Dr Tan Cheng Bock: Don’t Be Afraid To Fight For What’s Right

    Happy National Day 2017

    Dear Singaporeans,
This year has been an eventful year for me. In all that I have done, I believe that it has been for the good of our country. I want future generations to be proud of Singapore and all its achievements. Let us have the courage to stand up for our convictions. Never be afraid to fight for what is right. We all want the best for our nation.

I look forward to celebrating National Day with my family and friends, and enjoying my grandchildren.

My family and I wish you all a Happy National Day.

53 Year Old Drone User Arrested At Marina Barrage

A 53-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday (Aug 9) after he was spotted flying a drone at Marina Barrage amid tighter security for this year’s National Day Parade (NDP).

A police spokesperson told TODAY that the man was seen flying his drone around 3pm at the Marina Barrage, which was within the special event area

He was arrested and had his drone seized. Investigations are in progress, the spokesperson added.

The floating platform where the NDP was held had been designated a special event area, and no one was allowed to carry or fly unmanned aerial vehicles, including drones, within the area without a valid permit.

To enforce the ban, the police and the Singapore Armed Forces deployed more personnel to patrol the area around the parade venue to look out for drone operators.

A drone radar system was also deployed to help to detect and track unauthorised drones flying in the parade area. Overall security measures were also increased.

  • Project Chulia Street Reminds Us That National Day Is Also About Caring For Migrants Who Help Built Singapore

Project Chulia Street Reminds Us That National Day Is Also About Caring For Migrants Who Help Built Singapore

Sometimes all it takes is a little child to say it like it is.

“I think my butterfly is very beautiful. And I think the uncles will like it.”

“The uncles worked very hard to build Changi Airport. And I want to say thank you.”

“Thank you uncle for the hard work!”

These children were part of a Project Chulia Street event for migrant workers at Westlite Woodlands dormitory. The children created gift bags, while the other members organised a carnival for the workers.

“A lot of what we have today was not built by Singaporeans alone. It was through these migrant workers, toiling under the hot sun. That’s why when we celebrate our nation building they should be part of this.”

    – Eva Lim Sng, co-founder of Project Chulia Street.

Amidst the terrible stories we hear of migrant worker abuse or mistreatment, this initiative by Project Chulia Street reminds us that a celebration of Singapore is not complete without the workers who build it.

Watch the video on Project Chulia Street’s initiative, produced by the Singapore Kindness Movement here.

By the way, Project Chulia Street derived its name from Chulia Street, which was home to the earliest immigrants from Southern India known by the name Chulia. That’s a bit of history for you!

  • Sultan Johor: Curved Design Of Proposed Rail Track Impractical

Sultan Johor: Curved Design Of Proposed Rail Track Impractical

The Sultan of Johor has spoken against the design of the proposed rail track linking Woodlands in Singapore and Bukit Chagar, Johor Bahru, and questioned the involvement of government-owned firm Prasarana Malaysia Bhd in the project.

“Why must it be Prasarana? Why not the Johor government?” asked Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar in an interview with New Straits Times today.

“The project is entirely in Johor; so why should Prasarana be involved? Let the Johor government and Singapore have a joint-venture and I can raise funds if need be.”

The rail track which includes a 30m-high bridge comes under the Rapid Transit System (RTS), the latest link to serve travellers who use the Causeway linking Malaysia and Singapore.

Both Prasarana and Singapore’s SMRT Corp are currently negotiating the joint venture.

Sultan Ibrahim said the design of the bridge was impractical, costly and would disrupt the state capital Johor Bahru’s skyline.

“The design matters to us and by ‘us’, I mean Johor,” he said.

He urged for a review of the whole design, saying the current curve-shaped design was not only costly but also impractical.

“Go back to the drawing board and review the overall plan.”

Sultan Ibrahim said he should be consulted for any project involving his state.

“Whatever (new plan) is presented to me, it will have to be logical, economical and sustainable for the benefit of not only Johoreans but all Malaysians and Singaporeans.”

During the interview, the ruler sketched a design, saying a straighter track which is closer to the Causeway was more practical.

“Why do they need an elevated bridge with up to 30m air draft (clearance height from water to a vessel’s height) unless there are plans to remove the Causeway?” he asked.
