  • Singapore High Commissioner Rebutted Utusan Malaysia’s Article On Elected Presidency And Claim That President Is Only “Symbolic”

Singapore High Commissioner Rebutted Utusan Malaysia’s Article On Elected Presidency And Claim That President Is Only “Symbolic”

The Republic’s High Commissioner to Malaysia has rebutted “false assertions” that Utusan Malaysia made in a recent commentary on Singapore’s Elected Presidency.

The article, which was published on Monday (Aug 14) in the Malay-language newspaper, described the Elected President’s role in Singapore as merely symbolic, and as such not something that the Malay community should be proud of, in spite of recently entrenched laws to guarantee minority representation.

In his letter sent to the newspaper on Thursday, Mr Vanu Gopala Menon said that the Singapore President, who is elected with a popular mandate, “plays key roles in nation-building and in ensuring good governance”.

The roles include serving as the symbol and unifier of a multi-racial Singapore, custodian of the country’s reserves and protector of the integrity of its public service, he explained.

The Utusan commentary was titled Berubahkah nasib kaum Melayu di Singapura? Presiden sekadar simbolik (Will the fate of Malays in Singapore change? President is only symbolic).

Noting that the Elected President’s post “has been dominated by non-Malays”, the commentary stated: “Perhaps it is because the non-Malays in Singapore have been given priority and advantages in whatever fields, that the Presidents concerned did not have to struggle to think about the fate of their own community.

It added: “As such, when a Malay holds the position of President, the direction that the Malay community is headed for will surely be given more attention, since the community has often regarded itself as being sidelined in its own country.”

In his letter, Mr Menon said: “It is incorrect to say that non-Malays in Singapore have been given ‘priority and advantages’. We certainly do not have a race-based system of benefits and patronage.” He noted that Singapore’s Malay community “has achieved significant social and economic progress within Singapore’s rules-based and meritocratic society”.

“We are, as a nation, proud of these accomplishments, and we will achieve further progress together.”

Mr Menon added: “Singapore will not tolerate the use of race or religion to promote ill-will between different segments of Singapore society, or to undermine our institutions.”

It was the second time in three months that the High Commissioner had written to the newspaper on the subject.

He previously responded to a May 28 editorial in Utusan on the Elected Presidency scheme, to point out several inaccuracies such as its claims that  “meritocracy was always being used as an excuse to discriminate against Malays” and “meritocracy was also open to manipulation”.

In his response to the earlier commentary which was published on the Singapore Foreign Ministry’s website, Mr Menon said: “Singapore’s meritocratic system has never been ‘manipulated’ or ‘used as an excuse to discriminate’ against Singapore’s Malay community, or any other community.”

In his letter to Utusan on Thursday, Mr Menon pointed out that the newspaper did not publish his response to the May 28 editorial “for reasons I could not understand other than not providing a true picture to the readers”.

“Instead, the Editor published a second commentary (on Monday), with similar inaccuracies and misrepresentations of Singapore’s Presidential Election and of the statements by Singapore’s political office holders,” he added.

  • Australian Senator Pauline Hanson Wears Burqa To Parliament In Bid To Ban Them

Australian Senator Pauline Hanson Wears Burqa To Parliament In Bid To Ban Them

Australian far-right senator Pauline Hanson wore a burqa to parliament on Thursday (Aug 17) as part of her campaign to ban the all-enveloping garment worn by some Muslim women, drawing a quick rebuke from the government and Muslims.

Hanson sat in her seat in the assembly for about 20 minutes covered by the black burqa before removing it to call for them to be banned in public for national security reasons.

“I’m quite happy to remove this because this is not what should belong in this parliament,” Hanson, who leads the far-right One Nation party, told the Senate.

“If a person who wears a balaclava or a helmet in to a bank or any other building, or even on the floor of the court, they must be removed. Why is it not the same case for someone who is covering up their face and cannot be identified?”

Hanson, who first rose to prominence in the 1990s because of her strident opposition to immigration from Asia and to asylum seekers, has in recent years campaigned against Islamic clothing and the building of mosques.

Her party has four senators, which gives it influence in parliament when closely contested legislation is being voted on.

    Attorney-General George Brandis rebuked Hanson.

“I am not going to pretend to ignore the stunt that you have tried to pull today by arriving in the chamber dressed in a burqa,” he said, drawing applause from members of the Senate.

“We all know that you are not adherent of the Islamic faith. I would caution and counsel you with respect to be very, very careful of the offence you may do to the religious sensibilities of other Australians.”

Adel Salman, vice president of the Islamic Council of Victoria state, said Hanson’s action was “a mockery of her position”.

“It is very disappointing, but not surprising as she has sought to mock the Islamic faith time and time again.”

  • Jawatankuasa Fatwa Muis Benarkan Bayi Muslim Terima Susu & Ibu Muslim Derma Susu

Jawatankuasa Fatwa Muis Benarkan Bayi Muslim Terima Susu & Ibu Muslim Derma Susu

  • Fair Or Unfair?: Some Public Officers In Civil Service Can Get Extra Day Off In Celebration Of NS50

Fair Or Unfair?: Some Public Officers In Civil Service Can Get Extra Day Off In Celebration Of NS50

Some public servants will be receiving an extra day off this year to mark 50 years of National Service (NS50) in the Republic.

The day off, which has to be taken between Aug 1 and Dec 31 this year, is meant for employees who have served as full-time National Servicemen or uniformed regulars in the Singapore Armed Forces and the Home Team, according to one statutory board.

Rumours of the extra day off for public servants first surfaced on online forum hardwarezone late last week, with users asking if it was true.

Checks by TODAY revealed that employees of some statutory boards have received an internal memo or email from their Human Resources department earlier this month.

But it seems the benefit may not be rolled out to all public officers as employees at some other ministries and statutory boards said they have yet to receive word of the extra day off.

In an internal memo seen by TODAY, the day off was declared by the staff member’s employer “in support of the Ministry of Defence’s NS50 initiatives”.

TODAY has written to the Ministry of Defence and the Public Service Division for more information.

This year, Singapore marks 50 years of National Service, and as part of the celebration, a year-long series of events and initiatives have been rolled out to commemorate the milestone.

Among the perks given to all past and present national servicemen this year are S$100 worth of NS50 vouchers, which they can use at a wide range of retail and food and beverage outlets. Those currently in service, or have completely their operationally ready NS are also given an additional one-year membership at either Safra or HomeTeamNS.
