  • How Many Parents Of Uni-Graduate Daughters Will Let Their Daughters Marry Men Of Lower Academic Qualifications?

How Many Parents Of Uni-Graduate Daughters Will Let Their Daughters Marry Men Of Lower Academic Qualifications?

On the contrary, many of my local graduate female friends got married to diploma holders and ITE graduates. Education, sometimes, are not defined by the papers they hold.

My question is… How many mothers would actually allow it happen to their sons? Especially if the lady is divorced and not just older. And their sons are earning less/minimal. Opps!

The pursuit of knowledge is a divine commandment in Islam.

  • Video: Northbrooks Secondary Teacher Used Vulgarity In Class

Video: Northbrooks Secondary Teacher Used Vulgarity In Class

The video of a Northbrooks secondary school teacher using the words cheebye or cibai when she disciplined her student has gone viral in Singapore. The teacher lost control of the situation and was raising her voice back at the rude student, eventually resorting to vulgarities to talk down the student.

While the student may be the first to use the vulgarity on the teacher, the teacher should not have used the vulgarity cibai back on the student. When she did so, the rest of the class were visibly amused and laughing out loud to see their teacher lose control and use vulgar language back to the student. They took a snapchat video of the whole incident and posted it online.

According to the video source, it was claimed that the school had told the girl who was scolded to request the video-taker to not post the video online to avoid drawing attention to the unsavoury incident.

The Ministry of Education has yet to comment on this latest incident.

  • SDP: MOE Must Downsize Class Sizes To Encourage Creativity

SDP: MOE Must Downsize Class Sizes To Encourage Creativity

The latest IMD report shows Singapore falling in ‘talent’ ranking. This is partly due to “inadequate investment and development of its own talents” (compared to being tops for attracting foreign talent) – a serious indictment of the PAP’s priorities.

    http://www.businesstimes.com.sg/…/singapore-losing-edge-in-…

The report also cites the poor pupil-teacher ratio, ranking 41st for primary education and 35th for secondary education. This why the SDP proposes that our pupil-teacher ratio be halved to 20-1.

    The Problem

Our education system puts too much emphasis on exams and rote learning which kill creative impulses in our children. Also, these statistics paint a depressing picture of what the education system is doing to our children:

    • 20% of our children exhibit signs of anxiety and mood disorders. (The Straits Times, 2012)
    • One in three students say they sometimes think that life is not worth living because they fear exams. “That’s scary. What kind of life are we putting our kids through if they’re so frightened of examinations?” a psychiatrist said. (Far Eastern Economic Review, 2001). Children actually commit suicide because of the pressure they feel to perform.
    • The number of youths seeking psychiatric help increased by 16% from 2005, reaching 3,126 in 2010. More than half of these were primary school children. (The Sunday Times, 2010)
    • The number of children warded for “aggressive, suicidal or hallucination tendencies” at IMH jumped by 35% between 2005 to 2010. Mental health professionals attribute these problems to academic stress. (The Sunday Times, 2010)
    • Psychiatrists found that 12.5% of primary school children show signs of emotional problems including anxiety and depression. Researchers say that this might be an underestimation of the prevalence of mental health problems among children. (Singapore Medical Journal, 2007)

    1. Remove PSLE and delay streaming

The stress of exams inflicts psychological trauma on children. It is not an intelligent approach to assess the abilities of primary-school students on a single examination.

    2. Cultivate creative minds

Build confidence in children by helping them develop independent thinking, willingness to make mistakes, and perseverance in the face of failed attempts.

    3. Broaden curricula, reduce syllabi

Subjects such as music appreciation, speech and drama, literature, etc. as well as periods for students to collaborate and interact to develop their creativity will be introduced to al schools.

    4. Reduce class size

The SDP will reduce class size in our schools to 20 pupils per class from the current 40 to provide students with the necessary individual attention to help them develop academically.

