  • Heroic Republic Poly Staff Saves Family Before Engine Burst

Heroic Republic Poly Staff Saves Family Before Engine Burst

He was taking a break with his colleagues at about 3.30pm on Sunday (March 26) when he saw smoke coming out from the bonnet of a nearby car.

What horrified Mr Ramzie Ramzan, 38, an audio and visual technician with Republic Polytechnic (RP), was a couple with their young daughter, believed to be about six or seven years old, inside the car, which was on Woodlands Avenue 9.

“We ran towards the car, shouting for the family to get out in case the car caught fire or worse, exploded,” he told The New Paper.

Thanks to Mr Ramzie and his colleagues’ quick reactions, the family got out of the car just moments before the engine burst into flames.

By the time Mr Ramzie and his colleagues got to the car, the fire had grown to about the height of the car.

“We then rushed back to the RP control room to grab a few fire extinguishers because we needed to control the fire as it was a busy road.

“It was scary, definitely, but our main concern was ensuring nothing worse happened because it was a busy street with much traffic,” he said.

“It was just a basic instinct. As a father of three, I was just concerned for others and just a spontaneous reaction to help,” he said.

  • SCDF: Warning! We Do Not Endorse Any Fire-Extinguishers Or First Aid Kits, Don’t Fall For Scam

SCDF: Warning! We Do Not Endorse Any Fire-Extinguishers Or First Aid Kits, Don’t Fall For Scam

ALERT OF COMPANIES ATTEMPTING TO SELL FIRE EXTINGUISHERS AND FIRST AID KITS

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) has received public feedback about companies claiming to be endorsed by the SCDF to sell fire extinguishers and/ or first aid kits. In some cases, insistent ‘hard-sell’ techniques were used to get the public to purchase their products. Sales personnel were also reported to be wearing lanyards to give the impression that they were representatives from a government organisation.

We would like to inform members of the public that the SCDF is not involved in any sales of fire extinguishers and first aid kits. The SCDF has also not authorised any company to conduct such activities on its behalf. The SCDF would like to remind members of the public to exercise caution when dealing with such persons or companies.

It is a standard procedure for SCDF personnel on official duties to display their warrant card, NS Identity Card or letter of authorisation, as proof of authentication. SCDF personnel will not compel residents to purchase fire extinguishers and first aid kits for their households. While it is encouraged for each household to be equipped with a fire extinguisher and first aid kit, it is not mandatory and residents will not be fined by SCDF for not having these items at home.

Members of the public are advised to lodge a police report for cases involving the impersonation of SCDF officers or unauthorised business activities.

Individuals who wish to file a complaint against such companies can call CASE’s hotline 6100-0315 for assistance. They can also file an online complaint via CASE’s website at https://www.case.org.sg/complaint.aspx or walk in to CASE’s office located at 170 Ghim Moh Road.

  • SCDF Firefighter Injured During CK Building Operations Discharged From Hospital, Recovering

SCDF Firefighter Injured During CK Building Operations Discharged From Hospital, Recovering

A firefighter from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) lost consciousness while fighting a conflagaration at the CK Building on Wednesday (Aug 17).

He has since been discharged from hospital and is recuperating at home.

Sergeant Muhammad Hidir, a section commander and full-time national serviceman (NSF), was among the first firefighting teams to rush to Tampines Street 92 where a blaze had engulfed the industrial building.

Sgt Hidir and his team entered the building cautiously wearing breathing apparatus, said SCDF.

They went up to the fourth floor, where the fire was raging, to fight it.

But there were “highly combustible” products there, and the entire floor was “alight with flames rapidly raging out of control”, SCDF said in a Facebook post on Thursday.

“The fire had also engulfed the floor above and was spreading to the sixth floor. There were also multiple explosions from ‘flying’ aerosol cans,” said SCDF.

Mr Hidir and his team retreated as the situation became life threatening.

While retreating from the inferno, he was overcome by heat exhaustion and soon lost consciousness.

Mr Hidir was attended to by fellow firefighters and paramedics and rushed to Changi General Hospital.

He has been discharged from hospital and is on medical leave, said SCDF.

“Thank you for your thoughts and prayers. I’m doing just fine right now. Really never expected the overwhelming show of concern online…and a big thank you to my buddies for always looking out for one another in the heat of action,” said Mr Hidir.

The fire at CK Building burned for hours, but no member of public was injured.

The blaze began at about 1.30pm on Wednesday, and was extinguished at 6am on Thursday – more than 15 hours later.

Highly flammable paper products and household aerosol cans fed the fire.

The building has been damaged structurally, and will be closed for reconstruction work, said the Building and Construction Authority on Thursday.

  • SCDF Team Who Attended To Heng Swee Keat A Credit To SCDF

SCDF Team Who Attended To Heng Swee Keat A Credit To SCDF

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) team that responded to the emergency call at the Istana for Mr Heng Swee Keat on Thursday have been praised by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

In a letter to SCDF Commissioner Eric Yap, Mr Lee thanked Paramedic SSG Janice Lee Yi Ping, EMT SSG Mohd Imran bin Abd Samad, NSF EMT CPL Ian Lok Yu Hern and Paramedic Trainee Sheena Chiang Yanpin.

“They were highly professional and did an excellent job,” wrote Mr Lee.

“My colleagues and I observed how your team kept your cool and were in control throughout the incident, working as a team with Dr Janil.”

Mr Lee wrote that the team responded within seven minutes of a call being placed to 995 after Mr Heng collapsed during a Cabinet meeting.

When the team arrived, Dr Janil Puthucheary was already resuscitating Mr Heng using a bag and mask resuscitation kit.

Dr Janil is an MP for Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC and Minister of State for Education and Communications and Information

At one point, paramedic Ms Lee asked Dr Janil if he was bagging the patient too fast. Dr Janil responded that he was hyper-ventilating the patient to relieve pressure on the brain and reduce swelling.

The team supported Dr Janil, then later took the lead and transferred Mr Heng into an ambulance to be taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

Mr Heng, 54, suffered a stroke due to an aneurysm on Thursday. He underwent surgery and is in stable condition at the ICU.

Mr Lee wrote of the SCDF team: “Each knew their roles, and all had the presence of mind to stay completely focused on the patient.

“It is never easy to attend to a resuscitation, and the active involvement of a clinician already on scene can make it more difficult.

“Your team was highly competent and professional, unfazed by their surroundings or the presence of ministers.

“They asserted themselves where necessary and played an important role in stabilising the patient.”

He added: “Your officers are a credit to the SCDF. They reflected the professionalism and sense of mission that they display daily as they go about their duties to protect and save lives and property for a safe and secure Singapore.”
