  • Are Majority Malay Families Being Priced Out Of Geylang Serai By Expensive Hipster Fare?

Are Majority Malay Families Being Priced Out Of Geylang Serai By Expensive Hipster Fare?

And so yday before iftar, I brought my kids to Geylang just for them to get something which they want to eat before Ramadhan ends. We have yet to stepped in Geylang and maybe yday shall be the first and the last we went there Do not favour the atmosphere anymore

But what was most shocking is firstly, I gave them $50 to buy what they want to buy. Upon reaching home, I asked, how much they spent and my boy replied $40. The moment when they placed their food on the table, I began questioning the price of individual food coz I don’t see anything much on the table…coz I thought if it’s $40 then the table must be full right?

Mummy goes screaming when he pointed a plate of small Rainbow bagel with a meat in between that comes with curly fries and it cost him $15

Whattttt????!!!!! This is just Super crazy! And Mr Husband Faizal Kasiran says…”They sure know their target audience!” Haizzzzz…..

I am so disappointed. Very very disappointed…it’s not about the food and my boy but it’s just about the seller whose reaping lots of profit in this beautiful holy month

And yah….I just couldn’t get over it till now….so utterly upset

  • Why Didn’t PAP Malay MPs And Ministers Defend Perkampungan Melayu Geylang Serai From Being Demolished?

Why Didn’t PAP Malay MPs And Ministers Defend Perkampungan Melayu Geylang Serai From Being Demolished?

The house where LKY has stayed during his lifetime has so much interest that his son wanted to preserve it. Just one man.

Geylang Serai Perkampungan Melayu where the whole of the Malay Community gathers, conduct events, congregate, shops and walk, was demolished without any fun-fare. No secret committee set up. Nothing.

Not one of our Malay MPs stood up to preserve it.They even agreed to demolish it to make way for a new building.

We deserve the kind of leaders we vote for. The Malays are weak politically because we have emasculated leaders trying to score political points with the PAP at the expense of the community.

  • Pint-Clutching Man Becomes Symbol Of London’s Defiance Against Terrorism

Pint-Clutching Man Becomes Symbol Of London’s Defiance Against Terrorism

A man pictured calmly taking his pint of beer with him as other people fled past him during Saturday’s (Jun 3) deadly attack in London has been cast as an unlikely hero who encapsulates British humour and defiance.

Dressed in a red t-shirt and sauntering casually with a friend, the drinker stood out in Sky News footage of men and women running down Borough High Street, away from the London Bridge scene of the attack that left seven people dead and 48 injured.

The image spread like wildfire across Twitter and British newspapers said the man, whose identity is unknown, was a symbol of defiance.

“True symbol of the British spirit as man flees terrorist attack clutching his pint,” said student Henry Slesser (@HenrySlesser), on Twitter.

Others joked that it was only right that he should take his beer with him, given London’s notoriously high prices.

“Evacuate? Well, OK. But this beer cost six pounds (US$7.74) a pint. I’m taking it with me,” said another Twitter user, Andrew Brooks (@taxbod).

Londoners take pride in, and sometimes joke about, showing fortitude during adversity.

Tourist shops are awash with memorabilia emblazoned with “Keep calm and carry on”, a slogan drawn from a World War II poster that became popular in the last 10 years.

Saturday’s attack, in which three men drove a van into pedestrians on London Bridge before stabbing people in nearby bars and restaurants, occurred five days before a parliamentary election.

British Prime Minister Theresa May said the vote would go ahead as planned on Thursday.

Residents of the northern English city Manchester also looked to their city’s culture for solace after a suicide bombing at a pop concert killed 22 people and injured 116 nearly two weeks ago, Britain’s deadliest attack in almost 12 years.

  • How Can Indian-Muslim Halimah Yacob Run For EP Reserved For Malay Community?

How Can Indian-Muslim Halimah Yacob Run For EP Reserved For Malay Community?

Yesterday (1 Jun), ST published a news report stating that PAP MP and Speaker of Parliament, Halimah Yacob, is widely considered a front runner for the forthcoming Presidential Election.

It will be the first election reserved for candidates from the Malay community, following a recent review of the constitution.

According to the amended Singapore Constituion Section 19B, the Presidential Election will be reserved for a community if none of its members has held office of President for 5 or more consecutive terms.

“19B (1) An election for the office of President is reserved for a community if no person belonging to that community has held the office of President for any of the 5 most recent terms of office of the President.”

    Sub-Section (6) defines a community:

“(6) In this Article, “community” means —
    (a) the Chinese community;
    (b) the Malay community; or
    (c) the Indian or other minority communities;

    ‘person belonging to the Chinese community’ means any person who considers himself to be a member of the Chinese community and who is generally accepted as a member of the Chinese community by that community;
    ‘person belonging to the Malay community’ means any person, whether of the Malay race or otherwise, who considers himself to be a member of the Malay community and who is generally accepted as a member of the Malay community by that community;
‘person belonging to the Indian or other minority communities’ means any person of Indian origin who considers himself to be a member of the Indian community and who is generally accepted as a member of the Indian community by that community, or any person who belongs to any minority community other than the Malay or Indian community;”

Now, notice that in the case of Malay community, there is an addition clause added – “whether of the Malay race or otherwise”.

In other words, you don’t have to be a person of Malay race to be considered part of the Malay community. Persons of other race can also be considered part of the Malay community, presumably as long as he or she is a Muslim.

    Halimah is an Indian Muslim

Take Mdm Halimah for example, she is actually not a Malay as her father is of Indian origin.

