic one, the prosecution led by Deputy Public Prosecutor Vikneswaran S/O Kumaran accused Ng of developing an attraction for the victim and having sexual thoughts about her.

Ng then proceeded to have consensual sex with the victim three times in the next five weeks after they first met.

On one occasion, Ng brought the victim to his flat. After the victim complained of stomach problems, Ng placed some ointment on her stomach. After she said she was feeling better from the ointment, Ng asked her if she wanted to have sexual intercourse. She said yes, and he proceeded to insert his finger into her vagina.

In this instance, Ng committed digital penetration on a minor, which is a form of sexual penetration.

Shortly after the instances of consensual sex, the victim’s mother died and the 13-year-old confided about Ng’s actions to someone at school. She was told to file a police report, and Ng was arrested four days after she did so.

Under Section 375 of the Penal Code, any man who has sexual intercourse with a woman under 14 years of age is liable to be convicted with statutory rape, with or without the woman’s consent.

A psychiatric report by Dr Jason Lee Kim Huat found Ng to not be suffering from any mental illness or intellectual disability. However, Ng’s defence said that the accused only had Primary 6 educational qualifications.

Ng’s mother filed a statement, saying that he was filial and helped to provide for the family, although he had lacked proper education. She said a psychiatric evaluation when Ng was 7 years old revealed he was behind his peers in terms of physical and mental development. However, the family did not have enough money to help rehabilitate Ng.

The defence also argued that there was no report indicating that the accused had paedophilic tendencies or that the victim had suffered any psychological trauma.

Ng could have been jailed for up to 20 years and liable to a fine or caning for each charge of statutory rape with a girl under the age of 14.

Jover Chew Among Five Arrested Over Sim Lim Square Cheating Cases

Five men related to the now-defunct Mobile Air, including its owner Jover Chew, were arrested yesterday over a series of cheating cases at Sim Lim Square, The Straits Times understands.

Police said that they had received several reports against Mobile Air last year for dishonest sales practices in which mobile phone customers were coerced into buying mobile phones and in-house warranties at inflated prices.

These victims ended up paying for the devices at much higher prices or had to pay fees to cancel the deal.

Mr Chew, 32, and his shop became infamous after videos were posted in November of a crying Vietnamese tourist begging staff at the shop to refund his money.

After the video went viral, online vigilantes posted Mr Chew’s personal details online, driving him out of the mall.

The five men arrested were between 31 and 38 years old. They are to appear in court tomorrow.

A 47-year-old man who sexually assaulted his daughter in 2012 and 2013 was jailed on Wednesday (May 27) for 13 years and given 12 strokes of the cane.

The man, who cannot be named to protect the victim’s identity, had touched his 12-year-old daughter’s vagina and violated her repeatedly in 2012.
