Angry Netizens Deleting Meituan En Masse After Delivery App Introduces Separate Boxes For Halal Food

Popular food delivery app Meituan has stirred up controversy online after announcing that it will begin offering separate logistics infrastructure for halal food, causing Chinese netizens to condemn the company for “discriminating against” non-Muslims while also worrying about the “rise of Islam” in their country.

Meituan couriers on bikes will now be armed with two delivery boxes, a normal one for non-halal food and a smaller one for halal food, the company announced recently, a change that many netizens apparently see as discriminatory, vowing that they will delete the app en masse.

One Weibo thread on the controversial topic currently counts nearly 50,000 comments. “Meituan is really acting outside natural morality,” reads the top comment with more than 18,000 likes. Meanwhile, other Weibo users have more specifically charged the company with discriminating against Han people, wondering why separate delivery boxes are not also offered for them or for Buddhists or for people with other religious beliefs which affect their diet. “I don’t like to eat lamb, can I have my own separate delivery box as well?” asked another Weibo user.

“Meituan delivers both halal food and non-halal food. That really isn’t proper or harmonious. In order to safeguard the sanctity of minority food, we non-halal diners should start using Ele.me [another popular delivery app] instead. That way Muslims will have their own halal app,” argued another netizen, joining calls online to boycott Meituan and delete the company’s app.

Others have voiced their dissatisfaction with the policy change in different ways. For instance, Twitter user @kitmention points out one netizen who asked Meituan on Weibo to: “Please put my pork soup in your halal-only delivery box.”

Meanwhile, some netizens have wondered who exactly is discriminating against whom in this matter. In one popular post, a Weibo user asks “Have anyone’s rights been hurt?” by this logistics change, adding that if you believe that Muslims are really unfairly forcing you to accommodate to their religious beliefs, then are you not also committing the same sin by raising a fuss and calling for a boycott over this issue?

In response to this argument, another Weibo user has argued that, in fact, separate boxes mean increased delivery costs that will be borne by all customers, not just halal ones, so the change will have direct consequences on the app’s users. And, as for the negative societal effects of such a policy, the netizen worried about how continuing to cater to religious customs could lead to problems down the road, arguing that consumers should be free to vote with their wallets to support or not support Meituan’s new halal boxes.

More broadly, the controversy over halal delivery boxes appears to have reawakened ethnic fears among Chinese netizens against Muslims. A post by one female business owner on “rising Islamization,” which includes screenshots of a rather Islamophobic story, has gone viral on Weibo with nearly 40,000 shares. The comments below the post are filled with netizens condemning Islam and cautioning their Han brothers and (especially) sisters to be careful about the creeping influence of Islamic culture.

Founded in 2010 and headquartered in Beijing, Meituan started life as a group buying website that emerged in the wake of the Groupon craze. It merged with restaurant reviews app Dianping in 2015 to form Meituan-Dianping, which now claims to be the world’s largest on-demand delivery platform, receiving up to 10 million orders every day.

  • Commentary: Boycott Geylang Bazaar? Rising Rental And Non-Halal Food Are The Critical Reasons

Commentary: Boycott Geylang Bazaar? Rising Rental And Non-Halal Food Are The Critical Reasons

    Bazaar Ramadan…

    Part1
    Sewa gerai makan= $17000
    Sewa gerai jual pakaian= $7000
Tahun demi tahun, sewa gerai semakin tinggi. Tauke gerai buat bidding, kes tamak nak mampos. Tahun depan confirm naik lagi. Peniaga melayu semakin berkurangan kerana tak mampu bayar sewa yg tinggi. Dulu sewanya tak setinggi macam ni, dulu ramai peniaga melayu tapi kurang pembeli. Masa tu ramai yg cuma lalu lalang see see look look. Peniaga musiman jadi serik nak meniaga. Sekarang peniaga melayu semakin berkurangan, kita pula complain. Kesian pada peniaga melayu, tak berniaga kerana sewa yg mahal. Perit orang kita tak rasa. Adat berniaga ada pasang surut. Untuk elak dari benda ni berlaku, kalau orang Melayu bersatu hati, kita boikot bazaar geylang kasi tauke rugi. Kalau takde penyewa gerai, tauke gigit jari. Biar dia bayar hutang bank sendiri. Kita belanja aje kat Joo Chiat dan pasar Geylang. Kasi untung peniaga tetap yg dah bertapak bertahun2 kat situ. Takde bazaar takpe, Geylang tak ‘berseri’, tak best pun takpe. Yg penting kita ajar sama itu tauke. Abih macam mana peniaga melayu nak berniaga? Online kan ada. Peniaga gerai makanan boleh buat kat bawah blok, yg tu betul Bazaar Ramadan. 100% makanan halal.

    ———————————————————————————————

    Sambungan bazaar Geylang…
    Part 2
Semalam dah draft tapi hold dulu. Nak tembak kena save peluru.