This was disclosed in an ST article in 2013 when Halimah was selected to be the new Speaker of Parliament after the former one, Michael Palmer, resigned from politics due to his marital affair with a PA woman.
ST did a write-up to feature Halimah (‘A strong advocate for workers, women and minorities‘, Jan 2013):

In the article, it mentioned: “Her (Halimah’s) Indian-Muslim father was a watchman who died when she was eight years old.”

In fact, news of Halimah becoming Singapore’s first woman speaker also made its way to India. The Hindu described her as an “Indian-origin politician” (‘Indian-origin politician to be Singapore’s first woman speaker‘):

So, what all this means is that in the coming Presidential Election which is reserved for the Malay community, a non-Malay person who is a Muslim can also contest.

If Halimah, an Indian Muslim qualifies as part of the Malay community, then a Chinese Muslim, for example, can qualify too.

  • Philippines: Gunman Dead After Shooting At Resorts World Manila

Philippines: Gunman Dead After Shooting At Resorts World Manila

A man who fired shots inside a casino in the Philippine capital apparently killed himself on Friday (Jun 2), the national police chief said, after initially claiming police shot the assailant dead.

“The lone gunman is already neutralised. He is dead. He burned himself inside the hotel room,” police chief Ronald Dela Rosa told reporters outside.

“He lay down on the bed, covered himself with a thick blanket, apparently poured petrol on the blanket and burned himself.”

Dela Rosa made the comments about an hour after claiming in a television interview that police had shot the gunman dead.

“He’s dead. He was killed by our troops,” Dela Rosa had told the GMA television network.

Dela Rosa did not explain to reporters why he initially claimed police killed the man.

    LIKELY MOTIVE ROBBERY: POLICE

Earlier, people ran screaming out of Resorts World Manila, which is across a road from one of the main terminals of the Philippines’ international airport, after the gunman fired what police chief dela Rosa said was an M4 assault rifle.

“There hasn’t been anyone shot … there are only injuries from people who tried to escape in a stampede or from smoke,” Dela Rosa said on DZMM radio.

Officials said at least 30 people were hurt, some seriously, as they rushed to escape.

Police have said that the likely motive was robbery.

Dela Rosa said the gunman, who appeared to be acting alone, walked into one of the gambling rooms and fired the rifle at a large television screen then poured gasoline onto a gambling table and set it alight.

He said the man then fired again at a stock room containing gambling chips and filled a backpack with them. The man then left the room and went upstairs to a hotel section of the complex, according to dela Rosa.

Windows were smashed on the second floor of the complex just before daylight broke, but it was unclear why and by nearly 6am police did not report any breakthrough in the hunt for the gunman.

The Islamic State group immediately claimed responsibility.

IS said “lonewolf soldiers” from its group carried out the attack, according to the SITE Intelligence Group that monitors terrorist organisations.

But dela Rosa said: “We cannot attribute this to terrorism.” He said it may have just have been an attempted robbery, pointing out the gunman tried to steal the gambling chips.

    TERRIFIED

People inside the casino recounted feelings of terror when the shooting occurred.

“I was about to return to the second floor from my break when I saw people running. Some hotel guests said someone yelled ‘ISIS’,” Maricel Navaro, an employee of Resorts World, told DZMM radio.

“Guests were screaming. We went to the basement locker room and hid there. People were screaming, guests and employees were in panic,” Navaro said.

“When we smelled smoke, we decided to go for the exit in the carpark. That’s where we got out. Before we exited, we heard two gunshots and there was thick smoke on the ground floor.”

The local Pasay Chapter of the Philippine Red Cross said 25 people had been taken to hospital.

Jeri Ann Santiago, who works in the emergency room at the San Juan de Dios hospital, close to Resorts World, said 13 people were being treated, but more were on the way.

Most of the patients were suffering the effects of smoke inhalation and some had injuries such as fractures, she said, adding that none had gunshot wounds.

Local media reports said that police, fire trucks and a SWAT team were in the area.

Resorts World Manila is currently in lockdown following the reports of gunfire from unidentified men, the company said earlier on its Twitter account. It added that it was working closely with the Philippine National Police to ensure that all guests and employees were safe.

“We ask for your prayers during these difficult times,” it said.

ABS-CBN cited eyewitnesses saying that armed men, wearing masks and black shirts, fired shots and burned tables.

Another employee told GMA News said that five shots were fired from the third floor before they were told to leave the establishment.

Resorts World Manila chief operating officer Stephen Reilly subsequently told local journalists in a media conference: “We’re searching the area as much as we can, to make sure the building is clear.”

However Mr Reilly would not confirm how many gunmen were in the building, and said that he did not yet know of any reported injuries.

A casino worker from the third floor of the complex, named Julio, told DZMM radio he heard many gunshots and saw people running up the stairs from the second floor.

Ronald Romualdo, a maintenance worker at Resorts World, told the station he saw a woman fall from an upper floor while trying to escape. “Several people were injured,” he said.

Resorts World Manila is a popular tourist destination opposite Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3. It comprises hotels, a casino complex and a shopping mall.

The US State Department issued an alert for travellers to avoid the area.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte imposed martial law last week across the southern region of Mindanao to crush what he said was a rising threat of Islamic State there.

He declared martial law shortly after militants went on a rampage through the southern city of Marawi, which is about 800 kilometres south of Manila.

Security forces are still battling the militants in Marawi, and the clashes there have left at least 171 people dead.

Duterte said last week he may need to declare martial law across the rest of the country if the terrorism threat spread.

A Muslim separatist rebellion in the southern Philippines has killed more than 120,000 people since the 1970s.

The main Muslim rebel groups have signed accords with the government aimed at forging lasting peace, giving up their separatist ambitions in return for autonomy.

However a range of hardline militants groups have rejected the peace process and in recent years have sought to unite behind IS.