    5. Introduce dedicated-teacher system

One teacher will be assigned to each class from Primary 1 and follow them through Primary 3; another will take them through from Primary 4 to 6. This will allow students to bond with their teachers and give parents and teachers time to develop trust and cooperation.

    6. Scrap school and class rankings

Comparing examination results and ranking students and classes detracts from the real purpose of education, which is self-improvement and self-actualisation.

    7. Encourage reading

Reducing the current syllabus will free up students and allow them time to read for pleasure. A love of reading encourages life-long learning and cultivates a creative mind.

    8. Convert all schools to single-session ones

School hours will be from 8 am to 4 pm during which time will be put aside for students to complete their assignments. This will allow teachers to help students with their work thereby ruling out the need for private tuition.

  • “Educated” Man Mocks Hawker’s Low Education, Threatens To Fake Report To NEA, In Front Of Own Children

“Educated” Man Mocks Hawker’s Low Education, Threatens To Fake Report To NEA, In Front Of Own Children

Dear family, friends and teachers. How many of you feel that our society is getting colder and colder? I used to think that it wasn’t until today. Today when I was helping my parents to tend their business around 1930 hrs, this guy’s daughter took my parent’s stall utensils without seeking for permission and of course without purchases any food from us. Naturally my mother told the girl to return the utensils after returning, the girl cried and guess what did the guy said to her? “It’s alright, I will cause trouble for this stall and tell NEA there were cockroaches in the stall”

I can’t believe this! A father of 2 children actually taught his daughter that this is the right thing to do.

Of course my father wasn’t happy and he yelled at him as to us we did not even have roaches in our stall. He then took a picture of my parent’s stall then said he will definitely report us. My father instructed me to do the same thing and thus the pictures. Another thing was that, he said it was fine if we report him as he isn’t doing business like us. To me so what if he actually had more education compared to my parents? Does he thinks that my parent’s can’t understand english? and lastly just because my parents are fighting under the heat to support a family whereas he is working in a air-condition environment? Is he looking down on hawker workers? I would wish to express my thoughts to this “xia suay” man.

My answer: I know you are more educated but who are you to insult people who work in hawker center? They earn money decently. I am speaking up on behalf of all hawker workers and not only my parents. Just because you might earn more money then them just because you are more educated, you still have no rights to insult them. Where have your education gone to? You think you are the only one who can speak english is it? and if you think that you are rich why get your food at hawker center? Why don’t you want to dine in in some restaurant? You know what? Because people like you, this society is getting way colder and I am really ashamed for you because of the way you teach your child. I am really disgusted.

My dear family, teachers and friends do share about this as I really hate it when people look down on hawker workers and people who is as “xia suay” as him.

  • Spoiled Girl Mistakes Malay Lady At Library For Indon Maid

Spoiled Girl Mistakes Malay Lady At Library For Indon Maid

Netizen Faizah Zakaria shared a bad experience she had at the library when a spoiled child treated her as if she was a maid just because of her skin colour. This is not the way for a child to behave towards our Malay Singaporean brothers and sisters.. The parents should educate the child not to treat others like slaves. Let’s share her story and condemn discrimination.

“I was sitting in the children’s section of the library reading a book to my (Chinese-looking) nephew when a little Chinese girl interrupted us. “Excuse me,” she said imperiously. I looked up. “Here,” she said pushing a plastic wrapping into my hands. Then she walked off without another word to join her mother who was texting busily a few steps away.

I was quite stunned to realize that she expected me to throw away her rubbish for her. Okay, maybe she had not meant to be offensive and thought I look like an Indonesian maid or something. Still, when is it ever acceptable to zero in on the only brown-skinned person in the library (excluding the officers) and expect her to take care of the trash? Even if I were a maid, that doesn’t give some random kid a right to do so, especially when the rubbish bin is a only a few steps away. It is not okay to expect strangers to pick up after you whether they are Chinese, Malay, Indonesian, Filipino, Indian or Martian.

Have a happy racial harmony day tomorrow, Singapore. We have some way to go.”