    Menang bidding= $1.79m
    Paling murah 1 gerai= $7k
    900 gerai= $7k x 900= $6.3m
    Tauke untung= $6.3-1.79= $4.51m
Peniaga untung atau tak, tauke gerai tetap untung $4.51m, untung peniaga bergantung pada sales. Kalau rugi, peniaga tetap kena bayar sewa harga $7k dan lebih. So orang peniaga Melayu kena pandai, boikot besar besaran, kalau tauke menang bidding, tapi takde penyewa, dia tetap kena bayar duit bidding $1.79m. Kalau bazaar Geylang jual babi pun, biarkan aje sb menteri2 kita tak halang. Its ok sb itu bukan tempat Melayu/Islam lagi. Kalau dia hutang bank, itu pandai2 dia settle dgn bank. Kita jangan jadi barua pada tauke macam ni.

Singapore Bishop Issues Advisory On ‘Gay Moment’ In Beauty And The Beast

Romantic scenes involving two male characters in the live-action remake of the Disney classic Beauty and the Beast have prompted an advisory from the head of the Anglican church in Singapore, calling on parents to “provide guidance to their children” on the movie.

In a statement posted on the St Andrew’s Cathedral website on Sunday (12 March), Bishop Rennis Ponniah urged the faithful to be mindful of the “homosexual content” in the movie, which comes out during the March school holidays. Singapore’s censorship board has given the movie a PG (parental guidance) rating.

“In this new live-action remake of the classic film , the character LeFou is portrayed as gay and a ‘gay moment’ is included in the movie by way of a sub-plot,” noted the bishop.

“Parents are therefore strongly advised to provide guidance to their children about this re-make of Beauty & the Beast, and indeed to their children’s entertainment choices in a rapidly changing age.”

Ponniah added that the Anglican Diocese and the National Council of Churches are working on a fuller advisory in the coming week.

Beauty and the Beast has stirred controversy in the US, with conservative Christians calling for a boycott of the movie for its alleged pro-LGBT agenda.

  • Muslims Must Capitalise On Economic Leverage To Condemn Israeli Oppression Against Palestine

Muslims Must Capitalise On Economic Leverage To Condemn Israeli Oppression Against Palestine

From time to time, as a community, we tend to react when we feel There’s injustice done to certain groups of people we feel are oppressed.

These may include the Rohingyans, Palestinians, Syrians etc.

We do this by for E.g. Making Facebook postings on the issue. We share articles and memes portraying the injustices. We also start online petitions.

These help in creating awareness of the issue. And it is a positive thing that we at least show empathy for our fellow brethren in faith that’s going through severe hardship.

Beyond awareness there is little, methinks, by way of impact.

I think collectively we do have some leverage. Economic leverage. What we can do for e.g. Is to join the BDS movement worldwide. In a nutshell, the global movement encourages boycotting of Israeli goods by way of peaceful protest against the oppression of the Palestinian people.

Next time we shop, take a little time looking at the product barcode. Do not purchase items worth the barcodes beginning with 729 and 871.

No need for petitions or writing letters to embassies. These are generally ignored.

Let our wallets do the protesting. God willing it could lead to significant changes. BDS has scored some significant victories along the way.

    Let’s join the movement.

At least on Yaumul Qiyamah we can stand in front of Allah azzawajal and say ‘Oh Allah. I am very weak. I’m swimming in sin. I at least try to help
My Palestinian brothers in this small way. Please forgive me.’

Remember that Allah azzawajal is al Ghafoor and ar Raheem. May He look upon us with Mercy and may He accept our deeds n forgive us our shortcomings n transgressions.

    Wallahualam.

  • Malaysia Considers Boycott Of AFF Suzuki Cup Over Myanmar’s Violence On Rohingyas

Malaysia Considers Boycott Of AFF Suzuki Cup Over Myanmar’s Violence On Rohingyas

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 23 ― Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin confirmed he has lobbied for Malaysian football team to boycott this year’s Asean Football Federation’s (AFF) Suzuki Cup due to co-host Myanmar’s treatment of the Rohingya Muslim minority.

Khairy said he has brought up the issue in the Cabinet meeting last week, and will continue doing so in the same meeting this week.

“I raised this issue in Cabinet last week. Will do so again this week and stand guided by decision,” Khairy said on his Twitter account today.

Khairy’s remark came after Perlis mufti Datuk Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin became the latest to urge the boycott by the Harimau Malaysia team, four days after the regional tournament started on Saturday.

Malaysia won its first game against Cambodia 3-2 on Sunday, and currently leads Group B in the Cup that also includes Vietnam and host Myanmar.

Matches involving Group A are held in the Philippines instead, with the co-host facing Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia.

“What is the meaning of sports without humanity? More than that, it is an extreme cruelty against one of mankind’s ethnic group and they are Muslims.

“We really hope for the government’s strictness in this matter,” Asri said on his official Facebook page last night.

Asri said the boycott is needed to protest the purported cruelty and tyranny of the Myanmar government against the Rohingyas, including the murder of children, rape, burning them alive and other alleged crimes against humanity.

Violence has recently escalated in the Rakhine state, with Myanmar’s six-month-old government led by Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi blaming insurgency by Islamist militants for military attacks which has killed at least 26 people.

The 1.1 million Rohingya living in Rakhine state face discrimination, severe restrictions on their movements and access to services, especially since inter-communal violence in 2012 that displaced 125,000 people.

The Rohingya are not among the 135 ethnic groups officially recognised in Myanmar, where many in the Buddhist majority regard them as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh
