Crowdfunding For Singaporean Calvin Huang Who Is Suffering A Stroke In Chiang Mai

For almost three months now, Mr Calvin Huang has been lying in Sriphat Medical Center in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The 59-year-old Singaporean humanitarian worker collapsed at his apartment’s lobby after suffering a stroke. He was spotted by a security guard and rushed to the hospital by ambulance, where he underwent emergency surgery. Mr Huang’s family members started a crowdfunding campaign on Give.asia on June 27 to fund his return to Singapore, and they are hoping to bring him home as early as next week. His older sister, Ms Yvonne Huang, 60, said they were informed of his condition only on April 19, a week later after his stroke. The son of Mr Huang’s landlord had sent a message to Mr Huang’s youngest brother, saying Mr Huang was in hospital and needed help.

He later based himself in Chiang Mai, where he worked with Burmese refugees and various hill tribes. To cover his personal expenses, Mr Huang ran a tour operator service, but he mainly involved himself in humanitarian work. He facilitated multiple efforts to bring overseas teams into Chiang Mai to provide medical care for the hill tribes, and he also brought in fleece blankets for the needy in preparation for winter. Ms Huang said her brother’s condition has been improving, and he regained semi-consciousness in May.

He has begun to partially open his eyes again, for short periods during the day. A self-funded missionary herself, Ms Huang decided to turn to Give.asia when she found out how much Mr Huang’s medical fees would be. She has raised nearly $12,000 but hopes to raise $100,000, which will fund his medical fees and repatriation. His stay in the hospital has already incurred fees exceeding $50,000, while his airlift is estimated to cost about $17,000. Donations may be made at www.give.asia/movement/bring_calvin_home_1

  • 7 Tips Untuk Organize Raya Open House

7 Tips Untuk Organize Raya Open House

Muslims Carried Out Just 12.4% Of Attacks In The US But Received 41.4% Of News Coverage

Terror attacks carried out by Muslims receive more than five times as much media coverage as those carried out by non-Muslims in the United States, according to an academic study. Analysis of coverage of all terrorist attacks in the US between 2011 and 2015 found there was a 449 per cent increase in media attention when the perpetrator was Muslim. Muslims committed just 12.4% of attacks during the period studied but received 41.4% of news coverage, the survey found. The authors said the finding suggests the media is making people disproportionately fearful of Muslim terrorists.

Scientists studied US newspaper coverage of every terrorist attack on American soil and counted up the total number of articles dedicated to each attack. They found that the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, which was carried out by two Muslim attackers and killed three people, received almost 20% of all coverage relating to US terror attacks in the five-year period. In contrast, reporting of a 2012 massacre at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin that left six people dead and was carried out by Wade Michael Page – a white man, constituted just 3.8% of coverage.

A mass shooting by Dylann Roof, who is also white, at an African-American church in Charleston, South Carolina, killed nine people but received only 7.4% of media coverage, while a 2014 attack by Frazier Glenn Miller on a Kansas synagogue left three dead but accounted for just 3.3% of reports. All of the above attacks are considered to meet widely-used definitions of terrorism, according to researchers at Georgia State University.

  • Body Of Singaporean Fighter Believed To Have Been Recovered In Marawi

Body Of Singaporean Fighter Believed To Have Been Recovered In Marawi

MANILA: The Philippine military has recovered what they believe to be the body of a Singaporean fighter in the besieged city of Marawi.

According to the Marawi joint task force on Tuesday (Jul 4), the Singaporean is believed to be among 11 suspected foreign fighters who have been killed so far as Philippine troops battle to regain control of militant-held areas of the city.

Fighters from Malaysian, Indonesia, Yemen and India were among the bodies recovered, said the joint task force, adding that it has not yet completed the identification process.

“A cadaver of a foreign-looking individual was also recovered by troops. It is believed that it is one of the reported foreign fighters from Singapore,” the military was quoted saying in local media reports.

Singapore’s Ministry of Home Affairs had in May confirmed that a Singaporean man has been implicated in terrorism-related activities in the southern Philippines, but said it has no information about whether he is involved in the armed insurgency in Marawi city on Mindanao island.

The southern region of Mindanao has been under martial law since May 23, after hundreds of gunmen waving black Islamic State flags occupied parts of Marawi city and triggered deadly clashes that have yet to end.

More than 400 people, including 337 militants and 85 members of the security forces, have been killed in the fighting in Marawi. Forty-four civilians have also been killed, either in crossfire or executed by the militants, the military said.
